Dear Member,
At AlaTrust Credit Union, we are committed to protecting your personal information and providing you
a convenient, secure way to conduct transactions. We are excited to announce that we will begin the
transition to debit cards containing EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa), also known as chip cards,
in May 2017.
In addition to a new debit card design, the new debit card will come with the following feature:
•EMV Security Chip Technology: Your new card will have an embedded microprocessor chip that
stores and protects your data. It will help increase security and reduce fraud. The EMV chip will be
in addition to the standard magnetic strip.
What you need to know:
•Your new debit card will be mailed early May 2017. If you have not received your new card by
May 15, 2017 please call a member service representative at 1-800-264-8031 or you can send a
secured message once logged in to online banking.
•New cards will be mailed to all cardholders, regardless if they are primary or secondary cardholders.
Your debit card number and your expiration date will change. The new number on your debit card
will allow us to add the functionally of Apple Pay and Samsung pay in the near future. Mobile pay
will be implemented sometime toward the end of 2017.
•For security reasons, each secondary cardholder (listed on the account as a cardholder at the time
of mailing) will receive a new individual card number, CVV number and expiration date.
•If you plan to use your card at any ATM, you will be required to use a PIN. You can select your
unique PIN during the activation of the card or call at a later time to select your PIN.
•If you have automatic payments made with your current debit card, you will need to make sure to
contact each vendor with your new updated card number. This will help avoid any interruption in
your service when you receive your new chip card.
•For your convenience, we have included frequently asked questions. If you have any additional
questions or inquiries before the conversion date of May 22nd, 2017, please call us at 1-800-2648031.
We’re proud of our new card offerings and we are excited to make them available to you. As always,
we will remain committed to you as our members are at the heart of all we do.
Sincerely,
Steve Nix

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In an effort to enhance security, your new debit card now includes chip technology. The embedded chip on your card improves fraud
protection when you make purchases at chip-activated terminals. It also provides global acceptance.

You can call 1-877-745-4569 to activate your new debit card, select a custom PIN, and report a debit card as lost or stolen 24 hours
a day / 7 days a week. All new cards sent May 2017, MUST be activated by June 30, 2017. Please note that you must receive your

Yes. A new PIN will be mailed to you after you receive your new debit card. You can select your unique PIN by calling the number on the
activation label (1-877-745-4569) and choosing the PIN option.
My existing card does not expire for quite a while; can I continue using my existing card until expiration?
No! Your existing card will be disabled following the conversion. Instructions will come with your new card to ensure it is ready to use
on or after May 22, 2017.
What is EMV?
EMV stands for Europay, Mastercard® and Visa®. EMV security chip technology is becoming the global standard for credit card and debit
card payments. This smart chip technology features debit cards with embedded microprocessor chips that store and protect cardholder
data. This standard has many names worldwide and may also be referred to as: “chip and signature.”
What information is stored on the chip?
The chip stores information needed to complete transactions such as the card number and / or expiration date. The chip card does not
contain your personal account information or account balance information.
How does chip technology protect my information?
Every time you use your card at a chip-activated terminal, the embedded chip generates a one-time use code. This code is virtually
impossible to counterfeit and helps reduce in-store fraud.
Will my EMV chip debit card eliminate fraud?
Chip card technology provides an additional layer of security to help reduce the risk of fraud, but it cannot completely prevent fraud from
occurring. It is still important to keep your card number and PIN information secure.
Will all merchants be able to accept my EMV (chip) debit card?
Yes! Your card will be accepted at all merchant locations. If a merchant does not have a chip card reader simply swipe your card using
the standard magnetic strip.
My spouse and I both have AlaTrust Credit Union debit cards, and I only received one card. Will my spouse receive a card?
Yes. As a security feature, all cards being issued with this conversion will have a unique number and will arrive separately.
What do I need to do if I have preauthorized or recurring payments that are tied to my existing AlaTrust Credit Union debit card?
To ensure there is no interruption in recurring or preauthorized payments (such as monthly telephone, electricity, gas bills, insurance,
clubs, etc.), contact the merchant on or after May 22nd to add your new card number and expiration date.
What should I do with my old card?
Please destroy your AlaTrust Credit Union debit card as soon as you have activated your new card.
