This Week In Gustavus Athletics April 19 - April 26, 2009 Contact: Tim Kennedy (507) 933-7647 GUSTAVUS INSIDE ATHLETICS Mike DesLauriers Becomes All-Time Leader in Assists - Mike DesLauriers (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) became the baseball program’s all-time leader in assists after recording seven assists during the doubleheader against Carleton last week in Northfield. DesLauriers brought his total to 376, surpassing Joe Thorvig’s mark of 371 assists, which was set in 2002. Lisa Brown Finishes 12th In Javelin Throw At Mt. Sac Relays - Gustavus Adolphus women’s field athlete Lisa Brown (Sr., Lake Crystal, Minn.) finished 12th in the javelin throw at the Mt. SAC Relays with a NCAA automatic qualifying throw of 147 feet, 9 inches in Walnut, Calif. on Friday. Her mark ranks second in Division III this season. Brown was the only Division III athlete to compete in a field that included 22 of the top collegiate and Olympic javelin athletes in the country. Kim Kreiner, a four-time U.S. javelin champion, won the event with a distance of 182 feet, 6 inches. Softball 18-Game Win Streak is Second Longest in Program History - Gustavus extended its winning streak to 18 games after sweeping Saint Mary’s in St. Peter on Sunday to remain undefeated in the conference. The streak is the second longest in the program’s history behind the 22-game streak in the 1990 season. Gustavus is now 27-3 overall and 16-0 in the MIAC. Gustavus Sends Track and Field Athletes to Prestigious Drake Relays - Gustavus will send five athletes to the Drake Relays this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa. Those competing include in the meet include Lisa Brown (Sr., Lake Crystal, Minn.) in the javelin and Tyler Geyen (Sr., Watertown, Minn.) in the 110 meter hurdles and 4x400 meter relay. Other members of the 4x400 meter relay competing include Cole Carlson (So., Mora, Minn.), Matt Leeb (So., Kasota, Minn.), and Colby Citrowske (So., Canby, Minn.). http://gustavus.edu/athletics NOTABLE PERFORMERS Colin Rust, a junior from Chanhassen, MN, helped the Gustavus men’s track team to take first out of 13 teams at the Carleton Relays last week in Northfield. Rust showed depth in jumping events, winning the triple jump with a leap of 41-9 1/4 and finishing third in the long jump, leaping a distance of 20-1 3/4. Sam Broderius, a sophomore from Hector, MN, was a double event winner in the Manitou Relays at St. Olaf as as she won the discus and the shot put with NCAA provisional marks of 144-8 and 45-3 3/4, respectively. Her shot put mark currently ranks fourth in the nation and tops the MIAC performance list and her discus throw also tops the MIAC list, and is seventh nationally. Alan Woitas, a junior from Sleepy Eye, MN, helped the Gustavus men’s baseball team to a 1-6, 6-0 split at Carleton last week. Woitas led the squad at the plate as he combined to go 5-for-9 and scored three runs in the doubleheader. He currently carries a .359 batting average and leads the team in hits and runs scored. Rachael Click, a senior short stop from Rochester, MN, helped her team win two games against St. Benedict last Saturday in St. Joseph, going 6-for-6 at the plate, hitting two home runs, scoring five runs, and driving in five runs. Click currently has a .901 slugging percentage and leads the team in hits (36), RBI (29), and home runs (8). Golf at Saint John’s Invite All Day KEY EVENTS THIS WEEK Softball - The Gusties will play St. Thomas this week in regular season conference play as they host the Tommies for a doubleheader on Tuesday in St. Peter. St. Thomas (15-1) is just one game behind the Gusties (16-0) in current MIAC standings. In other conference match-ups, the Gusties will also take on Concordia in Moorhead on Wednesday, and St. Catherine’s on Saturday in St. Peter. Baseball - Gustavus will host two conference doubleheaders this weekend in St. Peter. The Gusties will take on Augsburg on Saturday and St. Olaf on Sunday. The Gusties, Auggies and Oles are all currently in a tie for fifth in current conference standings. Track and Field - Gustavus will host the Drake Alternative Relays on Saturday in St. Peter. Eleven schools from around Minnesota and Wisconsin will send their men’s and women’s teams to the meet to compete. Field events are set to begin at 10:30 a.m., while track events will begin at 12:15 p.m.
