She has previously received the Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award at both the state and national level, and also the Keystone award. Dr. Hutcheson is currently the program director for the University of Pittsburgh’s Coordinated Master in Dietetics Program. She has been extremely involved with the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in all of its facets throughout her career. Most recently, she served as the Pittsburgh/Northwest delegate for PAND from 2013-2016. She is a leader in public policy and legislation within the field, especially in regards to licensure and reimbursement for the registered dietitian. Keystone Award: Denice Ferko-Adams, MPH, RDN, LDN Ms. Denice Ferko-Adams, MPH, RDN, LDN is a recipient of the 2017 Keystone Award. Denice currently serves as the President for Wellness Press LLC, where she focuses on worksite wellness. She is highly involved with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at the regional, state and national levels, and she holds the position of director at large for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics at this time. Denice has been considered to be an “exceptional leader” by her peers and she also serves as a mentor to future leaders of the profession. She is recognized nationally as a speaker in the areas of business and nutrition and food related topics. Along with her recent Keystone award, Denice is a recipient of the Academy’s Foundation Medallion Award. Keystone Award: Clancy Cash Harrison, MS, RDN, FAND Ms. Clancy Cash Harrison, MS, RDN, FAND is a recipient of the 2017 Keystone Award. Clancy currently serves in many professional roles, including community nutrition outreach coordinator at Al Beech West Side Food Pantry, adjunct professor at the Pennsylvania State University and recurrent media expert on WNEP-16 ABC Leckey Live Morning Show. She has a passion for replacing misconceptions about food insecurity and fighting childhood hunger. She started a bi-weekly farmers market to bring fresh produce to her food pantry, which ultimately led to her food pantry becoming a place that cultivates dignity. Clancy currently has two blogs, Cooking with Clancy and Fields of Flavor. Her blogs focus on the ability to nourish children on a budget all while teaching them healthy habits. Emerging Dietetic Leader: Erin Pover, MS, RD, LDN Ms. Erin Pover, MS, RD, LDN is the 2017 recipient of the Emerging Dietetic Leader Award. Erin is currently a clinical dietitian at the Jefferson Hospital of the Allegheny Health Network. Erin is involved at the regional, state, and national level of the Academy in various ways, including her current position as President-elect for PittAND. She also serves as a member of the Adult Nutrition Screening Project Group for the Evidence Analysis Library. She is involved in the national and regional affiliates of ASPEN; currently holding the president elect for GPASPEN. She has received numerous certificates of training in the areas of weight management, nutrition counseling, leadership and fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance. Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award – Lehigh Valley: Amy Romberger RD, LDN Ms. Amy Romberger, RD, LDN is the recipient of the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award for the Lehigh Valley region. Amy currently holds full time, per diem and contracted positions and serves as a clinical dietitian for few different organizations. She also serves as the secretary for the LVDA, and is running for the President-elect position for the upcoming year. Additionally, she is serving as an awards co-chair for this year’s PAND AME. Amy completed her dietetic internship at Cedar Crest College in 2015. Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year – Philadelphia: Talene Derbabian, MHA, RD, LDN Ms. Talene Derbabian, MHA, RD, LDN is the 2017 recipient of the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year Award for the Philadelphia district. Talene is currently working as the System Clinical Nutrition Manager at Crozer Keystone Health System. She has been active at the state and regional levels within the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, serving as a nominating committee member for PAND, and holding nominating and membership committee positions within PDA. Talene completed her dietetic internship through Sodexo Health Care Services and also completed her Master’s degree from Saint Joseph’s University. Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year – Pittsburgh: Elizabeth Henry, MS, RDN, LDN Elizabeth Henry, MS, RDN, LDN is the 2017 recipient of the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award for the Pittsburgh district. Elizabeth is the health and nutrition coordinator for the Pittsburgh Public Schools Food Service Department. Elizabeth is an active member of PittsAND, currently serving as the webmaster. Elizabeth completed the Coordinated Master in Nutrition and Dietetics program at the University of Pittsburgh. Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year – Central: Andrea Gamber, RDN, LDN Andrea Gamber, RDN, LDN is the 2017 recipient of the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year award for the Central district. Andrea is currently a clinical dietitian working at Penn State Health St. Joseph. She is the Chair of Professional Development for CPAND, and a member of the PAND media team. Andrea completed her dietetic internship through Sodexo. Outstanding Dietetic Educator – Graduate: Erin O’ Hora, DHSc, RDN, LDN Dr. Erin O’ Hora, DHSc, RDN, LDN is the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award within the graduate category. Erin is an adjunct professor at Marywood University, as well as a pediatric nutrition representative for Nestle Nutrition. Erin is the current president of NEPAND, as well as an education co-chair for nutrition and food science within the Association of Interdisciplinary Doctors of Health Science. Erin helped to transform online classes at Marywood, assisting the current faculty in developing an online MS degree in nutrition and an MS track for Marywood’s distance program. Her students describe her teaching style as “dynamic and engaging.” Outstanding Dietetic Educator – Didactic Program in Dietetics: Stella Volpe, Ph.D, RD, LDN, FACSM Stella Volpe, Ph.D, RD, LDN, FACSM is the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award for the didactic program in dietetics category. Stella is currently the chairperson for the Department of Nutrition Sciences at Drexel University and she is also a professor within the DPD and graduate schools at Drexel. She has been on the nominating committee for the SCAN DPG within the Academy, and she has recently been asked to be the chairperson for SCAN. She is also very involved with the American College of Sports Medicine, previously serving as vice president and on the board of trustees. She has been described as “compassionate” and is known to teach rigorous classes, yet students often rank her classes as the best among students at Drexel. She has been called “an outstanding mentor and an excellent researcher” by her peers. Outstanding Dietetic Student - Dietetic Internship: David Hersh Mr. David Hersh is the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Dietetic Student of the Year Award in the Dietetic internship category. David is currently a student in Cedar Crest College’s Dietetic Internship Program in Allentown, PA. He serves as a student member on the Cedar Crest College Department of Nutrition Advisory council, and was previously the president of the Student Dietetic Association at Cedar Crest College. Outstanding Dietetic Student - Didactic Program in Dietetics: Hannah Goodnight Ms. Hannah Goodnight is the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Dietetic Student of the Year Award in the Didactic Program in Dietetics Category. Hannah is currently a student in the University of Pittsburgh’s DPD Program in Nutrition and Dietetics. Hannah is the vice president of Pitt’s Student Dietetic Association. Hannah also volunteers with the CHS Food Pantry and serves as the Food Science Lab assistant at the University of Pittsburgh. Outstanding Dietetic Student - Coordinated Program: Stacie Smith Ms. Stacie Smith is the 2017 recipient of the Outstanding Dietetic Student of the Year award in the Coordinated Program category. She worked for over 27 years as the Director of Nutrition and Diabetes in a health system in New Jersey where she was responsible for the financial, clinical, quality and regulatory aspects of nutrition for their acute case, long term case, and ambulatory services. In her role, Jane implemented numerous nutrition programs and protocols that involved collaboration between nursing, physicians, and other health care teams. Jane currently is a Clinical Liaison for Abbott Nutrition for the Mid- Atlantic Region. Jane is a registered dietitian with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition, a Master of Science degree in Management and a PhD in Organizational Management with a specialization in Leadership. She is also a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics where she is recognized as a Fellow (FAND). In addition, Dr. Ryan is a Six Sigma Greenbelt and has served on the Board of the New Jersey Dietetic Association in various roles, including President. Jane has spoken at both state and national conferences and has published articles on leadership topics. She resides in Delran, New Jersey with her family. Lucille Beseler, MS, RDN, LDN, CDE, FAND, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics President 2017 Academy Update Lucille Beseler is an entrepreneur, author and professional speaker. In 1991 she established the Family Nutrition Center of South Florida — a comprehensive practice providing in-office consultations, nutrition services to hospitals and other community organizations and corporate and community wellness programs throughout the state of Florida. She is a pioneer in the area of nutrition reimbursement and continues to create innovative models to allow consumers greater access to nutrition services. Beseler also owns Bill It! MNT, a practice and billing solutions company designed for RDNs, which helps corporations, small and large practices create and obtain nutrition reimbursement opportunities. She has spoken at national and state dietetic association meetings and corporate events and is the co-author of Nurturing with Nutrition: Everything You Need to Know about Feeding Infants and Toddlers (Bazarte and Beseler 2003). Beseler has served on the Academy’s Board of Directors, as president of the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and as chairman of the Dietetic Nutrition Practice Council of the Florida State Licensing Board. Beseler is a graduate of Queens College – City University of New York and earned a master’s degree from New York University. Judy Dodd, Judy Dodd is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist. Community based nutrition MS, RDN, LDN, and food education is her specialty. For over forty years she has been FAND teaching campus-based graduate and undergraduate programs at Pitt and online courses at Penn State and Pitt. Community experience includes The Second working with schools introducing nutrition education from pre-school through Century: secondary in a United States Department of Agriculture funded pilot project, Honor the serving as a WIC nutrition education director and as a consultant to the Past. Each of these roles centered on providing the Present. nutrition and food education support to the public as well as to teachers, Shape the school nurses and other health professionals. Most recently she was the food Future. and nutrition advisor to Giant Eagle and their Community Relations Corporate Nutritionist. For over 25 years Judy has written a monthly column for Senior News, a Pittsburgh based magazine for senior adults and has written weekly columns for local newspapers and media consultant. Since 2004 she has been a contributing author to Krause’s Food and the Nutrition Care Process authoring chapters on Community Nutrition and Adult Nutrition. Locally and nationally, she has a track record as a speaker to professional and lay groups on topics related to dietetics and nutrition and to introducing food choices to children. Active in the profession of dietetics and in the community, Judy has held numerous volunteer positions, most notably serving as President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Chairman of their Foundation. She is currently co-chairman of the Second Century Initiative of AND. Locally she is an advisor to Action for Healthy Kids, Let's Move Pittsburgh, Schweitzer Fellowship and a board member of Adagio Health. Cynthia is the owner of Cynthia Burke and Associates for the past 30 years, the premier nutrition service for Individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in Western Pennsylvania. Her business provides a range of nutrition services to individuals, family, and staff as well as working closely with interdisciplinary health care members and encouraging climate change. She routinely does presentations on nutrition issues associated with the Intellectual and Developmental Disability field. Cindy has served the dietetic profession during her career in the key positions of President of the Pittsburgh Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation as well as serving in the House of Delegates as a PA Delegate and currently the Behavioral Health DPG. Additionally, Cindy is a mentor to colleagues as well as students on professional and practice matters. She received her BS in Nutrition from the Pennsylvania State University and a MS in Food and Nutrition from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has previously worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and Temple University Hospital. She was an adjunct professor at Immaculata University from 2005 until 2016 and is currently an adjunct professor at West Chester University. Her passions are nutrition support, physician nutrition education, and promotion of RDs practicing to the maximum capacity of their license. Dr. William Woys Weaver is an internationally known food ethnographer who received his PhD at University College, Dublin, Ireland, and the first person from that University to receive a degree in food ethnography: the study of food as culture. The author of 17 books and recipient of four Julia Child/IACP cookbook awards, as well as numerous other publishing awards, Dr. Weaver has served as Contributing Editor to Gourmet, adjunct professor of food studies at both University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University, and has been featured in many food and seed documentaries. He as appeared on Good Morning America, Fresh Air, and numerous other well-known programs. He maintains the Roughwood Seed Collection at historic Roughwood in Devon, PA under the oversight of the non-profit Roughwood Seed Archive. He is director of the Keystone Center for the Study of Food Tourism, a sister organization of the Roughwood Seed Archive. He has two books under contract for publication in the fall of 2018: Creative Pickling, a book focusing on techniques for preserving heirloom vegetables, an outgrowth of the home gardening movement; and a new edition of his award winning book Heirloom Vegetable Gardening. Both titles will be published by Rizzoli of New York. Judy Thalheimer, RD, LDN Judith Thalheimer is a freelance nutrition writer and community educator whose passion is translating complex research into simple, understandable language. In addition to writing regularly on a wide variety of topics for national publications such as Today’s Dietitian magazine and Environmental Dietary Nutrition, Judy has extensive experience as an educator and public speaker Pattern: The both in her role as a nutrition educator and in her previous position in the New field of Public Health. Opportunities Jenn Sporay, Jennifer Sporay has been a registered dietitian for twenty years. Zach Breeding, MS, RDN, LDN Zach Breeding is the clinical dietitian of the multidisciplinary practice and adult cystic fibrosis center at Drexel Medicine and the owner of a personalized nutrition consultation and off-site catering company, The-Sage: Nutritious Solutions. He holds an undergraduate degree in Culinary Arts and Recipe a Master’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition form NYU. Patel, MD, MBA, MS Behavioral Economics and Health Mitesh S. Patel is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Health Care Management at the Perelman School of Medicine and The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and is the Director of the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit. He is a Primary Care Physician at the Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia and is on faculty at the Penn Medicine Center for Health Care Innovation and the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics. His research focuses on studying innovative ways to change health behaviors and improve health outcomes by combining digital health approaches that collect data using wireless and wearable devices with engagement strategies that leverage insights from behavioral economics. He has led more than 10 clinical trials that evaluated financial and social incentive designs within hospitals and in partnership with insurers, employers, and community organizations. As Director of the Penn Medicine Nudge Unit, he leads an initiative within the health care system to systematically