Messenger
Principal’s Message
Dear Manatee Bay Families,
Welcome to the month of November, the perfect month for truly counting our blessings.
Last month PTA launched our major fundraiser “Boosterthon” and earned $24,000 for
the school. Although our goal was $40,000, we are truly grateful for your support. It
was AWESOME seeing everyone out for the Manatee Marathon Fun Run. What a special time for students and families to gather to celebrate. Celebrating together is always
the BEST!!
Parents of 3 – 5 graders please be advised that the long awaited FSA scores are in. You
should be receiving a parent friendly guide from the District on your scores and how to
interpret them. Overall Manatee Bay did very well alongside of our Weston Schools.
Kudos to our brilliant teachers, incredible students and supportive parents.
We are pleased and proud to announce this year’s Teacher of the Year Kaitlyn Marshall
(Third grade teacher) and Employee of the Year David Rios Santos (Head Custodian).
Kaitlyn has been with Manatee Bay for 12 years and makes a difference everyday with
the amount of planning, creativity and love she puts into her lessons. She always has
the most professional and caring attitude and is quick to go the extra mile to do whatever it takes to reach and teach EVERY student!
David is always there when we need him. He maintains the most humble and helpful
attitude and goes out of his way to help EVERYONE. No matter what serious work he is
involved in, David always responds to staff in the most timely, professional and speedy
way. His work is neat, done with love and on TIME!!!
Please join me in in congratulating them!
Speaking of counting blessings. I can’t thank you enough for sharing your children with
us – the best part of our day!!! Please take some time to show those that matter the
most to YOU some special gratitude and quality time! Those little things go a SUPER
long way!!!
HAVE A GREAT MONTH!!!

y a TIEMPO!
CAMINO!
¡QUE TENGAN UN MES MARAVILLOSO!

Statement
October has been an exciting month in Kindergarten! We had a very
successful Boosterthon Fun Run! Thank you so much for coming out
to support our little runners and school! We also had a terrific time
preparing for our Fall Festival and Storybook Character Parade. This
month, we learned about apples, Columbus, and fire safety. If you
haven’t come up with a fire safety plan for home, now would be a
great time to work on one with your child.

Americans and Pilgrims. We are very excited about our upcoming
field trip to the Museum of Discovery & Science!
Please remember to sign your child’s agenda each night and to
empty his or her Take Home Folder. Finally, don’t forget to read to
your child, too!

Evaluation Input
School Advisory Council
We held our monthly School Advisory Council (SAC) meeting on October 13 in the
media center. The SAC committee voted on new committee members and discussed the Accreditation process and the results from the Accreditation survey.
Each meeting we will be focusing on a different standard to get a clear understanding of the Accreditation process. We began our discussion with Standard 1:
Purpose and Direction-The system maintains and communicates at all levels of the
organization a purpose and direction for continuous improvement that commit to
high expectations for learning as well as shared values and beliefs about teaching
and learning. This standard also has four indicators that break down the standard.
Our next SAC meeting will be Tuesday, November 10th at 2:15 pm in the media
center. We hope that you will consider joining us.
Per state statute, parents have
the right to be provided input
into the annual performance
assessment of their child’s
teachers and administrators. To
provide such input regarding
any Manatee Bay employee,

First Grade
First Grade is working hard and learning lots! Please help students by practicing sight
words, counting backwards, and logging them in to iready lessons online. Our 1st Grade
goal for an AR shirt this year will be 15 points, about 30 books if each book is worth .5
points. Please visit the Public Library and the Book Fair in November to select books for
your child.
Our second field trip will be to Bailey Hall at BCC to see a ballet and
Tree Tops County Park afterward for lunch and play.
Remember to be thankful for all we have and support each other
with kindness and consideration.
Dual Language Program
Dual Language Program students from Mrs. Rosas’, Mrs. Malpica’s, Mrs. Garcia-Escoto’s and Ms. Kaufmann’s classes
reading in English and Spanish to their Book Buddies.
Reading Nook
Jumpstart’s premiere national campaign Read for the Record is one day of the year when millions of individuals come together to celebrate literacy and support Jumpstart in its efforts to promote early childhood
education. On October 22, people across the nation came together to read the children’s book "Not
Norman: A Goldfish Story," by Kelly Bennet, in support of
Jumpstart’s mission to work towards the day that every child in
America enters school prepared to succeed. Through a partnership between the Broward Children's Services Council, Broward
County Public Schools, and multiple Broward Stakeholders,
books were being provided to all participating PreK and Kindergarten. Manatee Bay was fortunate to
have a variety of guest speakers. Check

