DESIG N IN DEP TH 2015 SER IES:
Cultural Landscapes:
Shaping the Story of Seattle
The “story” of a city can be taken as
the product of continuous change and
a convergence of seemingly disparate
sources. In tracing the story of Seattle,
the 2015 Design in Depth lecture series
aims to explore Seattle from several
vantage points – its Architecture,
Literature, Music, Art, Film and
Culinary Arts, offering new insight into
all the elements that make our city
unique. Each event features speakers
and professionals from various fields
and offers an investigation of the ways
in which architecture, culture and the
natural environment contribute to an
understanding of Seattle’s story.

Icons of the Future
When thinking of the Chrysler Building, the Golden Gate Bridge or Eiffel Tower, we are
immediately transported to the cities they have grown to symbolize. In Seattle, the
Space Needle is an emblem of our city and of the Pacific Northwest, appearing as a
visual reference in film and material culture. These buildings all encapsulate important
information about the time in which they were created, expressing how a city saw itself
and the values they wished to embody. Speakers will discuss historical icons and talk about
what new icons will make their mark on Seattle.
Panelists
ALLYN STELLMACHER
With over 30 years of experience, Allyn is design partner
for ZGF’s Seattle office taking a leadership role in guiding
the design of all projects. Since joining the firm in 1989, he
has been involved in a wide variety of projects, both in
the public and private sectors, many of which have been
complex and multi-phased, and have required working
closely with user groups throughout design to build
consensus amongst stakeholder groups. His responsibilities
on projects have involved site analysis, master planning, programming, conceptual
design development, technical and design coordination and documentation, and
design team management. Allyn’s ability to listen and quickly synthesize multiple
project requirements enables him to head our design team in the development of
schemes that quickly demonstrate the opportunities of program and site. Allyn’s
project involvement has demonstrated his sensitivity to the use and detailing of
appropriate sustainable materials, building systems, and technologies to optimize
design quality within established budgets, and to meet or exceed sustainability goals.
