Composting under Membrane
Composting with Membrane Covers
To improve the wear resistance, the outside edges are protected with tarpaulin which also
holds the loops and back straps for easy handling, winding and fixing. To ensure the correct
insertion of the probes into the substrate, necessarily required for an appropriate process
control, special openings are stitched off.
Application

Technical Applications
The composting process as pressurized aeration covered by a semipermeable membrane
is a simple, easy to build and very cost-efficient technical solution for various applications:
We can offer this technology in the following configuration:
−− Biological stabilisation to reach the parameters of landfill directives
−− Biological drying prior to incineration
−− Production of refused derived fuel (RDF)
−− Composting of digestate or sewage sludge
−− Biowaste and green waste composting
Windrows or piles: This is technically the simplest solution – pressurized aeration on a sealed
surface. Depending on the size of the membrane, the handling is either done manually
or mechanically operated by STRABAG’s designed cover placement.
Functionality
Box shaped: The membrane is spread over the surface of the substrate between the concrete
sidewalls an entirely seals the box. Due to that fact, the emissions are reduced, rain water
easily runs off the surface and the handling of the membrane is improved.
The applied three-layer laminate is based on an antibacterial inner layer, a UV-stabilized
outer layer and the proper functional and breathable membrane as intermediate layer. Due
to the combination of these layers to the composite material, the achieved performance
allows high breathability for vapor, highest possible retention concerning odor, dust and
germs, prevention of rain water penetration, sturdiness in handling and long product
durability.
Aeration: The supply of fresh air and the discharge of leachate are reached by special aeration
ducts in the floor. More than 30 years of experience in composting, stabilization and
biological drying allow us to find the technically most suitable solution for each application.
Dependent on the substrate and degradation progress, the aeration process is supervised
by STRABAG’s own control system. The process relevant parameters are, subject to
the chosen application, the data from the probes in the substrate (oxygen, temperature).
MOBILE TESTING PLANT

We would be pleased to convince you by
our mobile plant of the simple handling,
profitability and achievable parameters of
this system. You are welcome to arrange
a trial run with us with your own waste.
Our mobile plant with its own laboratory
is containerized, easy to transport, quick
to set up and ready for operation.

1 Surrounding reinforcement is holding handles and back straps. / 2 Special aeration ducts provide
equal supply of air into substrate and collection of leachate. / 3 The ventilators and air supply manifolds
are fixed on the backside of the wall. / 4 The probes are inserted into the substrate through special
openings of the membrane. Data exchange with control system is done wireless or by cable. /
5 The membrane allows vapor and air to permeate (green), odor is blocked (red) and rainwater runs
off on surface (blue). / 6 The leachate from the aeration ducts is collected in a condensate knockout
pot and can be recirculated, depending on the application. / 7 STRABAG’s own control system
allows safe control, supervision and archiving of the biological process. It can be realized as standalone
system directly fixed to the backside of the wall of the boxes or integrated into a central control system. /
8 STRABAG’s winding machine is either running on the crown of the boxes’ back wall or self-propelled
between the sidewalls of the compartments and allows a safe and cost effective handling of large
membranes.
