The Dutcher family, now so-called, early appears under the
various spellings and misspellings of ye duitcher, je teutscher, de
duytscher, de duijtser, de ducker, de duitcher, de duitscher, de
diser, de ducher, de duecher, de duitser, de duzer, diser, dizer,
deytcher, ducher, duchert, dui;Lser, duther, duytser, duythser,
duyser, duysert, duyrs, duytsen, duytsere, duyschen, duyer,
dutchess, etc., etc., according to the gentlemanly ideas of orthography possessed by early cIerks and later copyists. The family is
singular in having retained the national “ Dutch” nickname as
.
rVlyLllr

“-.

its modern designation. Its members are to be distinguished
from the “ Dutch” family of r‘u’ew England, from the descendants,
mostly most worthy, of that old matrimonial scamp Laurens
Duyts of Holstein, known as the Big Dane or Great Shoe, whose
sale of a wife cost him an ear, and from the family of Du
Sauchoy, now ” Dissoway,” members of which, by one of those
errors which render indices of little r.alue, are given as “ Duyts”
(rg Feb., 1676; N. Y. I). Ch., P-IZI).
The evident meaning of the name, which is a mere tab or
label or nick-name, givi;rg no clue either to the patronymic or
fnmilv name. is I’ the Dutch Man”-man. as the old divine wisely
inspired says, at all times embracing woman, and ” Dutch, :.
from the date of its early use more probably implying a HOIlander than a German. Today every village has its “ Dutchman,”
who most robably is a German; but as early as 1686, when the
Dutchers Krst appear as such, the proper term for a German was
“Hoogdeutser” or I‘ High Dutchman.” Thus, in the 17 14 Ulster
Co., N. Y., List of Freeholders (Clearwater’s Hist. of Ulster Co.,
66), one Hermanus, a German, appears as “Hermanus de Hoogdeutser,” while two of the Dutcher family appear, one as “Cornelis de Duytcher,” and one as “ Dirck de Duytser” (id., 67, 69).
z Jan., 1729, in Connecticut, “ Ellen Ducher, a Dutch girl ” appears,
showing an independent use of the term (Early Lbnlt. Maarn’ages,
4th Book, 87).
Down to 1700, and even later, the Netherland people always
referred to themselves as Duytsm or Ncu?irr Duyfsrm, whence the
“ De ” in
English and American appellation of Dutchmen.
French is of orfro?jl; but in Dutch the definite article “(/Le.”
The U. S. Census of 1790 sl~on~s J-, Dutcher heads of families,
scattered in New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Vermont,
but all are of identical origin.
The early de Duytschers, distinctly so called in church record,
are eight in number, and of one, Mageltje Roelofse, z’. P., Mathilda,
daughter of Roelof, No. 5 hereinafter, the parents are easily
determinable. She was not the daughter of Roelof Corneliszen
van Houten, as is suggested in “Van IIoutens of Bergen,” 27
N. I’. Gen , 163, but was the daughter of Itoelof Willemszen and
Willempje (i. P. Wilhelmina) Thyssen, and is called ‘( de duytser”
once in Kingston entry 1414, 15 Aug., I 7 0 3 .
Of the remaining seven, six-Cornelis, No. 7, Cornelia, No. 8,
Catharine, No. g, Dirck, No. I O. Roelof, No. 12, and David, No. 13,
all first appear at Kingston, in the church records, as parents,
and the seventh, Barent, No. I I, who appears at Tarrytown, and
Cornelis, Dirck, Roelof and David are all stated in one entry or
the other to have been born in adjacent parts of Ulster Co., close
to or at Kingston. It was soon apparent that these seven were
brothers and sisters, for all born or appearing at or near Kingston,
at approximate dates, they acted frequently as godparents to
