Customary Measures of Length
Display a foot ruler and a yardstick. We use these tools to measure
customary units of length. We measure inches and feet with the
shorter ruler. Point out each measure on the ruler. We measure yards
with this longer ruler known as a yardstick. A customary unit used
to measure long distances is the mile.

Have students discuss the sorts of things they would measure in inches, in feet, in yards,
and in miles. Would you use inches, feet, or miles to measure the length of our
room? Explain.

Students might say:
“I would use feet. Inches are too small, and miles are too long.”

Give each student an inch ruler. Sometimes we want to measure something
that is shorter than 1 inch long. The mark halfway between 0 and 1 is _21 inch.
The mark halfway between 0 and _21 is _41 inch. Show me where _43 inch is on the
ruler. Then have students locate marks on the ruler for 1_21 inches, 2_41 inches, 5_43 inches,
and so on. Then have them draw and measure line segments of those lengths.

Sometimes we have to measure something that does not “exactly” line up with
one of the marks on our ruler. Show students how to measure the length of such line
segments to the nearest _21 inch by estimating to which _21-inch mark the measurement is
closer. Repeat for measuring to the nearest _41 inch. When students measure, be sure
they align one end of the line segment with the 0 mark on the ruler.
PR AC TICE
In the Activity 8 Master, students choose appropriate customary measures of length
and measure to the nearest _12 and _14 inch.
DIFFERENTIATION : Suppor ting the Range of Learner s
Challenge students to convert units of length with exercises prepared
as follows:
