Elders / Respected Persons allowance
From 13 April 2016 Elders and Respected Persons who attend Murri Court are entitled to be
paid an allowance of $100 per sitting day. This payment is made to recognise the valuable
contribution Elders and Respected Persons make to Murri Court by covering their expenses.
DJAG will pay for up to two Elders and Respected Persons to sit with the magistrate at each
Murri Court sitting.
DJAG will pay Elder and Respected Persons allowances by direct deposit into their bank
account.
Centrelink Benefits
The payment of allowances for Murri Court sittings may impact on Centrelink entitlements
of Elders and Respected Persons who receive Centrelink benefits.
It is recommended that individuals who receive Centrelink benefits contact Centrelink on
1800 136 380 to find out more information about any potential impact on their benefits.
Tax
The payment of allowances for Murri Court sittings may have tax implications.
Individuals should contact the Australian Taxation Office on 13 28 61 to find out more
information about Murri Court Elder/Respected Person allowances and how they may
impact on them.
Payments of Elder / Respected Person Allowance
The CJG must provide the following documentation for each Elder or Respected Person who
sits on Murri Court before payments can be made directly to the Elder or Respected Person:
1. Murri Court Elder / Respected Person Bank Account Details Form
2. Statement by a Supplier Form (unless the Elder or Respected Person has an ABN – in
which case the ABN must be provided).
These forms are attached and should be completed and emailed to:
[email protected]. These forms only need to be completed once unless any of
the details change.
On each Murri Court sitting day a Community Justice Group Attendance and Submission
Details Form (attached) must be completed by the CJG and endorsed by court staff. Court
staff will email a copy of this form to [email protected] for
processing.
Funds will be deposited directly into the Elder or Respected Person’s bank account. Up to
two Elders can sit with the Murri Court on each sitting day. DJAG pays each Elder $100 for
every Murri Court sitting. If an Elder does not wish to receive the full $100, they need to
complete the Murri Court Elder Allowance Variation Form (attached) and email it to:
