The initial plan was presented by artist David Deming, who proposed a 13ft-tall stainless steel statue of the comic book character mounted on a 36-ft-high pylon. He also planned to have a collection of large-scale crystals purportedly from Kryptonite – the rocks from the Man of Steel’s home planet – on the plaza surrounding the statue. “This is going to be an awesome addition,” said commission member Lawrence Lumpkin, according to the local Plain Dealer. Some commission members raised concerns about the risks surrounding the statue, which would have sharp geometric edges and a high base. Others said they thought the support pylon too large, and that it would overshadow the statue. Deming agreed to address the concerns and alter his plan. He already made changes to his design earlier this year, tiling the comic-book hero’s cape “to visually identify this as Superman, but also not to load up with ice and snow falling off it”. “I twisted the torso more so the ‘S’ [on Superman’s chest] would be more prominent,” he said, according to the Plain Dealer. The city has laid claim to the fictional character and decided to honor him because he was conceived by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, who met as students at the city’s Glenville high school in 1933. The plaza will also host sculptures of the creators and Shuster’s wife, Joanne, who was the original model for Lois Lane, Superman’s love interest, according to the Plain Dealer. The monument, which will cost approximately $3m, will be funded by a private, nonprofit group. Construction of the statue will begin after the completion of a $33m pedestrian bridge, scheduled to be finished in 2017, connecting the northern end of the downtown mall to attractions at the North Coast Harbor. This tribute, while unique, is not the first of its kind. Many cities have erected statues in honor of fictional characters. A two-ton, 10-foot statue of Rocky Balboa, the hero boxer of the eponymous film series, has stood by the Philadelphia Art Museum for more than two decades; Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit, Mad Hatter and Alice have met atop a Wonderland toadstool in New York’s Central Park for more than 50 years; and London and Moscow have respectively honored Sherlock Holmes and the devil’s assistants at locations from famous literary works. 2 SOURCE : http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/nov/30/cleveland-ohio-superman-3-million-statue-steel INNOVATIONS WITH STAINLESS STEEL CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY UNVEILS $500K STAINLESS STEEL SCULPTURE BY RENOWNED NEW YORK ARTIST GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Cornerstone University unveiled a large, stainless steel sculpture, on 2nd December,2015, Wednesday by renowned artist Albert Paley, the latest addition to the university's new $14 million Christ Chapel. The sculpture, which is mounted to a wall, depicts the "transformational claims of Jesus," and contains biblical symbols such as the Star of Bethlehem, the Good Shepherd and the cross. Titled "Let There Be Light," the sculpture is 12-feet tall and 25-feet wide and is made up of 37 individual pieces, each weighing between 100 and 400 pounds. "The sculpture symbolically deals with the iconography and the metaphor related to the life of Christ and the journey it has taken," said Paley, who created the sculpture at his studio in Rochester, New York. The sculpture cost just under $500,000 to create, ship to Michigan and install at the university, said Cornerstone President Joseph Stowell. The expense was funded by donors. Stowell said the sculpture brings to campus and the community "very important reminders of the work that Christ has done for us." "I think it's so easy to forget," he said, "and get caught up in everything going on around us. To be able to stop and pause and look at this and to see the sense that he is the light of our lives." Paley, who holds an endowed chair at the Rochester Institute of Technology and whose sculptures can be seen at major museums in the U.S. and abroad, said the sculpture took him and his team of skilled welders, finishers and painters about a year to complete. Each piece was packaged and shipped individually and, according to the university, was mounted on 83 studs anchored in the chapel's north wall. The sculpture's title was inspired by the bible passage John 8:12, which states, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life." Paley said it's up to each viewer to draw meaning from the sculpture. Cahill’s work explores the fragile and impermeable through the juxtaposition of dissimilar materials in her work, such as steel and silk, making it clear that strength should not be judged by perception alone. Her new work, which will début at SPECTRUM Miami, is a concise collection of sculptural embroidery with a bold contemporary edge. With Sphere 30, Cahill employs embroidery with vivid sculptural effects -- rich blue, greens and silvers permeate delicate silk suspended within a dissected sphere of stainless steel. Suspended over a highly polished base of stainless steel, the sphere appears to glow from within. The center rings of Sphere 30 (48" W X 80" L X 45" H) are some of the largest embroidered areas to ever have been produced. 