SMOKE from a diesel generator room at Lulu Hypermarket in
Gharaffah almost caused pandemonium on Thursday as customers
mistook it for a fire outbreak.
Noticing the smoke, the wary customers informed the Civil Defence
department, which drafted fire fighters to the spot immediately.
Lulu Gharaffah Outlet Manager Basheer said, “The diesel generator
pumped out the smoke when it activated due to fluctuations in power
supply. The generator, which is fixed close to the firefighting pump
house, will automatically activate even with minor fluctuation in power
supply. Our customers mistook the smoke for fire outbreak. Lulu has
highly-equipped fire prevention system.”
In its website, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) described the incident
as a ‘minor fire’ at Lulu Hypermarket. (SC)
their cooperation during the exercise, stressing that the Civil Defence
would continue its awareness campaign among students.
Prior to the mock drills, safety officers visited the school and inspected
safety equipment, fire extinguishing
systems and other security materials.
The drills included an explanation
on various types of fire extinguishers
and practical training on how to use
them and other safety equipment.

The sentenced men were

QATAR University (QU) hosted a group of 10 Dutch media
students in an exchange programme aimed at promoting
cultural
understanding
between the Arab World and
Western countries.
The students, who have
been in Qatar for about a
week, have visited various
universities in Qatar, museums, Souq Waqif, mosques
and other cultural heritage
sites. They have also attended
different forums and interacted with Qatari students.
During a media forum at
Qatar
University
on
Thursday, the student presented the video shots they
produced
in
Qatar.
Participants at the event discussed various issues, including misconception between
the Arab world and other
parts of the globe, Islam and
freedom of expression.
Qatar University media students had also visited
Holland where they were
involved in similar activities
earlier this year.
Talking to Qatar Tribune,
QU Mass Communication
Associate
Professor
Noureddine Miladi said the
programme would be useful
to the students as people
understand one another better through interactions.
“The programme is aimed
at increasing cultural understanding between the Arab
world and Western countries.
We feel that there are cultural
and religious misconceptions
among people. We believe
that this kind of programme
can be used to connect people,” he said.
Miladi said that Qatari
students’
visit
the
Netherlands was an eyeopener for them about the
Dutch culture and people.
“Qatari students spent two
weeks in the Netherlands and
learnt about Western culture.
They made presentations
about how they think about
themselves and other people.
The Dutch students have also
given us a feedback and they
have learnt a lot during the
time they have spent in
Qatar,” he said, adding that
the institution was planning
to expand the programme by
involving more students.
Commenting on the programme, the initiator of
Dutch-Qatari exchange programme, Khalil Aitblal said
the programme, which started about three years ago, has
become a good platform of
exchanging expertise and cultural ideas.
Associate Professor of Mass Communication at Qatar University Noureddine Miladi addresses Qatari
and Dutch students during a media forum, in Doha, on Thursday. (JALAL PATHIYOOR)
He said, during a visit to Al
Jazeera channels, the Dutch
students learnt about how to
protect journalism ethics and
the organisation’s philosophy.
According to him, the stu-
dents will represent the video
at their university and post on
the You-Tube. They will also
have an opportunity to put
the videos on the university
website to receive comments
from viewers.
Aitblal said the institution
was planning another meeting in January 2013, where
Qatari, Chinese, Dutch and
American students will con-
verge for 10 days to learn
from one another.
Susanne Jekel, a Journalism
student
from
Utrecht
University of Applied Sciences,
the Netherlands, said: “Our
visits to places like Al Jazeera,
Qatar News Agency and
mosque have made me understand some aspects of Qatari
culture. The visits have
changed my perception of the
Arab world to a positive one. I
interacted with Qatari students
and learnt many things about
their culture, including their
way of dressing.”
Maha al Kharraz, a mass
communication student at
Qatar University said the student exchange programme
said, “When we went to the
Netherlands, we interacted
with people and learnt how to
communicate and deal with
people regardless of their cultural background or religion.”

