Museum Academy Summer 2014 Master Artist Workshop The Dogwood Tree – Realistic Watercolor Landscapes with Alan P. Shuptrine August 22 – 23, 2014 Supply List Paper: You will need two (2) full sheets of 140 or heavier cold press watercolor paper (22 X 30 inches). We will be working with quarter-sheets (11 X 15 inches), so if you want to pre-tear yours, that is fine. Some of you will prefer to staple or mount your watercolor sheet to a board, or to ½” Gatorfoam. Others will want to bring a watercolor pad. My personal preference is to leave the paper loose so I can spin it on my easel. Brushes: Watercolor brushes are expensive, especially when buying Kolinsky sable! You do not need to buy the finest, most expensive brushes to take my class--or to be a successful artist for that matter. I used school brushes I found in the dumpster for years! However, the dry brush technique I teach and utilize in my paintings cannot be executed with a nylon or Taklon type of water media brush. The next best alternative to Kolinsky sable is “red sable” or “sabeline” or synthetic sable. The hairs should be springy, even when wet, and the rounds should snap to a sharp point. You will need a #6 round brush, #8 round brush, 2" hake brush, 1 1/2" fan brush (soft natural hair), a rigger or finely pointed detail brush, two cheap nylon rounds for applying mask--#4 and #10, and a cheap nylon fan brush (which we will mutilate with a razor blade and make into a grass brush). If there are other brushes in your comfort zone, please bring those too! Watercolor Pigments: Ultramarine Blue Cobalt Blue Burnt Sienna Permanent Alizarin Crimson Yellow Ochre Aureolin Hooker's Green Sepia Mask: Small bottle--I use Incredible White brand or Winsor and Newton (Clear). I recommend staying away from pigmented masks, as they can actually stain a watercolor. You will also need a mask remover too (looks like a 2 X 2 X 3/8 inch square of crepe, usually sold in art stores near the mask).
