Abstract
Correspondence, conference papers, photographs, articles, Fort Hays State
University faculty papers, video tapes, audiotapes, manuscripts, journals, periodicals,
and books collected by Nancy Vogel.
Biographical/ Historical Note
Nancy Vogel started working as an Instructor of English at Fort Hays Kansas State
College in 1965. She then went on to get her PhD at the University of Kansas and
served as a teaching assistant there from 1968-1970. She was hired as an Assistant
Professor and then Associate Professor of English at Fort Hays Kansas State College
in 1971, and then in 1977 she became a Professor of English at Fort Hays State
University.
One of Nancy Vogel’s accomplishments at Fort Hays State University was to bring
the author, Maureen Daly in 1989, to the Fall English Workshop on campus and then
to have her speak at the Hays Public Library. While at Fort Hays State University
she started the Young Reader’s Conference in the 1990s, where she worked to bring
third graders to fifth graders up to the Fort Hays State University campus to meet
authors from around the United States. This conference was aimed at encouraging
students to become lifelong readers.
During her time at Fort Hays State University, Nancy Vogel published and edited
several articles. Some of these articles were “The Semicentennial of Seventeenth
Summer: Maureen Daly’s Acts of Love” in the Nebraska English Journal and “Set
Theory: A Paradigm Pertinent to English Education” in the journal English
Education.
While at Fort Hays State University, she was involved in the University chapter of
Phi Delta Kappa and won the President’s Distinguished Scholar’s Award in 1995.
She retired from the University in May 2000.
Scope and Contents Note
The collection contains information about Maureen Daly, whom Nancy Vogel
researched for her manuscripts and articles. Maureen Daly was a Young Adult
Literature author, and writer at several newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune.
She is famous for her Young Adult Literature book, Seventeenth Summer, published
in 1942. This series contains stories, interviews, articles, and autobiographical
information all written by Maureen Daly. There are also book reviews, articles,
audiotapes, videotapes and interviews with information about Maureen Daly. Also
included is Maureen Daly’s personal correspondence.
One of the boxes contains information about President Dwight D. Eisenhower and
his family. Nancy Vogel went to the Eisenhower Presidential Library to research
Eisenhower, Robert Frost, and Andrew Wyeth. Andrew Wyeth was a painter that did
some paintings for Dwight Eisenhower. Included in this box is research done on all
three men and correspondence. Nancy Vogel was also on the Eisenhower Centennial
Committee and corresponded with some of Eisenhower’s family members. There are
also meeting minutes, brochures, pamphlets, newspaper articles, committee
correspondence, and a videotape of President Eisenhower’s grandson, David
Eisenhower, speech and press conference. The box also contains information over
Susan Eisenhower, President Eisenhower’s granddaughter.
Nancy Vogel’s personal papers include correspondence between her and Maureen
Daly, and general correspondence with others. She also had a Young Literature
stamp collection, articles, brochures and pamphlets regarding churches and parishes
and a proposal for a book about Maureen Daly. In her Fort Hays State University
papers she has folders for the Conferences she attended with some of the folders
containing papers she presented, photographs of her at the conference and
correspondences about the conferences. One of the folders contains information from
the Fall English Conference held at Fort Hays State University in 1989 where
Maureen Daly came to the University to give a lecture.

Also included in her Fort Hays State University collection is information on Nancy
Vogel’s sabbatical, correspondence, and her many manuscripts over articles and
books she wrote. There are folders that contain research about Maureen Daly and
William McGivern (Maureen’s husband) and notes and biographical information. At
the end there is information on the President’s Distinguished Scholar Award that
Nancy won, and her involvement with Phi Delta Kappa and the Fort Hays State
University Board of Trustees. She also has a folder with published journal and
periodical articles and then various pictures and memorabilia.

degree, and then articles and stories that she wrote, or was a contributing author, and
interviews done by Maureen Daly. Next are articles, interviews, stories, and book
reviews about Maureen Daly. Lastly is Maureen Daly’s correspondence, various
newspaper articles she collected, and audiotapes and videotapes with her as the
speaker.

Nancy Vogel’s personal papers are arranged chronologically. Her Fort Hays State
University papers are arranged with information concerning Nancy Vogel first, such
as her resume and then her President’s Distinguished Scholar Award and then
organizations she was involved in. Next is her conferences, sabbatical information,
student papers, correspondences, manuscripts, journals and periodicals, and then
pictures and memorabilia.