each others children. Thus Cornelis, 7, and Cornelia, 8, were
sponsors to Dirck’s son Cornelis, 36. Catharine’s husband Jan
Roeland, g, was sponsor to Cornelia’s son Samuel Wels, 2G.
D a v i d , 13, was sponsor with hlaritje Wels, 22, to Dirck’s son
J
David, 35, and to Roelof’s daughter Margaret, 56, and Dirck, I O,
to Roelof’s son Johannes, 52, etc. This sponsorship continues
among those of the next generation, and the same friends act as
godparents to many of the early Dutchers. The military affiliations of the men were close, and resulted finally in a quota of
over 40 men and two captains in the Revolution. When, therefore, it appeared that all the original Dutchers who had sons had
a son John-being the first son of Barent, of Dirck and of Roelof,
the second son of David, the first son of Cathnrine by her husband
Jan Roeland, and the second son of Cornelia, it was evident the
common father was a John, a conclusion rendered positive by the
fact that Cornelia appears once as Cornelia Jansen (K., 64), and
Roelof once as “ rullof Johnson ” while in the militia. So, also,
in similar fashion, the common mother’s name is demonstrated
to be Mar aret, being the name of the only child of Cornelis,
the secon d daughter of Dirck, of Roelof, of Barent and of Cornelia; Catharine having no daughter, and the birth date of
David’s daughter Margaret being uncertain. Nothing in Dutch
genealogy is more certain than such an inference, and it was,
therefore, with a sense of inevitable fulfillment of prophecy that
some three years ago, I discovered “Jan Willemsen ye Duitcher,”
3, who I Sept.., 1656, in Ulster Co., N. Y., appeared and took the
oath of English allegiance at the same time that “Cornelis ye
Duitcher,” 7, failed to appear (/list. of DT/sft*r Cu., 69-70).
This Dutch game of “ Japhet in Search of a Father” thus
settled down to an effort to trace the particular John, son of
William, and to ascertain his relationship, which if any had to be
that of brother, to the Roelof, son of William, whose daughter
Xageltie appears once as “de Duytser.” Our Jan Willemszen
was early proved to be neither Jan Willemszen Yselsteyn, nor
Scuth, or van Burculo, or van Cujanes, or van Leyden, or van
Leuven, or van Loosdrecht, or Bennet, or Vertein, or Cornel, or
Rome(n) van Werkendam, or van Amsterdam, or Sebra, or
Schutt, or any of the remaining Jans “ Willemzen ” catalogued in
Bergen’s Early Settlers of Kings Co., A? Y., or Jan Willemszen
Hooptaeling, husband of Barbara Jans, and prominent at Kingston, whom Burbans, in error, was inclined to identify with Jan
Willemszen van Loosdrech!, who settled at Bergen. But our
Jan may well be identical with the Jan Willemszen, who with his
wife hlargaret or Grietje Cornelis, 22 Jan., 1662, Kingston entry
13, had baptized a son Willem, evidently their first son, and who
may be identical with Jan Willmsen Brant, who with his wife
Gritye Cornelissen, 24 April, 1654, had baptized a son Tys, i. e.
Mathew, no where else appearing of record (K., z 17). The wife’s
name Margaret is strong confirmation of this identification, and
her full name Margaret Cornelisse, i. P. daughter of Cornelis,
explains Cornelis, 7, and possibly Cornelia, 8, and it is almost
conclusive that the young Jacob Barentsen Cool, who with his
recently married wife, hlarretje Simons, appeared as sponsor to
this couple’s first son Willem, 6, sldppm, zz Jan., 1662 (I(., 13),
should also, 39 years later appear as sponsor, 13 April, 1701, to
Catharine de Duytser’s son Jan, 29 (K., x232), and 2g Dec., 1 7 0 1 ,

