Vocabulary Activity 2: Word Mapping Aim To develop your child’s vocabulary by representing related words in a word map. Suitable for all ages Estimated time needed 20 minutes Materials needed 5 vocabulary words (e.g. chosen from books read with your child) Paper, pencils and coloured pencils Instructions 1. 2. 3. Pick a word and read it aloud. Write the word in the middle of a piece of paper. Get your child to think of related words and create a map to visually display these words. For instance, your child can be asked to think of: a. Words that belong to the same category (e.g. walk, jog, sprint) b. Words in different parts of speech (e.g. happy, happier, happily) c. Words related to features or themes (e.g. words related to an outing to the beach) Make it more interesting by using online materials (e.g. online thesaurus) and getting your child to draw.