4 Sphere 12, 13" D X 21" L X 15" H See no Evil, 6’ W X 5’ H, A dissected metal sphere of stainless steel, sliced through to reveal delicate silk Embroidery on Silk in a Folding Frame of Maple and Aluminum SOURCE : http://www.artfixdaily.com/artwire/release/2386-silk-and-steel-sculptures-and-other-works-by-blair-martin-cahill- INNOVATIONS WITH STAINLESS STEEL WEBNET STAINLESS STEEL MESH PROVIDES AESTHETICS AND SAFETY BETWEEN ATRIUM LEVELS AT MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY Architects working on the new University of Melbourne's School of Design building specified Webnet stainless steel mesh from Tensile for the five-storey atrium for aesthetic as well as functional reasons. Designed by local architects John Wardle Architects (JWA) in collaboration with Boston-based firm NADAAA, the building houses the University's faculty of architecture, building and planning. The design intent was to create a place of learning as well as a teaching tool. The materials used in the design have been left raw and exposed, allowing students an insight into construction techniques and fabrication. The architects chose Webnet mesh for its simplicity and an almost ethereal veil-like appearance. Aesthetics apart, the mesh also provides a safety barrier between levels, while still maintaining transparency, sightlines and air flow. Over 1200m² of stainless steel mesh stretch the entire height and span of the five-storey atrium of the new University of Melbourne's School of Design. Tensile was involved in the project right from the design stage through to construction, and considers the project as its most complicated installation till date. Tensile used 3D modelling to get all the components correct, especially for the 750 individual and unique pieces of tubing. The mesh and perimeter fixing details made it very easy to work with the complex geometry of the hanging studio and the atrium slab profiles. Tensile supplied 1200m² of stainless steel mesh, over 4 kilometres of support cables and 1500 metres of stainless steel tube, along with countless fittings, fixings and custom components for the complex project. Tensile was engaged by the architects for its ability to innovate and collaborate; the company was in constant consultation and discussion throughout the project with both JWA and NADAAA architects for design resolution and refinement. Tensile's solution for the School of Design atrium can be adapted for all sizes of commercial and institutional projects. The mesh offers a discreet, protective and supportive structure while providing an elegant spatial design element. Being a highly flexible solution, it can be used to form a plane surface and also be tensioned into three-dimensional forms featuring funnel-type, cylindrical, or spherical shapes. The work, called "Looking Up," features a steely figure with elongated limbs and its head tilted upward, meant to evoke the complex relationship New Yorkers have with the world above them, said Lauren Wittels who represents the artist Tom Friedman at Chelsea's Luhring Augustine Gallery. “Since 9/11, the idea of looking up in New York is fraught with anxiety,” Wittels said. “But this sculpture is also charming, awkward, loveable and hopeful.” The stainless steel structure will stand in the median of Park Avenue between 53rd and 54th streets from February to June. Friedman is known for making intricate, geometric sculptures from everyday household materials like toothpicks and sugar cubes, but has also been working with more durable, long-lasting materials for this project, Wittels said. The foundation of "Looking Up" was created using a 3D-printer and then Friedman and his crew texturized the form by pressing frying pans and other household items into the foam material before casting it in stainless steel. A duplicate of the sculpture currently stands at The Contemporary Austin, in Texas, but the Park Avenue installation will benefit from greater exposure and the ambient light from surrounding buildings and street lights, Wittels said. Friedman and the gallery have been planning the installation for more than a year, navigating among several city agencies to get the sculpture into place, according to Wittels. But wrangling with the city was worth it to bring the installation into the lives of the busy denizens of Midtown, she said. “It’s almost like a ruin from another time,” she said. “It feels semi-primitive, and it will provide viewers a respite for contemplation.” 6 SOURCE : http://www.artfixdaily.com/artwire/release/2386-silk-and-steel-sculptures-and-other-works-by-blair-martin-cahill- JINDAL STAINLESS NEWS BUSINESS REORGANISATION On 1st November 2015, JSL entered a new phase wherein it had undertaken and implemented a corporate restructuring plan in accordance with applicable laws of the country. Followed by 19th century's avant-garde movement that evoked exploration of new artistic methods, or experimenting with new techniques, in order to produce better art pieces; innovation and creativity has got a new status-quo in 'visual art'. The Italian Renaissance was probably the single most avantgarde epoch in the history of painting and sculpture. Figures from the Biblical Holy Family were represented in an entirely natural manner - a radical departure from Byzantine, even Gothic, artworks. Thus the wave in search of something new touched the core of all the modern artists and brought forth new forms of contemporary art. The 'art-full' tour of Gandhinagar echoed the influence of post-modern aeon in the form of assemblage art, pop art and kinetic art. As I began pacing the porch, the glittering radiance directly hit my glances, forming an enchanting world of shadows and lights. What can that be?? I questioned myself and found myself obstructing the sunlight and suddenly recalling what we have learnt in our grade 6th physics lesson; 'reflection'. Much to my surprise I found many sculptures glistening in the sun rays like a mirror, adorning the whole passage. So, when you turn your head to see the other corner, it looks like glinting threads of gold and silver stretched across the path, and gleaming against the distant wall, detaching one stratum of the atmosphere from another. What a display of art; I murmured!! On close observation, the enthralling world of 'lights, reflections and glitter' turned out to be the game of lustrous metal, stainless steel. 