to Cornelia Jansen de Duytser’s son Jan, 25 (K., 1281 , the name
/an in each case preserving the name of Jacob 2 001’s e a r l y
friend Jan Willemszen. As early as g Oct., 1650 (N. Y. D., 2-28),
“ Jan Helmszen ” appears as sponsor at the baptism of Jacob
Barentzen Cool’s brother Arent; but he may be the Jan Helmsze
van “ Barlt,” Schleswig-Holstein, of ” Rensellaer-Bouwier manuscript” mention (p. 827, note). It ispossibfc that Grietje Cornelis
was daughter of the Cornelis Leenderts whose sister Marretje
became wife of Barent Jacobsen Cool, and so mother of Jacob
Barentsen Cool. The name “Willemsen ” or “ Williamson ” was
common among the Dutch, German and English, and the early
existence of several Williamsons known as “ Englishmen,” explains the need of the tab “ye duitcher” used as early as 1686 on
the “ Dutch ” Jan and his children. Even a Jan Brazdl, “ Engelsman, i. P. Englishman, appears 30 Dec., 1646 (N. Y. D., Z--II),
with a son Jan. IO Nov., 1641, there was a Willem Wi((Pmszeu,

L utch “Jan Willemse” was lieutenant of the local militia, while
at Shrewsbury an English “John Williamson” held the same
office.
That Jan Willemszen and Roelof Willemszen were, almost
certainly, brothers is indicated by the following facts: both
appear about the same dates, 1660-3, at Beverwyck, Fort Orange,
or the present Albany, each the son of a William. Jan, moving
to Ulster Co., has a son Roelof. Roelof’s daughter Mageltje, 5,
moving, also to Ulster Co., has as si>onsors to her child Marretje, No. xg, 25 Aug., 1700 (K., r ISg), Roelof de Duytser, 12, and
Catharina de Duytser, g! Jan’s son and daughter, and 15 Aug.,

Hendrick, 6 Oct., 1714 (N. Y. D., 2-377), is sponsor with Dirkje
Lammerse (Smit), whose cousin soon after married Barent Duytscher! I I, and Mynno (Wilhelmina) Buys, a niece of Hendrick,
married Johannes De Duytscher, 42, son of Barent, II.
Mr. Whittemore, in his DC Dqfsc/rer Genealogy, mainly devoted to the descendants of Roelof de Duytscher, 12, suggests a
Dutcher descent from the “ De Dechiers” of France, and thereby
supplies the inevitable coat of arms. In this country he finds the
ancestor in Dirck Corneliszen Duyster, who in 1630 was employed
by Killaen Van Renssellaer, and was one of those who for him
took title to Rensselaerwyck. Dirck’s son he assumes to be
Cornelis ye Duitcher, No. 7, who is taken to be the father of the
other Dutchers. As Cornelis was not born until 1667, and did
3
not marry until 1691, this theor was always untenable. T h e
recent publication of V a n Rensse 7aer-Bouwier Manuscripts (p. 700
and references there given) shows that Dirck was drowned at sea
in 1636, unmarried, and that his half-brother Willem died in 1635
leaving no son, Willem being an artist or painter of Amsterdam.
“ Duyster ” means the twilight or gloaming.
The record, therefore, begins:
I . WI L H E L M,’ the’name of the father of Roelof and Jan. Remembering that Roelof is stated to be “van Heerden,” it is just
possible that Wilhelm may be the Willem Janszen “van Heerden,” who 18 Dec., 1654, m. Leentje hlartens, the widow of the

5 uyter was slain by the I n6 ians, hlarch, 1654, and his widow,
probably for protection in those troublous times, re-married
without delay, and was herself massacred I Sept., 1655; her
husband by some means escaping (Riker’s drtrlum, 92, 160, 162,
etc.). As Leentje hlartens appears as early as 20 Oct., 2639 (N.
Y. D., Z-IO), she was probably a matured woman at her remarriage, and the entry gives no information whether Willem
Janszen was a widower or single. Heerden was a very small
village, about 30 miles N. N. E. from Arnheim in Gelderland,
Holland. But the matter is pure conjecture, and Willem’s issue,
if any, must have been by an assumed prior marriage.

Willempje Thyssen, his wife, both from Beverwyck, became
Brooklyn Church members (1897, Holl. So., 136, 138). 6 March,
1667, Willempje was sponsor with the well-known Resolved
Waldron (id. 149). Roelof d. soon after, and his widow, before 1674
became the 3d wife of an Corneliszen Buys, son of Cornelis Buys
of Buninck, and Hen Jrickje Janszen Damen, sister of the Jan
Janszen Damen so prominent in early New York, who adopted
Jan Buys as his son. Bergen’s Early Settlers gives a confused
and erroneous history of Jan Corneliszen Buys. The facts appear
in Mrs. Welch’s note on the Boyce Family, 33 N. Y. GetI., 56-57.