STUDENT COUNCIL
Congratulations to all of the representatives for their work hard during the Student Council election process. The
following representatives were elected as our officers. Jackson Grier: President; Sofia Gonzalez: Vice President,
Ivan Schmid: Secretary; Haven Hepworth: Treasurer.
This time of year is very busy for Student Council. We are preparing for the annual Book Drive, Harvest Drive, and
Toy Drive. The Book Drive is from 10/26-11/10. There will be collection boxes outside of the library. Please donate any new or slightly used books to support Croissant Park Elementary.
This year Manatee Bay is sponsoring Croissant Park Elementary and Westwood Heights Elementary for our annual
Harvest Drive.
For the families at Croissant Park Elementary we will be collecting gift cards in increments of $5-$25. A lot of
these families do not have the means to cook meals due to their housing situations so these gift cards will be for
them to purchase meals for their families. Gift cards can be from Publix, Winn Dixie, Walmart, or Target.
Help support our efforts with feeding families in need at Westwood Heights Elementary this Thanksgiving by purchasing any non-perishable items listed below. Please bring in the items that are listed for your child’s grade level.
Only non-perishable items, (no glass) and check the expiration dates.
PreK/Kindergarten: juice (any flavor), canned gravy, canned soup, canned sweet potatoes, jelly/jam, aluminum foil
1st/2nd: Cereal/Oatmeal, cookies/snacks, peanut butter, napkins, canned fruit, soap or body wash
3rd/4th: stuffing, canned meat or tuna, shampoo, dish soap, toothpaste, syrup, laundry detergent
5th: canned vegetables, canned cranberries, pancake mix, pasta or rice, canned spaghetti sauce
The collection boxes will be located in the main hallway. Please leave all non-perishable items in any labeled collection box from 11/2-11/13. If you would like to donate a gift card, please send it to the PTA office in an envelope
labeled “gift card/harvest drive.”
Thank you for any support you can provide to make those less fortunate
have an enjoyable holiday season.

Accelerated Reader is very important to
your child’s reading development. Help
your child soar to AR success by encouraging them to take AR tests on their
library books or any book they may be
reading for pleasure. Parents can go to
www.arbookfinder.com to check the AR
level of any book.
Second Grade is off to a great start!
Now that we have completed our first

our number one concern.
Wonderful Families of 3rd Graders - October was a busy month practicing our multiplication tables. Please continue to encourage and help
your children learn their facts at a rapid response rate. It will be so
helpful for them and allow them to learn division very easily. We are
addressing many reading standards so please continue to monitor your
children to ensure that they are reading and taking their AR quizzes to
enhance their reading education. The Boosterthon was a success and
we thank you for coming out and supporting your children and our
school.
The Bay Café opens at 7:15am
for students who are having
breakfast at school. All other
students may wait in the lobby

