he helped coach the Enterprise High School boys
varsity team to their first section championship.
Daniel has run or helped run various soccer camps
in his community and has multiple coaching licenses. He also holds a current U.S. Soccer Federation
Referee license.
Daniel Valdivia
Men’s Head Soccer Coach
Soccer has been a part of Daniel’s life since a very
young age. Both of his parents were born in Jalisco,
Mexico and from the time that he was born until
his high school years Daniel and his family would
travel to Mexico to visit with relatives. When in
Mexico, much of Daniel’s time was spent playing
soccer with local children or watching his uncles
play in competitive leagues.
Daniel played recreational soccer from the age of 5
until the age of 19. He attended Enterprise High
School in Redding, California and was captain
of the varsity soccer team for both his junior and
senior years. He was a Northern Athletic League
(NAL) 1st Team All-League selection at the stopper position. He played on a local U19 Division I
team called Mavericks United after graduating from
high school. Daniel attended Shasta College for
two years but was unable to play collegiate soccer
for the Knights since the program at Shasta College
started the year after Daniel transferred to Chico
State. Daniel continued playing soccer through
intramural soccer at Chico State and also indoor
soccer. After completing his Bachelors degree
in Psychology and his Masters Degree in School
Counseling, Daniel moved back to Redding and
continued playing soccer in a local adult league.
Currently, he enjoys playing in a 7 versus 7 league.
Coaching has also been a part of Daniel’s life since
a very young age. Daniel’s dad, a former Spanish
professor at Shasta College, was also Daniel’s soccer
coach for the majority of his soccer playing years.
Daniel’s first job was at age 12 as a licensed soccer
referee for Palo Cedro Youth Soccer League. Daniel
soon began coaching soccer himself at the age of
17. Daniel has been a head coach or assistant coach
for various Redding Youth Soccer League teams
(U6, U8, U10, U16, U19). In 2005, he helped
coach a U19 Division 3 Redding boys team to a
state championship final. He also coached for his
former high school, Enterprise High School (boys
and girls varsity and boys junior varsity). In 2004,
2
Growing up, Daniel was taught the value of a college education. Although he is a Shasta College soccer coach, he is first and foremost a Shasta College
counselor. Daniel’s desire is to not only assist his
players in obtaining their athletic goals but also
their educational goals. He feels fortunate to have
Shasta College in his community and takes great
pride in working here as a coach and a counselor.
Daniel expects his players to take their education
seriously and their participation in the soccer program seriously.
Daniel and his wife Katie have three children,
(Taylor, Lillian, and Daniel Santiago). In Daniel’s
spare time he enjoys spending time with his family, working in his yard and watching professional
sports on television.
Drew Kerns
Assistant Coach
Soccer has been a part of my life for a long time.
I played U6 – U19 in Palo Cedro and Anderson,
even playing for Adrian Valdivia (Coach’s brother) during my first U19 season. I fell in love with
soccer during the France ’98 World Cup watching
Zinedine Zidane single handedly destroy the reigning World Cup Champions Brazil in a brilliant
match. It was a summer I remember well and in
many ways it forged a love of the game that has
shaped many experiences in my life. During college I played intramurals at Cedarville University
in Ohio before transferring to Chico State to finish
school. Upon arrival, I quickly joined the Chico
State Club Soccer team and enjoyed two seasons
with them. During my time in Chico, I coached
in a youth indoor soccer league, served as an informal coach and mentor for other aspiring players,
and played with an ever faithful weekend pick-up
soccer crowd.
Kenny Breedlove
Assistant Coach
Coach Kenny Breedlove started playing youth soccer at the age of five. Growing up an avid sports fan
Kenny competed competitively in football, baseball, track, BMX, golf and of course, soccer. After
injuries in football and BMX he decided to focus
solely on soccer in high school.
Kenny played three years of varsity soccer for Shasta
High School. In those three years Shasta made the
section championship match each year and won the
title against arch rival Enterprise his junior year.
Kenny was first team all-league and captain his senior year. After high school he tried out and made
Redding’s first pro-am team the Shasta Scorcher’s.
After two years at Shasta College he transferred to
Chico State where he continued playing intramural
and indoor soccer until graduating with a Bachelor’s
degree in Marketing.
Throughout his playing days he refereed and helped
out with soccer camps most summers. His coaching career began as an assistant coach with Shasta
High school where they are the reining two time
Section and Rotary Cup champions.
Kenny currently is the co-owner of Market St.
Steakhouse and Shameless O’Leery’s and is involved
with many groups and organizations in town. In
his spare time he enjoys playing soccer, coaching,
attending 49er and San Francisco Giants games,
spending time with his wife (soon to be baby girl),
family, and friends.
Upon graduating college, I traveled to South Africa
with Athletes in Action and was privileged to play
alongside other college and professional players. It
was a fantastic experience and a real treat to play at
that level. Since then, I’ve played consistently in
local city and traveling leagues while continuing to
work as a skills coach with younger players.
During my spare time I spend a lot of time with
my family and I enjoy working on old bikes, doing
anything on the water, backpacking, spending time
with my friends, and of course playing soccer.