Hasbrouck that in 1663 “Jan Willemszen and his wife” in court
at Kingston referred to Jacob Burhans as capable of testifying to
their good character, as he came from their town Einigen In
Brabant. 18 Sept., 1663, “Jan Willemszen ” was fined for venturing outside the Kingston stockade, without a guard, in violation
of the decree made after the Indian massacre of 7 June, 1663.
14 Sept., 1673, “Jan Willemszen” was lieutenant under Capt.

D., 2-x31), son of Harmen Reynierszen, and Jannetie
Cortois or Coutois. Resided at Poughkeepsie. The
family name became Rynders. I aminclined to identify
Harmen and Jannetie with the Harmen Reynderse and
Jannetie Jaspers, his wife, who appear in the R~cards of
New Castle in Delaware, pp. 72, 75, 90, 196, 198. Harmen, owing 128 guilders to Henry Ward, was sued and
claimed he was to have six weeks within which to pay.
The court gave him this time, but he d. before it
expired, May 7-8, 1678. It was so reported to the court,
and as Harmen’s house was under contract of sale to
John Ogle (Oakley?), John was directed to discharge
the debt out of the purchase money. “ Jannetie Jaspers,” widow and sole heir of Harmen, accordingly so
transferred the house. “ Jannetje as erse ” a p p e a r s
as sponsor to our Hermans’ first chi rld, Ko. IOO. If the
identification be correct, Jannetje was a dau. of Jasper
Courtois or Coutois. She ap ears 13 Feb., 1667, as a
sponsor (N. Y. D., 2-86). H!erman Reynders was a

Dyck and Marritje Andriesen, his wife, Thomas. being
grandson of Thomas Jansze van Dyck, the emigrant,
and Sytie Dirks, his wife, from Amsterdam (cons.

of Dirck’ Storm, the emigrant, who sailed 2 Sept., 1662,
with his wife Marie Pieterse Montfoort and three
c/r&‘rerr (not three sons as given by Bergen’s Eariy
SettLers), from Griiningen, Maiery of Bosch, Holland
(1897 I-loll. Sot., r36), with church letters from Hertogenbosch, etc. The Storm and Dutcher marriages
and inter-relations are very numerous. Dir& Storm,
the emigrant, appears in Kingston, N. Y., Records in
I 664. Iic was in New York City in 1665, keeping a
tap-room or inn, and made a failure of it, was fined
for the grievous offence of keeping open after g p. m.,
the then candle-light closing hour of the virtuous
Hollanders, was sued for rent, and was dispossessed.
Being sued for 1701-1., the price of an anlcer of brandy,
he claimed that Pieter Wolphertsen, van Couwenhoven,
had promised to meet the debt, and sued him for some
I rogd. in all, whcrcupon the irascible Pietcr. in the old
time manner, replied that Dirck was a “r3scal of
rascals ” and he would prove it. But, alas! the result
is not recorded (Fernow, Vol. V, ISI, rS6, 1S7, 189, 224,
263, 298, 301, 306! 339). hloving to Brooklyn (Fernow,
Vol. VI, 5~), Dirck appears as a landowner, and in
1671 bought houses and meadows at Bedford, L. I., for
r,4oo gl., “in wheat, peas or rye,” from Meynard
J ournee. In 1673 he was surety on the bond to secure
payment by the constaples, etc., of Brooklyn for land
of Care1 Gabrie (N. Y. Hist. Man., p. S), and in 1675 he
appears as a guardian, and in r6go as administrator in
Orange County. He was a man of education for his
time, and his “round clear hand ” is abundantly evident.
In 1702 he was clerk of Orange Co., N. Y., and after
acting as Vorleser or Church Clerk at Tappan, r6941702, he removed to Tarrytown, N. Y., where he started
the Church Records of “Sleepy Hollow” (cons. T.
Records; Bergen’s &zrb Settlus; Mistor_~~ of t/u DIdtch

The descent of hlaria’s husband through the Van
Weerts, a family repeatedly connected with the
Dutchers, affords me the pleasing opportunity of
correcting, in a note, the error of Bolton’s Westchester
Co., zd. ed., 309, 541, and of the usually precise Riker
(Riker’s Hnrlel)l, 2d ed., IOI note). The Van Weerts
of Tarrytown were not descended from Marten van
Waert, the hatter of Utrecht, kleptomaniac and petty
24
sneak thief, and snapper up of silver spoons at weddings. They descend from Jochem Wouterszen, possibly the “Jochem van Goede,” and later “van Waert.“*

