Program: The Origins of the Needle
The Space Needle made headlines around the world when it opened
in 1962 for the Seattle World’s Fair, but while it was an instant success, it was long in the making. Knute “Skip” Berger’s talk will look at
why and how the Needle was built, examine the process of its design,
conception, and construction. Mr. Berger’s research is based on original documents and interviews with some of the people who financed,
engineered and built the Needle. What began as a doodle on a placemat in a hotel coffee shop became a global symbol of the Space Age,
an emerging high-tech city, and the aspirations of an America looking
to the future amid the Cold War. It has been called “America's Eiffel
Tower.” The story of the Needle and her builders is a remarkable one.

Volume 48 No. 5, January 2013
Published 10 times a year
As we start this New Year, I hope everyone had a
very Merry Christmas and some much deserved
“downtime” to reflect on the many blessings of this
past year. As many of us set new personal goals and
challenges for 2013, this year will also be a very special and meaningful year for our ASCE Seattle Section, as we celebrate 100 years of serving our Seattle
members as an official Section of ASCE. In honor of
this Centennial year, many of our members have been working extremely
diligently planning out a year-long program to “honor the People, Projects, and Policies central to the advancement of the civil engineering profession and development of the Seattle area.” As I think about some of our
most significant achievements that played a key role in Seattle’s growth
over the past century, many of our iconic Seattle area landmarks come to
mind—the Chittenden Locks, our two floating bridges across Lake Washington, Stevens Pass, and of course, our beloved Space Needle. We have
been blessed with forward-thinking civil engineers in our history that
were able to balance the need for growth with the need to protect what
makes our part of the country so special—our abundant water and mountains. I look forward to this Centennial as we celebrate our rich engineering heritage and some of our most significant figures that contributed
greatly to our region—pioneers such as Hiram Chittenden, John Stevens,
and R.H. Thomson. Throughout 2013, our Section has many special events
planned including a special presentation on the history of the Space
Needle at our January dinner meeting, Centenary exhibits at Sea-Tac
Airport, a Washington State Report Card, and a gala dinner to close out
our 100th anniversary. It is going to be an exciting year!

All of these events and activities would not be possible
if it were not for the countless volunteer hours by our
Centennial planning committee, co-led by Sunny Rose
and Ron Bard. They have been planning for over a
year to get to this starting point in our Centennial, and
I heartily thank everyone involved for their sacrifice
and commitment. Lastly, I would like to express our
gratitude for all the sponsors for the Centennial who
have provided the resources that allow us to celebrate
this special year.
Looking forward to a hopeful and prosperous 2013!

The ASCE Seattle Section Turns 100 Years Old in 2013!
By Sunny Rose, P.E., Centennial Committee Co-Chair
The ASCE Seattle Section was founded on June
30, 1913, and has since grown to nearly 2,500
members within King County and the surrounding areas including Kitsap and Snohomish
Counties. The Section’s commitment to the advancement of civil engineers is demonstrated
through its leadership, sense of community and
dedication to the profession. From organizing
professional development opportunities to recognizing the outstanding achievements of local
civil engineers, the Section has a longstanding
history of fostering the growth of civil engineers
and celebrating their successes.
In 2013, the ASCE Seattle Section celebrates its
centennial year. To commemorate 100 years of
professional service and civil engineering
achievements, the Section is hosting a yearlong
centennial celebration. This program will feature
a series of events and activities to both honor the
professional community and engage the public
and civic leaders in the celebration of local civil
engineers.
From the bridges and infrastructure that connect
the diverse landscape of Puget Sound, to the
landmarks that distinguish the Seattle area as a
hub for innovation and technology, civil engineers have profoundly shaped the development
of the Puget Sound region. The centennial year
celebration will honor the People, Projects and
Policies that are monumental to both the advancement of the civil engineering profession
and development of the Seattle area.
To kick off the year, the Seattle Section has developed the Civil Engineers that Built Seattle –
Centenary Exhibit to showcase the heritage of
civil engineers in the Northwest and to raise
public awareness within the non-engineering
community of the essential contribution of civil
engineers.
The exhibit’s introductory panel.
The series of 10 museum-quality display panels spotlight the “people” aspect of civil engineering. The introductory
panel is shown above. The panels focus on the civil engineers who have built projects and created organizations that
have contributed to the growth of Northwest Washington state. From George Vancouver’s mapping of the Puget
Sound, to Hiram Chittenden’s locks, railroad tunnels at Stevens Pass, and power generation at Snoqualmie Falls, the
exhibition describes the dreams, failures, and political battles that characterized these works and the civil engineers
that created them.
The exhibit will open on January 14, 2013 at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport at Gate B4.

at the Grand Hyatt Seattle. With the theme “Building
Resilient Communities Through Policy and Mitigation,”
the meeting has much to offer engineers, scientists, emergency managers, and policy makers, highlighting earthquake policy issues while also offering insights from researchers and practitioners from around the country. A
free half-day pre-meeting workshop will be held February 11 on “The Canterbury Earthquakes—Lessons and
Implications for Regions Worldwide.”
If you register by January 15, the registration fees are
$475 for regular EERI members ($650 nonmembers) and
$295 for EERI young professional, student, and retired
members. For nonmembers who become EERI members,
the fee is $700 — a combined savings of $220. After January 15, fees will increase by $100. The program brochure

Board Meeting Minutes
Minutes for December 12, 2012
The December 12 minutes will be published in the
February 2013 newsletter.
The purpose of the mentor night activity has been to
bring as many practicing engineers together with as
many students as possible. We are trying to inspire the
students, most of whom are freshmen and sophomores
as well as high school seniors, toward a career in engineering. The mentor night allows engineers to relay their
experience in the profession and answer questions posed
by students. The event will be kicked off with a brief
introduction of the engineering disciplines represented
by the volunteers followed by open forum where the
students visit various tables and converse with the mentors. Mentors are encouraged to bring a sample of work
that will fit on a 30" x 30" table top for potential discussion with the students.