Qatar Airways CEO urges runway
expansion at Heathrow airport
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
QATAR Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar al Baker has
called on the British government to urgently address capacity constraints at London
Heathrow to avoid a ‘catastrophic situation’ for the
country’s economy.
Baker was vocal in support
for a third runway at the
world’s busiest international
airport to remain competitive
with rival European airport
hubs. The government recently began a review to address
the critical airport issues in
south east England in the face
of growing competition from
airports in Paris, Frankfurt
and Amsterdam.
Baker was speaking during a keynote address to a
distinguished gathering of
more than 250 global aviation industry professionals
and media at the Aviation
Club in London.
Speaking on the occasion,
Baker said the third runway
debate “was not an option,

but a necessity” to overcome
the capacity crunch Britain’s
premier airport was currently facing. “Heathrow is
bursting at the seams and
has already reached a critical point,” he said.
“Already heading towards a
double dip recession, the UK
cannot afford to lose out on the
huge benefits a third runway
would bring to the economy in
south east England and the
country as a whole through the

creation of more jobs and
more business opportunities.”
“No capacity increase will
inevitably lead to further economic hardship with job losses and businesses closing
down. Heathrow is already
losing out to European neighbouring hubs that have the
resource to expand capacity.
Measures to expand need to
be taken soon to avoid a catastrophic situation in the
future. The UK government
cannot afford to immerse
itself in long winded debate
and public enquiries. Action
needs to be taken,” he added.
Baker stressed that it would
be a grave mistake if no immediate investment was made in
an industry that continues to
experience demand outstripping supply. “While the proposed idea of a new airport
‘Boris Island’ in Kent is a good
idea, this is a project that will
potentially take at least 20
years to materialise if the goahead is given today. Can the
UK wait for 20 years? During
this period, we will see airports
expand significantly across the
continent — and of course in
my region,” he said.
He said that bilateral constraints compounded the
problem of ineffective competition. “Not just in the UK, but
governments around the
world need to wake up to reality of doing business today. Air
corridors should be opened up
to give passengers more
choice,” he pointed out.
“Qatar Airways has managed to steadily increase frequency to five daily flights
between Heathrow and our
Doha hub, but we believe there
is demand for further expansion on the route. As we prepare to move to a brand new
airport in Doha next year, the
opportunities that will present
themselves are enormous. But
to really take full advantage of
our new home, we need more
services from places like
London to cater to the
demand,” he added.

A SEMINAR on legal protection to prevent the infringement of religions — the challenges and solutions — was organised by the Centre of Legal and
Judicial Studies at the Ministry
of Justice on Thursday.
Minister of Justice HE
Hasan bin Abdullah al Ghanem said that the seminar was
held within the framework of
activity of the Centre of Legal
and Judicial Studies at the
Ministry of Justice.
Its main objective was to
seek the issuance of a legislative instrument to prevent
infringement of religions, especially after the abuse and
infringement of religions in
general and Islam in particular.
“We took an initiative to
issue a legislative instrument,
which we aim to be international and to be presented to
global organisations and the
United Nations — to prevent
the infringement of religions,”
Ghanem said, adding, “This
will be under the name, ‘Qatar
model law on the prevention of
infringement on religions’.”
He said the role of the
Ministry of Justice was important as it will discuss the issue
at the level of GCC Ministers of
Justice and will also forward it
to the next conference of Arab
Justice Ministers, slated to be
held in Cairo, in November.
“We will adopt this legislative instrument to take it to the
United Nations, with the aim of
preventing anyone to infringe
any religion. It will be translated into many languages,”
Ghanem said, adding that the
Ministry of Justice will work
with the World Federation of
Muslim Scholars in this regard.

