JOKE OF THE WEEK………
Harold was an old man. He was sick and in the hospital. There was one young nurse
that just drove him crazy. Every time she came in, she would talk to him like he was
a little child. She would say in a patronizing tone of voice, "And how are we doing
this morning, or are we ready for a bath, or are we hungry?"
Old Harold had had enough of this particular nurse. One day, Old Harold had
breakfast, pulled the juice off the tray, and put it on his bed side stand. He had been
given a urine bottle to fill for testing. The juice was apple juice. So .. you know where
the juice went!
The nurse came in a little later, picked up the urine bottle and looked at it. "My, but
it seems we are a little cloudy today .." At this, Old Harold snatched the bottle out of
her hand, popped off the top, and drank it down, saying, "Well, I'll run it through
again. Maybe I can filter it better this time."
The nurse fainted ...! Old Harold just smiled!
DON'T MESS WITH OLD PEOPLE!!!!

WORD OF THE WEEK…………
laissez-faire
\less-ay-FAIR\
noun
a doctrine opposing governmental interference in economic affairs beyond
the minimum necessary for the maintenance of peace and property rights
a philosophy or practice characterized by a usually deliberate abstention from
direction or interference especially with individual freedom of choice and action
EXAMPLES
"Laissez-faire is all well and good until something goes wrong." — John Gutfreund,
quoted in The New York Times Book Review, April 18, 2010
"The International Olympic Committee said Monday that they were pleased at how
athletes were using social media.… 'We take a very laissez-faire attitude,' IOC
spokesman Mark Adams says." — From an article by Kelly Whiteside in USA Today,
February 11, 2014
DID YOU KNOW?
The French phrase "laissez-faire" literally means "allow to do," with the idea being
"let people do as they choose." The origins of "laissez-faire" are associated with the
Physiocrats, a group of 18th-century French economists who believed that
government policy should not interfere with the operation of natural economic
laws. The actual coiner of the phrase may have been French economist Vincent de
Gournay, or it may have been François Quesnay, considered the group's founder
and leader. The original phrase was "laissez faire, laissez passer," with the second
part meaning "let (things) pass." "Laissez-faire," which first showed up in an English
context in 1825, can still mean "a doctrine opposing governmental interference in
economic affairs," but it is also used in broader contexts in which a "hands-off" or
"anything-goes" policy or attitude is adopted.

THE LIBRARY CORNER………..
By Jane Durnan, Librarian
Don’t forget to check out Two New books that have been donated to the Library
The Good Lord Bird by James McBride is a
National Book Award Winning novel about a
young who joins John Brown’s anti-slavery
crusade and who must pass as a girl in order
to survive.
It is an easy read if you pay attention as
he/she finds the way to being a hero/heroine.
Very educational and very well written.
The second book is JEEVES and the
Wedding Bells by Sebastian Faulks and
written as an homage to P.G.
Wodehouse and is very funny. You feel
if you are reading the real Wodehouse,
whome we all remember as having a
great sense of humor, albeit British
humor. You will find yourself laughing
out loud which is a good sign of a good
book!

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS:
“THE CIDER HOUSE RULES”
7:00 in the Community Room
A protégé to a physician who runs an orphanage sets off to see the world, but reality
soon intrudes on his youthful idealism and moral certitude.
The Cider House Rules is a 1999 American drama film
directed by Lasse Hallström, based on John Irving's
novel of the same name. The film won two Academy
Awards, and was nominated for the Academy Award
for Best Picture, along with four other nominations at
the 72nd Academy Awards. John Irving documented
his involvement in bringing the novel to the screen in
his book, My Movie Business.
John Irving won the Academy Award for Best
Adapted Screenplay, while Michael Caine won his
second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor,
his first coming in 1986 for the film Hannah and Her
Sisters.
Few movies touch you in a way this one does.
Independent movies are so good. This one has no
Hollywood, no glamour, just a straight movie that tells a simple story in an evocative
way. Tobey Maguire is excellent, and obviously an emerging talent. Michael Caine
(doing his first American accent) gives a usually superior performance and gets a
well deserved Oscar for his part. The movie follows the path mostly of Maguires
character as he journeys with sharecroppers and the people at the orphans home. It
is heartbreaking to see the little orphans so hopeful they will get parents, as well it is
heartbreaking to see Tobey Maguire's character go through so many different
parents that don't treat him so well. The scene with Erykah Badu caused a lot of
controversy with abortion rights groups. The general intensity between Lindo and
Badu is excellently done and the conclusion among that part of the movie will not
leave you easily. Recommended strongly, there needs to be more movie like this.

CAN YOU FIND IT!
This Week 4 of you found the

part of the Mary Poppins Movie
Poster in the Community Room. I
wasn’t sure anyone was going to
find it! Congratulations to Sue P.,
John E., Jean S. and Jane D.! You
all have a sharp eye for detail…….
Let’s see how many of you can identify the location of the image to
the right……
Think of this as a good excuse to get some exercise and to do some
exploring! No hints for this one!
Please put your answers in the Suggestion Box!

FROM THE SUGGESTION BOX
The Question was raised as to what should Club
Members do in the event that the Fire Alarm goes
off?
In New Hamphsire, Fire Policy is determined at the
local community level – by the local Fire Chief – and
while he/she can/should and often does rely on
advice from the State’s Fire Marshall’s office – is not
obligated to do so. The local fire chief has not issued
specific orders relative to the Club portion of the building – which for fire purposes
has a two hour fire separation wall from the The Inn and Gardens.
Let me give you my personal advice………………
1.
2.
3.
4.
Never assume that an alarm is a malfunction or a drill. Your life could depend
on it.
Do not use the Elevator unless directed to do so by the Staff or by Emergency
Personnel.
At the very least get dressed so that you could evacuate if you had to.
In the absence of a known problem --- especially smoke --- you do have the
option of staying in your Residence. If you choose to leave your Residence –
and if it is safe to do so – you can gather in the Bistro.
We have to assume a worst case that the Alarms will continue to sound until the
Fire Department arrives on-scene and authorizes them to be turned off. That can be
a ten minute period that feels like an eternity. The alarm being turned off does not
necessarily mean that there is no emergency or that the emergency is under
control. It indicates that Emegency Personnel are here and they are directing the
actions to be taken. If evacuation is needed – you will be directed by
Fire/Emergency Personnel as to where to go.
This is an extremely safe and well protected building. If I lived on the 3rd floor and
I could easily and safely use the stairs – I would carefully and slowly head for the
Bistro. If I were not comfortable with stairs I would stay in my Residence – but
ready to leave if I got that knock on the door.
