Over chapters seven and eight in the epistle to the Romans, Paul uses the
word ‘law’ variously to speak of ‘marriage law’ (Romans 7:2), the ‘Law of
Moses’ (7:6), the ‘law of God’ (7:2), the ‘law of my mind’ (7:22), ‘the law
of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus’ (8:1), and the ‘law of sin and death.’
Clearly Paul is using the word ‘law’ to speak not just of ordinances but of
various regimes or systems or powers.
His argument is complex but essentially he is showing us that the ordinance
of the Mosaic Law reveals in us another law called the ‘law of sin and
death’ and the incapacity for us to keep the Law of God unaided. There is
therefore a conflict of laws inside our humanity. The ‘law of sin and death’
in opposition to the ‘law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus.’ As Paul has it,
‘For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by
sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he
condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirements of the law might be
fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the
Spirit” (8:3-4).
These two verses are right at the heart of the work of Christ and are the key
to our life and faith. The Law of God describes something we cannot obtain
apart from Christ. Law unmasks our brokenness and powerlessness to ever
respond rightly to God. We are then compelled to realise that Jesus Christ is
the only person who can, and who has responded to God in the fullness that
the Law describes.
But we are not left there in a state of hopelessness. For not only has God
made the first move toward us, but he has also in Christ completed the
second move to respond to him. Now by the Spirit through faith we have
been included in Christ vicariously. Once we are arrested by this grace, and
embrace it by faith, we discover a new kind of freedom to respond—or as
Paul has it: we are now under the influence of the ‘law of the Spirit of life in
Christ Jesus.’
In faith