test ways to apply insights from behavioral science to choice environments to improve health care value and outcomes. He is the CoDirector of the E-Health course for Wharton MBA students and the Health Care Systems course for Penn medical students. Dr. Patel has received a Career Development Award from the Department of Veterans Affairs and a Clinical Scientist Development Award from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Deanna SegraveDaly, RDN, LDN Dr. Donald Layman is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Food Science & Human Nutrition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Layman served on the faculty at the University of Illinois from 1977 – 2011. Dr. Layman has been a leader in research about protein and amino acid metabolism, nutrition for athletic performance, obesity, diabetes and cardiometabolic health. Dr. Layman has over 100 peer-reviewed publications. He has received numerous awards for his research and nutrition teaching. Dr. Layman served as Associate Editor of The Journal of Nutrition from 1989 through 1993; and he currently serves Associate Editor of the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior and on the editorial boards of Nutrition & Metabolism, Journal of the American College of Nutrition, and Nutrition Research and Practice and is a consultant to numerous food companies and commodity organizations. Dr. Layman earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry at Illinois State University and his doctorate in human nutrition at the University of Minnesota. Julie Stefanski is the owner of Stefanski Nutrition Services in York, PA and is a reviewing editor and writer for Nutrition Dimension, a division of On Course Learning one of the largest providers of CEU courses for healthcare professionals. As Registered Dietitian Nutritionist for Leg Up Farm, a unique facility for special needs children in Mt. Katelyn Quick, MS, RDN, LDN, RYT-200 Kate Quick is an affable spirit with a passion for wellness, food, and the outdoors! She has nearly 30 years of experience as a clinician, researcher, and educator and holds degrees from Rutgers University(DCN, Doctor of Clinical Nutrition), Virginia Tech (MS, Nutrition and Food Science), Southern Illinois University (BS, Nutrition and Food Science). Along with her research and teaching she has held a variety of clinical positions ranging from in-patient, private practice, and community diabetes education outreach. Her research interests include presentations and publications in the areas of the prevention and management of diabetes, applications of technology in chronic disease management, and the medical home model. She is a Registered DietitianNutritionist, Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (PA) and Fellow of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is currently Assistant Professor and Interum Director of the Master of Health Science Program in the Department of Nutrition at Cedar Crest College. Previously, she held several positions with the Nutrition Program at La Salle University including Assistant Professor, Didactic Program Director, Founding Coordinated Program Director, and Associate Chair of the Department of Urban Public Health and Nutrition. Her specialty area of practice is pediatric nutrition, having worked in research, clinical care, and management as a Pediatric Dietitian-Nutritionist at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia prior to college teaching. She is an active leader in local and state professional organizations including currently as State Policy Representative for The Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and Past-President and Program Committee member for the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Society for Nutrition Education. Carrie Hillman brings nearly a decade of government experience to Milliron Goodman. Her experience has come during a period of great transition within the General Assembly and she has a working history with the current members of the General Assembly. Carrie holds a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with an emphasis in Public Relations from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. At the beginning of her career, Carrie was an intern with then Speaker of the House, Dennis M. O’Brien, where she assisted with special projects, press releases, special events, and foreign delegation visits. Upon her college graduation, Carrie was offered a position as a legislative assistant to Representative Dan Deasy in the House Democratic Caucus where she managed constituent services as well as the Representative’s schedule. Carrie has served as both the communications and government relations director for the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF). During her time there, Carrie advocated on behalf of APSCUF members to promote public higher education and workers’ rights, managed the political action committee, and executed the annual lobby day. She also built and maintained excellent relationships with lawmakers that were sustained through APSCUF’s grassroots advocacy. Liesje Nieman Liesje Nieman Carney received her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Nutrition Carney RD, from The Pennsylvania State University. She completed her dietetic internship CSP, LDN at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. With 17 years of clinical experience, Liesje has experience with a broad range of patients. Liesje specializes in pediatric nutrition support, pediatric malnutrition and neonatal Pediatric Malnutrition: intensive care. She is an accomplished author, speaker and consultant. New Liesje has held numerous leadership positions. She is on the Editorial Review Board of Topics in Clinical Nutrition journal and is the Past Publications Chair Diagnostic of the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group.