Engineering for Kids allowed the kids to practice the design method for
engineering and launch a straw rocket. They thoroughly enjoyed their
experience! We had a great week celebrating drug awareness and
keeping our bodies healthy, not to mention a focus on colleges and
thinking about our futures with so many great schools to choose from.
Thank you parents for all you do to help us teach your children.
ESE Corner
This month the InD cluster classes will have their annual Thanksgiving Feast! We look
forward to learning about pilgrims, Native Americans, and reasons we are thankful. Last year we had a HUGE turnout! We can't wait to try new foods and spend time
with family and friends!
Please join us in congratulating Marly Mager on her nomination for the JUST DO
IT.......I DID award. We're very proud of our little super hero!
DYSLEXIA. is defined as a variable often familial learning disability involving difficulties
in acquiring and processing language that is typically manifested by a lack of proficiency in reading, spelling, and writing.
Daymond John, investor and founder of FUBU clothing line as well as entrepreneur on
TV's popular "Shark Tank" had dyslexia all of his life, but was diagnosed only about a
decade ago. His mother remembers his struggles with reading and writing while in
school and she shared some tips for how she handled his frustrations. Daymond's
mother often had puzzles in the home for Daymond and her to work on together. This
helped with his ability to concentrate as well as gave them both time to spend together
and talk. Knowing that Daymond read aloud better, she would have him read newspapers to her while she was cooking. She would make him think that this was a way for
her to keep up with the currents news. Although he would get frustrated, she never
made him feel bad for his problem with reading. She knew he was not lazy and she
made him feel accepted and challenged him to keep trying. Daymond's mother always
kept a balance between his weaknesses and his strengths. Daymond sees his dyslexia
as an asset, it helped shape the successful businessman that he is today.
The following games are excellent to help your child develop language and can be
played anytime/anywhere (in the car, waiting in line, at the ball field, etc.) You can adjust the games based on your child's age/ability.
Tell me a toy that starts with "b".
Tell me food that starts with all the letters of the alphabet.
Tell me the opposite of _____ .
Tell me some things that have: legs, spots, wings, tentacles, etc.
Tell me some things that are: slippery, tall, wide, perpendicular, etc.
What do you use for: eating, sleeping, playing basketball, etc.
What is a land form (science word, math word, etc.) that starts with the letter ___ ?
What are the kinds of frozen precipitation? (rain, sleet, and hail).
Tell me how words are the same and different.
Remember to be creative and have FUN!!!!
4th Grade
5th Grade
Now that October is behind us, fourth graders are getting
very excited for our two upcoming Florida related field
trips. We can not wait to slog through the slough and
ride airboats in the Everglades as we explore this ecosystem which is unique to Florida. Then, just a few short
weeks later, we will board the busses to St. Augustine,
the oldest continuously settled European city in the continental United States. While there, students will experience life as the early Florida settlers did (well almost).
The fifth grade students work very hard this
quarter making the transition from 4th grade
to 5th grade. As we start the second quarter
the students will be working on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals in
Math and learning about the weather system
in Science. They continue to learn about and
practice non fiction writing by synthesizing
two or more articles on a similar subject. This
also ties in to Reading as the students continue to learn about text structure. Learning all
about the geography of our great nation
rounds out the Social Studies curriculum.
Academically, we are moving towards our goals. Students are working on multi-digit multiplication and moving into division. Please do not try to teach them the
methods you used growing up. We will get to the regular
algorithms, but we have several tricks up our sleeves to
share with the children first! In science, we will begin
exploring space with an emphasis on Earth's location in
space and how it affects seasons, day and night. We will
also explore the phases of the moon. Speaking of exploring, we are going to be learning about the European explorers that found themselves in Florida! All of this is
going on, while at the same time, students are applying
the skills and strategies they are learning in Reading and
Language Arts.

Spotlight on Specials! Library Media Center
The Library Media Center is a very busy place. All students
have had the opportunity to check out books.
The 4th and 5th grade students have learned about logging in
to their library accounts so that they can see books they have
checked out, check out ebooks, create virtual lists and make
book recommendations.
The 3rd grade students are learning how to use the online
catalog to find books of interest and in their AR levels.
The Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade students are learning
about the Florida Reading Association’s nominated books
and voting for their favorite one.
Remember that the more you read, the more
you know!
Volunteer Procedures
Keeping students safe is a priority. The STAR System (Security Tracking
And Response) continues to be used at all schools. The STAR System
provides schools with high-speed security checks against local, state
and national sex offender databases and against state and local law
enforcement files. When parents, visitors, and volunteers come to
school, the office staff will swipe their driver ’s license into a bar code
reader, verify the name, take a photo and print a badge with this picture. All visitors are asked to check out in the office when leaving
school.
Volunteers must complete the on-line volunteer/ mentor application
before helping in school. Go to www.browardschools.com/getinvolved
to complete the online application. The first time volunteers come to
assist, the front office staff will ask for their social security number and
driver’s license to print their Volunteer Badge. Only approved volunteers are allowed to assist in the classroom. If you do not have access
to a computer or you need assistance, please contact the school.
