Govern or Jacob Leisler who has b e e n justly styled the Proto Martyr of
A merican I ndependence have been when attempted in detail in all o r
nearly all instances inexact This was d oi I b tl e s s owing to the fact that
unti l within th e past three years the B aptismal and Marriage R ecords of the
R eformed Dut ch Church in the city o f N e w York which contained the data
fo ra correct history o f his family were seale d books or at least open only
to a favore d few The publi c ation o f these records in the N e w York
Genealogi c al and Biographical R ecord has opened a wi de fi eld for ge n e a
logical inquiry respecting the early families o f New York into whi ch in the
presen t instance the writer has availed himself o f the opportunity of enter

grees of the early Dutch settlers than the changes sometimes found i n
the nam e o f the same individual A mong these will be noted those which
ri age wh o frequently bear

Lieutenant Governor and C ouncil O n the 2 8 th Jan 1 69 1 , Capt R ichard
Ingoldsby arrived in New York b earing their Maj esties Commission as
C aptain o f Foot and without producin g any legal au thority he demanded
of Leisler the p ossession of the fort whi c h was refused Henry S lough te r
w h o had be en appointed G overnor in Chief of the Province arrived on
th e 1 9 th of March following l ate in th e day and Leisler having noti c e
thereof that sam e night ( tho ugh very late ) took care to deliver the fort to