Esopus, near Kingston, Ulster Co., N. Y. Barent appears at
Tarrytown, but his relationship to the other Dutchers is apparent.
His first son (as in the case of Dirck de Duytscher, No. I O, and
Roelof de Duytscher, No. I z) was a /oh, and his second daughter
a Mnr,rrnrel. His second son David (No. qd), seems to have been
named after David, No. 13, just as Barent, No. 66, son of David,
N o . 13, was named after Rarent, No. I I. Barent m. (I ) M a r y

at Huntington, L. I., a John Koncklyne refused with five others
to take the oath of Dutch allegiance (2 N. Y. Col. Man., 641-z).
Barent de Duytscher m. (2) 2g Dec., 17x7 (T. M., 21), Dirkje
Smit, widow of Hendrick Lammerse, by whom she had, 28 March,
1705, a son Lambert (T., 94). The marriage entry gives Barent
as b. at Esopus, and Dirkjc Smit as b. on Gov. Peter Stuyvesant’s
Bouwerie or farm, both at marriage living at Philipsburg. Dirkje
Smil, I believe, was dau. of Cornelis Adrianzen (Aertszen, Ariszen, Arentszen, Ariansc, etc.) “ van Thuyl,” i. E. from Thuyl, in
Gelderland, Holland, who 8 Aug., 16S0, m. Anna Frans of New

afterwards called Blauvelt, also of GOV. Stuyvcsnnt’s Bouwcrie,
and moved to Rockland, then Orange Co., N. Y., where by II Oct.,
1699 (Tappan, 35 and 78; Beer’s Rockland Lb:, Appendix, 3) he
appears as “Smit,” a name of trade or occupation, which became
the general family name. It is possible that an Aert Lambertszen who appears in the 1st Gov. Dongan Tappan Patent in 1682,
was the father of these two brothers. Lambert Aertsen or Adrianszen Smit had 24 Oct., 1695 (Tappan, x6), a daughter Dirckje
Smit, who m. Cornelis Cuypcr, Jr., showing the prevalence of

and hleenske, or Wilhelminn, Jans), and appears as sponsor to
Dirckje’s son Isaac Dutcher, No. 49, while in return Barent Duytser and his wife appear, 25 Sept., 1721, as sponsors to Cornelis
Smit’s dau. Dirckje (Tappan, 380). As several of the Concklings
early appear in Tappan, and as the Smits after living on Stuyvesant’s Bouwerie, on the Isle of Manhattan, moved over to
Tappan, and were very prominent there, it is probable that Barent
de Duytscher came south from Kingston to the old Orange Co.,
and thence with many of the Tappnn settlers, the Minnes, Storms,
etc., to Philipsburgh, by 1700.

Vinje and Xdrianna CuveillC, from Valenciennes, parents of
ohn Vinjc, said to be the first malt child of European parents
i, orn in old Dutch New York or New Netherland, b. circa 1613.
The history of the Vinje connections is the history of early
New York, and although the name perished with the deaths of
Jan Vinje and his son Gosen. many thousands of descendants,
through the Verplancks, the Volckertsens, the Tienhovens, and
the families of Roes, Rosencrans, Schamp, Lequier, Wessels,
Schuyler, Van der Peel, Ackerman! Holst, Haldron, Balch, Soy,
Ament, etc., are now living. Christina Vinje’s husband, Dirck
Volckertsen, was a prominent farmer in Brooklyn at Bushwyck
Creek, and his house, built in 1640, is described in the P r o v o s t
Fn~u’~~, p. 77, His quick temper, which led to recorded quarrels,
was inherited by his daughter, and how Madaleen “sassed” the
Fire Warden Litschoe, and called him “chimney sweep” until
his twelve leather water buckets shivered; how she was fined z
p o u n d s flemish therefore! as insulting the grave dignity of a
magistrate. and had to defend herself alone, as her groom shamefacedly stayed away from the little court; how the Orphan’s
Court safeguarded the interests of her child by her first husband;
how she and Harmen Hendricksen sold liquor to the Indians;
how she being nick-named “The Flying Angel,” was therefore
banished and pcrmittcd to return; how the pair acquired lands
and riches at Kingston; how she fell out with Capt. Brodhead,
hated by the Dutch, and bathed his face in New Year’s ale, and
at last, full of years, died at Rochester:-all these and other
stories of a pioneer age must await a fuller opportunity for the
telling. kosezkrans paurily may be consulted as to the European Rosenkrans antecedants and provides a coat-of-arms, but is
defective as to early local history. Harmen, as a soldier at
Kingston,, was the only captive to escape from the Indians after
their uprising, Sept. 29, 1659, in reprisal of the Dutch attack, he
having been captured, bound and exposed helpless to the rays of
the autumn sun (N. Y. Col. Man., XIII, p. x15), He had been
admitted as a “small ” burgher of New York in 1658, and was one
of the patriotic petitioners at Kingston in 2684 who were fined
for petitioning for lerrve to elect town officers, etc., by Gov.
Dongan. His original will is, I am reliably told, still in existence.

