Sherrena used the insurance money from Lamar and Kamala’s former
apartment building to buy two new duplexes.
Doreen’s apartment was in disrepair with a broken toilet and clogged sink.
The house failed the tenants and the tenants failed the house. The family
became lethargic and depressed. The children missed homework, and their
grades dropped.
Natasha gave birth to a baby boy, Malik Jr. The next day she swaddled her
new baby and took him back to where her family was living in the rat hole.

Chapter 22
Vanetta’s daughter, Tembi, pulled the fire alarm in the Lodge, a homeless shelter,
and the family was forced to move. Vanetta and and her friend Crystal were
approved for a run-down apartment after trying to rent over 73 places. Crystal and
Vanetta got into a fight, causing damage to the apartment. Vanetta paid for the
damages and kicked Crystal out. She later received a call from Child Protective
Services and suspected Crystal had notified them. Later, a court scene unfolds
where Vanetta is represented by a public defender for an armed robbery charge
involving a stolen purse. The public defender argued that she was waking up at 5
am every morning to look for housing, attend GED classes, and care for children.
The judge imposed an 81-month sentence or 15 months in prison and 66 on
probation. Crystal finds peace at church while making a living as a sex worker,
because she was found ineligible for SSI, and her only source of income came

TO ATTEND AA MEETINGS AND GET DRUG

IS MAKING HIM MISERABLE, HE HAS TO WORK A
REPETITIVE JOB AND FEELS HIS LIFE IS IN A LAME
CYCLE. HE SOON GROWS TO HATE AA AND WHAT IT
DOES FOR HIM. HE FEELS TRAPPED IN A CYCLE OF
HORRIBLE MONOTONY(273)

POINT HE RELAPSES AND
STARTS USING HEROIN
He REALIZES he needs to get off
heroin so he borrows money from
his mom and goes to a methadone
clinic(277). Eventually the county
lowers his bills and he starts to
piece his life together again. At
his house he has a note with a 5
year plan to make a lot of money
get his license back, live cheaply
and start a savings account(281)

Chapter 24 Summary Part 1:
Arleen and the boys have just moved out of the shelter and
into an apartment (283). ARLEEN has to lie to the landlord,
PANA, and say that she gets $250 in child support each
month, in order to get the apartment (282). JORI is
indifferent when told about the move, but JAFARI cries as he
leaves the shelter because there were toys that he liked and
friendly people there (283).
Chapter 24 Summary Part 2:
A few days after the move, ARLEEN finds out that T is dead
(284). He was killed by his cousin P.A. after an argument
turned violent (284). In the midst of the grieving, PANA
warns ARLEEN about police coming to the apartment, as well
as her babysitter going door-to-door asking for weed, and
says that if any of it continues, she will be forced to
evict ARLEEN (285).
Chapter 24 Summary Part 3:
After Tś funeral, ARLEEN begins to do some work on turning
the apartment into a more suitable home for her and the boys,
and also enrolls them in new schools (287). JORI tries to
adjust to his new school, but he is falling behind in his
classes and not responding to authority well, kicking a
teacher in the shin and running home, chased by police (287).
Because the police showed up, PANA is forced to evict ARLEEN
again, but offers to give back the deposit & the rent (287).
Chapter 24 Summary Part 4:
ARLEEN feels terrible about losing the home she had just
fixed up, and takes her anger out on TRISHA, her sister and
the one who went around asking for weed (288). TRISH tries
to repay ARLEEN by allowing her and the boys to live with
her for $60 a month (288). TRISHA’s boyfriend SUNNY moves
in, and encourages TRISHA to raise ARLEEN’s rent up to $150
(289). SUNNY’s sister and mother move in, and now a
one-bedroom apartment is strained with 8 people living there
(289).
Chapter 24 Summary Part 5:
A Child Protective Services (CPS) worker comes to inspect
JORI and JAFARI'S’ living conditions, and while ARLEEN
convinces her that everything is fine for now,
she is
warned that CPS will be back again (289). ARLEEN secretly
suspects that TRISHA is the one who called CPS (289).
Chapter 24 Summary Part 6:
The chapter picks up in the following spring, where ARLEEN
and the boys have spent the last several days alone in the
apartment, and are surprised to see movers come in (290).
They stay for a little while with ARLEEN’s sister, but she
demands $200 per month (290). While staying there, ARLEEN
loses everything she had in storage, and soon after her
welfare case closes (291). As they move around, their rent
continues to rise, and the next apartment they find take
$600 out of ARLEEN’s $628 monthly paycheck (291).
Chapter 24 Summary Part 7:
ARLEEN starts to find some stability, but her misfortunes
continue as her and the boys are robbed at gunpoint (291).
The apartment’s lights get shit off, and CPS returns and
puts JORI and JAFARI in different homes (291). ARLEEN is
forced to borrow money from her mother to pay the rent, but
the lights come back on and the boys are returned to her
custody (291). They move again, this time to an apartment
with no fridge or stove, but ARLEEN is determined to stay
positive, saying
