Converting English system to the Metric system Course: Survey of Math Structures II & Introduction to Physical Science Instructor: Mr. Joe Timpe & Mrs. Dianne Phillips Team Member: Elaheh Badiei , Tori Mansell , Cindy Castillo Introduction The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the metric system to determine what the difference between metric system and US. Standard measurement How to convert from one system to another system Project Overview Upon completion of the lesson , students should be able to: To convert from one system to other system 1. 2. 3. Length Weight Volume Project Objectives or Goal A – Community In this project our team helped fifth grader in John Tyson Elementary to learn about Metric system. B - Community contact Mrs. Cathy Crouch Fifth grade gifted and talented facilitator Project Objectives or Goal B – Curriculum: The use of understanding operations; add, subtract, multiply, divide with fractions and decimals Use of Curriculum Relevant to Everyday Life The use of strategies to estimate measurement within a given unit to find whole numbers Use of manipulatives to model learning objectives Project Objectives or Goal C – Technology: Microsoft Office Word/PowerPoint/Excel Camera to take pictures Scale Project Objectives or Goal D – Skills develop as a team and as individual: As a team we learned how to distribute the work and make a better decision for this project: E-mail and telephone use for communication Organization, regular weekly meetings Methodology Elaheh- communicate with Mrs. Crouch and get the appointment. Create the power point. Made growth chart and Provided Camera for Pictures. Tori – Write some pages of power point and took the pictures. Borrowed supplies from NWACC Plastic Cylinders, Small Dice, Cylinders, and String. Provided Camera for Pictures. Cindy – Complete the power point and did the final touch. Provided weight scale for classroom. And Provided Camera for pictures. Project Results Gained teaching skills: How to manage a class How to organize a lesson Create a lesson plan How to work as a team Team Lesson Plan Subject/Content: Mathematics, Physical Science, Metric Conversion Standard/Process: Critical and Creative Thinking Product/Activity: 1. Introduce Concept of Metric Height, Weight, and Volume 1 inch = 2.54 2. Measure and record height in inches and metric 3. Solve inches to centimeter 5. Solve pounds to kilograms 4. Solve milliliter to ounces Materials Needed: Calculator, Chart, Scales, Cylinders, Objects for volume – gold, silver, bronze, two small dice, Worksheets for calculating and recording experiments with their measurements Elaheh’s Activity I started the lesson by asking students about their knowledge pertaining to any other systems for measurement around the world? I talked about the metric system and gave a brief summery about it. I discussed both systems and their definitions. I showed them how we can convert one system to another system using multiplication and division. As an activity, I asked them to measure their friends height in both systems on growth chart, which I provided, and then write down the result on the sheet. Then they converted their height from English system to metric system using multiplication. At the end I passed out worksheets for the students to take home and practice on conversions. Cindy’s Activity I informed the students that we were going to be doing an activity on weight. I used the white board to show them how to convert pounds to kilograms and gave them some examples. Then, I had them weigh themselves on a scale and convert their weight from pounds to kilograms. When they were done I passed out a worksheet with some problems so that they can work on them at home. Tori’s Activity Worked to show the differences between the volume of the water within a cylinder to find the volume of an object. Enjoyed demonstration of previous knowledge of the symbol, pi, or whole number 3.14. Introduced the conversion of milliliters to centimeters cubed and then milliliters to ounces. The students obtained information of how to convert from Metric to English System. The students compared starting results and ending results of measurements with the use of a column graph. Students compared precision in results by comparing milliliters to ounces with the use of a column graph. We would also like to thank Mrs. Crouch for letting us go to her class and for giving us the time and opportunity to work with her students.