And it was the Lassen College men's soccer team that punished Shasta 10-0 in
Redding on Tuesday afternoon, bolstered by a roster full of international talent.
The Cougars, stacked with footballers from England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia,
Spain, Brazil, Venezuela and Germany, walloped the Knights to the backdrop of
jubilant cheering and singing. Lassen's loud and boisterous nature tested Shasta's
patience throughout the match, especially when the bench raucously celebrated the
team's 10th and final goal late in the match.
"Hey Shasta, play your game!" Knights' coach Daniel Valdivia shouted from the
sideline. "Don't mind them. Don't go down to that level."

Valdivia, an Enterprise High grad in his first season as Shasta's head coach, said that
Lassen displayed a subpar level of sportsmanship and maturity.
"I'm trying to build these guys not just as good athletes but as good men and good
students as well," Valdivia said. " … There's more than just the game. There's a way
of character and a way of holding yourself.
"I think my guys did a good job with that; I can't say the same of the other team."
Lassen and Shasta got into a skirmish in the first half and were testy with each other
throughout.
In that first-half argument, Shasta High graduate and freshman Aze Reda even had
to sit out for a few minutes to calm down.

Reda was one of three Knights to post a shot on goal against the Cougars.
In the first half, Lassen threatened constantly from kickoff onward and finally cashed
in on a nifty, spinning header from defender Lee Peacock, a freshman from Essex,
England.
The Cougars struck again near the 20-minute mark as Dani Gonzales, a freshman
striker from Red Bluff, knocked in a brilliant cross for a 2-0 lead.

Shasta striker B.J. Romac, a freshman and Shasta High graduate, wrestled away a
poor defensive clearance and dished it to Mercy High grad Christian Mondragon for a
great chance.
Statistics and Results
Mondragon, though, sailed a shot too high, which flew just above the crossbar in a
missed opportunity, albeit from a difficult angle. Lassen put things out of reach soon
after, as Lucas Godhino, a sophomore from Sao Roque, Brazil, got a one-on-one
with the Shasta keeper and rapped in a low liner for a 3-0 Cougar lead.
From there, Lassen (3-0-1 Golden Valley Conference, 8-1-4) sailed to seven more
scores as Shasta remained winless at home in 2012.
Shasta (1-3 GVC, 1-10-1) had played Lassen much closer on the road in Susanville
earlier this season, in a 3-1 loss, something that had given Valdivia faith.
"I was hoping that we could have kept it a little bit closer," he said. " ... It's when we
give away some easy ones that it's a little bit hard to swallow."
The Knights have one more shot at the Cougars, in Susanville on Nov. 2.

The Knights, too, due to out-of-town players, didn't have their first tryouts until Aug.
20, so they've had less than two weeks to prepare, and one match under their belts.
"The score did not reflect their performance today at all," said Valdivia, an Enterprise
High grad. "Our play has dramatically improved in a matter of less than two weeks.
"It's just a matter of time. You can only do so much in 10 days."
Shasta pressured Yuba to the brink early and often, as freshman striker B.J. Romac,
from Shasta High, nearly notched the day's first goal on a diving header under 10
minutes in.
A little over five minutes later, Anderson High's Robbie Robertson put the ball in the
net with a sharp shot to the left of the Yuba keeper.
It was the Knights' first lead as a team in the Valdivia era, but it wouldn't last.
Twenty minutes after Robertson's score, poor Shasta midfield play resulted in a lost
ball and a clear lane to the goal for Yuba's Erik Machuca.
Machuca, at the forefront of the 49ers' attack throughout the match, beat the Shasta
keeper with a soft shot with some backspin for the equalizer.
Soon after, a Yuba cross was accidentally booted in by Shasta sophomore Matt
Dellevoet for an own goal, as the 49ers went up 2-1.
In the second half, Shasta and Yuba traded runs and counterratacks constantly.
Romac was taken down hard in the box near 70 minutes in, drawing a penalty, and
Shasta High's Aze Reda drilled home the free shot for another tie.
Yuba returned the favor, though, with a win-sealing penalty kick from tall, strong
striker Ahmed Mohammed Kaled Rahim.
Machuca added a flashy lob shot from near midfield for the 49ers' final goal, near the
end of regulation — catching Shasta's keeper out of the box and trying to set up one
last run.
"It's sometimes just the way it goes with keepers," Valdivia said. "They get
bombarded certain halves more than others, and it's not entirely their fault."
Shasta is still winless, but has lost to two solid programs in Delta College of Stockton,
and now Yuba.
"We've really been stressing speed of play and being aggressive," Valdivia said.
"They're already starting to pick it up.:
The Knights take on Evergreen Valley College on the road Friday, and return home
Oct. 9 for a match against Feather River, after seven straight on the road.

Our men’s soccer program is looking to the future with an entirely new coaching staff for this upcoming season.
We are hoping to bring some much needed consistency to the program. Something that this program needs after
multiple coaching staff changes over the past few years.
We hope to have a few returning players that we can build our team around but we expect this year’s team to be
made up primarily of first year players. We are fortunate to have many skilled soccer players from our Northern
California area and hope that these players will help take our soccer program to the level that we know it can
become.
Our upcoming season schedule will be a difficult one. With the majority of our games on the road, our players will be
challenged with both our conference and non-conference schedule. We look forward to the challenges that we will
face for this upcoming season and encourage any and all soccer enthusiasts to come out and support Shasta College
soccer. Go KNIGHTS!