Sot., 29); m. Gertrude or Gerty, sometimes called “ Herty ” -?
The use of “ H ” for the Dutch “ G” and vice versa, especial1 b y
English scribes, is not infrequent, as for example the case o Y t h e
“ Goes ” family, transformed to “ Hoes,” and the contraction
“Germina” or “Herrnina” for Wilhelmina. The Dutch G is a
gutteral foreign to English pronunciation. Christopher’s record
is to be searched for at and near Salisbury, Conn., as is the case of
most of his brothers and sisters. As Salisbury is near the
New York border, many early Dutchers and Dutch settlers came
over to Germantown, Claverack, Athens or Loonenberg, etc.,
N. Y., for baptisms. Other baptisms were by travelling ministers.
Many are recorded in Connecticut Town Records. The spelling
Dutcher was early adopted by the English. In 1728 Christopher
was witness to his father’s appointment as brander of .horses, I.. 2 ,-.
The 3rd Wednesday. of. May, 1737,’ twenty-five Salisbury Pro:
prietary rights were sold, and Christopher Dutcher was a purchaser (Hisf. of LiZc/r/TE/d, Cbnx, 547). IZ April, 1739, the first
meeting of proprietors was held, Christopher being present, and
19 Dec., 1739, Canaan, Litchfield Co., Conn., was incorporated and
the first meeting adjourned to Christopher’s hpuse (Id., 267, 268).
.
The. Canaan. proprietor’s book sh’cnvs the ‘tillotment, Nov., 1739, of
. 55 acres to Christopher. In 1740 his commission as Ensign of
the Company or Train Band of Canaan issued (Coma. Co!: Reco&+:++$$;@j

~;~~~~piil’.ah~~~~~~~, 1742, the Canaan Town Meeting was held, and
adjourned to EnsIgn Dutcher’s (Litchjrh’ Cb. Hist., 268). 2 July,
1754, Richard Baldwin, for ;662 conveyed 29% acres on the
Housatonic River, adjoining Christopher’s house-lot to him. His
will, proved 15 Sept., 1755, mentions his widow, his son Relof
“under 21,” and his daughters “ Joannekee ” and “Arkyonekee,”
wife of Wm. Whitney of Salisbury. 24 July, 1758, his widow and
son Roelof signed an agreement as to the estate of Christopher’s
father, Roelof, No. 12. “Christopher’s Canoe Place” was an
44
old Weatogue boundary (HI’s~. of Litc/lfirh’Co., szz). To Francis
B. Trowbridge, author of the Aslriry and the 2d ed. of the Trowbridce Cemalop, and to Dr. Van Alstyne, I am indebted for
many Connectrcut notes; but the further searcher will certainly
discover many new facts. Issue, so far as ascertained:

The different spellings of the Chisem name are given to
illustrate the truth that there was no authoritative spelling in the
old records. John Chisem was baptized as a “ Sysy,” married
as a “ Tjissem,” and had children as a “ Chissel,” a “ Chissem ”
and a ” Schissim.” As to such variations “Chinese fidelity indices” are delusive, and no one but the expert knows the instinct
which first guides him through unknown paths, along which the
“ wayfaring man though a fool ” need not subse uently err.
