DORIS LESSING ARCHIVE Provenance: In 2008 Doris Lessing (DL) spoke to Professor Chris Bigsby, Professor of American Studies, and reminded him of the offer she had made some 10 years prior, of gifting her papers to the University of East Anglia. The papers were deposited in the Library Archives in March 2008. The deposit comprised 32 randomly listed folders of correspondence, press-cuttings, printed ephemera, etc. The rest of the collection was in very rough chronological order. The papers have now been sorted by correspondent. A number of series have also been introduced. The Whitehorn Letters series was deposited separately but integrated as a series within the Doris Lessing Archive. See separate detailed description and guide. Whitehorn and Coll MacDonald. Some of the letters are addressed to both of them, others individually, and some she asks to have re-directed. Doris met these two young cadets and their friend Leonard Smith (Smithie) while they were training in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). At the time she was married to her second husband Gottfried Lessing and she was a member of the Communist Party. The letters concern Doris’s life in Rhodesia: her work typing for Parliament and a firm of lawyers; her involvement with the Communist Party and a left wing study group; general politics in Southern Africa, England and Soviet Russia; her relationships with family, friends and lovers; other people’s relationships; the progress of her first novel, short stories and poetry writing; literature in general; domestic life and motherhood. The letters have been scanned and may be viewed on CD-ROM. A detailed guide to the letters is also available on-line. Updated 17/3/16
