FE-2016-6 - Shelving in unattended equipment 2

Joint Committee Issue Paper
NSF Standard(s) Impacted: NSF/ANSI 7
Background:
Provide a brief background statement indicating the cause and nature of concern, the impacts identified
relevant to public health, public understanding, etc, and any other reason why the issue should be
considered by the Committee. Reference as appropriate any specific section(s) of the standard(s) that are
related to the issue.
In NSF 7, clause 5.21.2 states that “Shelving shall be readily removable”.
For unattended equipment (storage refrigerator and/or freezer which has a solid door) that will be typically
placed outside grocery stores/super markets if the shelving is designed to be readily removable, it will
more than likely result in someone removing the shelf from the equipment. For this reason, this issue
should be considered by the Committee.
The intended application of the unattended equipment described above is that the consumer can place an
order online (the store fulfills the order and places the ordered products in this equipment) and pick up the
order by opening a door in this equipment without having the need to enter the store. This equipment is
not a display refrigerator.
Recommendation:
Clearly state what action is needed: e.g., recommended changes to the standard(s) including the current
text of the relevant section(s) indicating deletions by use of strike-out and additions by highlighting or
underlining; e.g., reference of the issue to a Task Group for detailed consideration; etc.
Add the following exception to clause 5.21.1 – Shelves on equipment designed for unattended use, may
be removable.
Supplementary Materials (photographs, diagrams, reports, etc.):
If not provided electronically, the submitter will be responsible to have sufficient copies to distribute to
committee members.
