We invite you...
to fill up the tank, pack a tasty snack and use this
guide as your map for an exciting adventure, experiencing that which is truly unique and
special in Southern New Jersey. Bottle Wall & Palaces features two self-guided tours
highlighting the artists and work in the recently published book Found Artists: On the
Country Roads, Side Streets and Back Alleys of South Jersey by Sally Lilychild Willowbee
and exhibited at Perkins Center, Collingswood over the summer of 2014.
Each tour takes a little over two hours and at each stop along the way you’ll see the art works of folk and selftaught artists who live and create in the Southern New Jersey counties of Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, Atlantic,
Cumberland, Salem and Cape May. Often working with recycled or discarded materials reflective of the occupational,
industrial, and agricultural activities of the region, these individuals create work which captures and embodies the
time, place and memory of Southern New Jersey.
All the art is on private property. Please be very respectful. Both self-guided tours leave and end at Perkins Center
for the Arts in Collingswood. At the conclusion of your adventure, we invite you to go to our website: www.perkinsarts.org
and write your comments and feedback on this road to discovery of the arts in Southern New Jersey.
BON VOYAGE!

built bottle walls, bird baths, and shrines
to honor her spiritual practices, peace and
freedom and her beloved Rottweilers. The
pathways are tiled. The foundation, chimney and windows wear magical mosaic
cloaks of stained glass. Feast your eyes on this magic from the
sidewalks please.

with salvaged weathered wood
planks. Knock on his door if you are

Bridgeton 11
Smitty’s Garden of Wheels
590 South Avenue
Bridgeton, NJ 08302
Using ordinary house paints and
brushes, Smitty daubed paint on
everything he could get his hands
on. Dots and dashes, dashes and dots. Wheels, many wheelchair
wheels from his job express a sense of movement. As the spirit
moved, Smitty created new work and the old faded into the background. But since Smitty’s stroke, there is no new art, and this
site continues to fade. Please enjoy from either South Street or the
back street or knock on the door to ask if you can look around.
Continue tour to Vineland 12.7 miles 20 min. >
Optional Stop: Further down the road at the full moon in May

come on around, if the
chain is up use your eyes
to explore. (The original
ticket booth is to the
right.) The Palace was originally built in the 1930’s by George
Daynor following a vision. A place of drama and intrigue for
many of Vineland’s young, it is being rebuilt from recycled stone,
brick, cement and interesting artifacts. Kevin Kirchner and Jeffrey
Tirante, with the help of many, are rebuilding the Palace and
building community as they go. Check out their Facebook page
for planned activities. A haunted house occurs around Halloween.