12 COVER STORY Unisphere STAINLESS STEEL; REDEFINING ART Stainless steel is not a recent addition to the world of architecture and sculptures and has been playing an important role in the durability of the final finish. Outdoor sculptures have to withstand climatic and pollution blows thus methods like chemical and electro chemical treatments have been much popular off late. Many indoor and outdoor sculptures have been given a Mirror finish surface through electro polishing and the same can be applied to even the most complex and intricate shapes and forms. Qualities like great resistance to corrosion and ease of clean ability has bought stainless steel to the fore in recent years. No matter how novel this metal appears to my eyes, artists and architects have identified its qualities in early 60’s. In 1963, a 12-story high, spherical stainless steel sculpture representing ‘Earth’ was conceived in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in the borough of Queens, New York City. One of borough's most enduring symbols, the sculpture was named Unisphere. The USS engineers studied different surface textures to determine which would look best at various viewing distances. After testing a variety of materials, non-directional textured stainless steel sheeting was chosen because of its weatherproof qualities and resistance to corrosion. To show elevation, the sheeting was built up in contours. The flashing iconic structure, Unisphere, carries a much larger meaning though. It demonstrates global interdependence and is dedicated to man’s achievements through a shrinking globe in an expanding universe. What thrills me even more than stainless steel being acknowledged as one of the elements of expressions quite early in the history of art and architecture is the fact that how beautifully this metal can transform ideas and concepts into a striking visual structure. 13 COVER STORY 'Steel Wonderland' by S. Ayesha STAINLESS STEEL; REDEFINING ART A Delhi based artist, S. Ayesha, has beautifully narrated her expedition as a stainless artist; “My maiden journey with stainless steel has ended in 'Steel Wonderland'. ... My discovery of traditional double-edged safety razor blade marked the beginning of my adventure with steel. Then, molecular structures, chemical compositions, perfect reflections, minor imperfections and visual distortions became my definition of stainless steel … and a bit like life. Since, I have obsessed about creating collages of colourful worlds with a material that is essentially one colour. 'Reflections' has been my second obsession. Playing with diversity – steel, light, plastic, paint and paper – to mirror reality with reflections of you within my collage has been exciting. Instead of covering the canvas, I have had to uncover the steel and its mirror effect. I have had to work in reverse. “ Ayesha's art pieces speak nothing less than her words. Vivek Vilasini, a Bangalore based sculpturist, grasps a very different thread to weave his experience with stainless steel. “My work revolves around occasions conceptually, be they socio-political issues, objects or installations. Because of the mirror effect on the stainless steel, a kind of a distance between the object and the person is created based on the kind of light it catches and the finish it gets.” Vivek's sculptures radiate the same light to connect with his audience as one interprets many colours of it. Artists and art lovers can distinguish many shades of Stainless Steel. For some it can be a challenging metal to mould and play with and for others it can just form into a marvel and quench their creative thirst. While some artists are still busy exploring what all stainless steel can offer, others have stated 'what not it can proffer'!! One such stainless artist is Subodh Gupta. He is mostly known for working with the ubiquitous stainless steel utensils to create sculptures that contemplate on the anxieties of contemporary India. His work exemplifies the iconography of a banal, precarious, edgy and bustling everyday life humungous in magnitude, blown out of proportions, peeled out of their ordinary skins by their sheer mass and volume. In stainless steel, Gupta settled upon a material that evoked a common set of associations across the country. His narratives address the complex dynamics between the socio-economic transformations of his country with the spatial theatre of his own sculptures. “I use materials that are connected with collective memory. I remember when I was in school; stainless steel was so desirable that to eat on it at an uncle's house was the height of luxury. It was more expensive than brass at that time” he explains and further asserts, “I enjoy the immense potential that stainless steel has. It is shiny and yet it is hollow, stripped of its utility. It's the duality that attracts me.” 14 COVER STORY One of his works, ‘When Soak Becomes Spill’, features everyday objects spilling from the brim of the huge bucket. Such utensils are used by millions of Indian families to eat their meals, and were part of the artist's childhood and local surroundings. Gupta's work often reflects Indian heritage whilst exploring universal themes such as consumerism, the environment and the common man. In, ‘When Soak Becomes Spill’, the pots and pans flow like water from the bucket, alluding to the importance of the world's natural resources and their wastage by contemporary society. The bright and shiny utensils appear covetable, representing the temptation of new commodities and growth of consumer society. As these stainless steel pots are empty they also suggest the poverty of that society. Though, one can unravel layer after layer analyzing what artist wants to depict in the modern art; Gupta's side of story has a different connotation all together. “I have explored the notions of migration and flux, those of arrival and departure, the elements of a common man's dreams, how he yearns for a Midas touch…The everyday speaks to me in intimate ways,” The journey from Gandhinagar to Delhi unlocked my conscience towards the enchanting world of metals. I read it somewhere or rather heard many of my folks saying, 'that everything that shines is not gold'!! Comparing the two, stainless steel and gold, I would rather rephrase the Idiom. However, I feel 'stainless', both literally and metaphorically, has a much greater gravity.
