Cheese Days!
Cheese Boxes on
Display
Marlene Schmalbeck has been collecting cheese boxes since the summer
of 1964 when she purchased her first at
Frank Christopher’s house auction in
Albany. She has gotten most of her
boxes from auctions and a few from
resale shops.
Before machines made cardboard
boxes to hold items, cheesemakers
packaged their cheese in wooden boxes
with lids and advertisements for their
cheese. Most were 1, 2, 3, 5, and 15
pound boxes. Her biggest box held
limburger cheese and is the only limburger one she ever found. It’s a Blue
Seal from Monroe Badger Cheese
Company. She got it at a sale in Brodhead. Her most expensive box cost her
$35.
Many of the cheese boxes are from
cheese companies in other states such
as Ohio and New York. And Illinois.
She has boxes from Monroe, Brodhead, Manitowoc, Cumberland and
Playmouth in Wisconsin. While on
vacations, she has found them for sale
in states other than Wisconsin. The
Borden Company had cheese factories
all over the country.
In many homes, these boxes found
many uses other than for cheese.
Farmers kept boxes of varying sizes in
their sheds for screws, nails, etc.
Because Marlene is trying to downsize, she wants to sell her collection so
if you’ve always wanted a collection of
some sorts, call Marlene at 938-4442
for more information. Thanks Marlene
for bringing a little cheese memorabilia
into the library to help us celebrate
2016 Green County Cheese Days.
Check out some books on cheese and
Green County Cheese Days too. Lots
of local information to enjoy.

Roosevelt will visit the
library’s adult program!
We can hardly wait til she
comes. Jessica Michna
will recreate Eleanor
Roosevelt who will share
her tragedies and triumphs with the audience.
She has grown from “the
shy, homely orphan into a
confident, driven woman.” As Harry Truman
said she is “The First Lady of the World” so come
to the Monticello Library on Monday evening, October 3rd at six o’
clock where you can meet
Mrs. Roosevelt and ask
her questions. We are
hoping for a good sized
audience to welcome her
to Monticello. If you have missed seeing Ms Michna at the Monroe Senior Center or at the Mon ‐
cello Historical society, now is your chance to see her charac‐
ters live right before your eyes. 2