weren’t discussing their
Theory of Knowledge class
which Gammon also teaches
and the students need to pass
in order to receive their
International Baccalaureate
Diploma Programme certificate. The presentation is
aimed to prepare the students
for life after they have received
that coveted diploma and
moved on to university.
“This is an idea that came up
a couple of years ago when we
were discussing how we could
best use advisory time for
diploma students,” said Grade
12 manager Claire Coull. “The
advisory teachers and I
thought it was important that
our students had some insight
and preparation for their university years when they are
going to have to be more
responsible for looking after
themselves.”
The result is a series of life
skills sessions scheduled over
the next few weeks. The presentations are informal, but
hands on and practical with
the teachers themselves holding demonstrations for the
benefit of their students.
Included in the menu for
Qatar Academy official at a presentation programme, in Doha, recently.
cooking session with Gammon
was rice cooked in a beaker
and pasta sauce made from
the simplest ingredient,
canned tomatoes.
“I’ve met people in university who can’t cook for themselves because they can’t open
a can even though its canned
ingredients are cheaper and
easier to use,” Gammon said.
Gammon’s light approach to
the demonstration will help
him to send across a message.
Qatar University launches
programme for pharmacists
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
QATAR University College of
Pharmacy (CPH) recently
launched its Continuing
Professional Pharmacy Development (CPPD) programme
2012-2013, drawing over 40
faculty members and practicing Qatar pharmacists.
The purpose of the event
was to advance communication between the college faculty
and the pharmacists who work in various hospitals, clinics
and centres in the country.
It was also an opportunity
to update pharmacists on
information about the continuing professional development programmes provided
by the college as well as QU’s
Continuing Education Office
15
to advance skills and competencies towards provision of
quality patient care.
CPH Acting Dean Dr Sherief Khalifa and programme
coordinator Dr Nadir Kheir
welcomed the participants.
Khalifa stressed the significance of life-long-learning in
the practice of pharmacy.
“The strength of the CPPD
programme lies in its relevance to the development of
pharmacists in Qatar,”
Khalifa said, adding, “These
training sessions were an
invaluable opportunity for
both parties to discuss a number of aspects related to the
profession as well as to share
their individual experiences.
The college is pleased to provide this outlet and to partner
with Continuing Education
Office in providing inter-connected courses that will impact strongly on the personal
and professional development of Qatar’s pharmacists.”
Kheir presented the list of
future topics and activities
planned for the 2012-2013
period which will range from
the role of pharmacists in
health promotion, to geriatric
pharmacy, evidence-based
medicine and writing a pharmacy care plan.
Continuing
Education
coordinator Lijy Jose introduced attendees to the QUictQatar partnership online
continuing education programme that incorporates courses covering various topics
including management, communication skills and personal development strategies.
“My point is that none of this is
difficult and you can easily do
this for yourself,” he said.
It’s the same message that
David McIlroy tried to convey
to his group which tried out
ironing. After watching a couple of videos online, the students tried their hand in ironing clothes before a friendly
contest took place to see who
can effectively iron out all the
wrinkles from the sample uniform. To make sure they
retain the ‘lesson’, the students did a step by step guide
which will be available on the
school’s Moodle platform,
according to McIlroy.
“The life skills will include
cooking, doing laundry, ironing, changing a car tyre, doing
a jump start and oil check and
banking skills. It is essentially
giving the students a chance
to have a go at these skills as
well as having some fun,”
Coull said.
COLLEGE of the North
Atlantic Qatar (CNAQ) will
host a ‘10th birthday’ event on
Saturday to celebrate the college’s ‘Decade of Excellence’.
The event — essentially a
‘Family Day’ — will take place
at the Museum of Islamic Art
Park from 10am to 5pm.
CNAQ has planned a full
day of festivities for the entire
family. Children will enjoy
balloons and a ‘bouncy castle’,
along with face-painting and
henna activities.
The CNAQ community and
some residents are expected
to attend the entertainment
and fun event, with everyone
encouraged to bring friends
and their family members.
The ‘Family Day’ will present
an opportunity to learn more
about the college’s technical
programmes.
“Family Day is our way of
including the entire Qatar
community in our celebration
of CNAQ’s ‘Decade of
Excellence,’” said Dr Ken
MacLeod, president of CNAQ.
“This is a special day where our
talented faculty and staff, our
students and their families, our
business partners, who are
generous with their time and
expertise, and the wider community which has embraced
our mission of creating a
skilled workforce and future
leaders for Qatar, can all come
together to celebrate our 10year journey to becoming
Qatar’s premier technical college,” MacLeod added.
A CNAQ stage in the centre
of the plush, green lawns of the
Museum of Islamic Art Park
will feature student perform-
ances throughout the day —
everything from cultural
dances to hip hop and solo performances. A DJ will add to the
music mix by playing tunes
from a number of eras and cultures to appeal to all ages.
One of the highlights of
CNAQ ‘Family Day’ will be the
10th Anniversary birthday
cake, one of the largest ever
seen in Doha.
Throughout the day, guests
will have an opportunity to
enjoy picnic fare such as hotdogs, nachos, sandwiches,
assorted salads, French fries,
BBQ, shawarma, popcorn,
and other tasty snacks, served
at a food court.
Driven by the country’s
strategic education goals,
CNAQ was founded in 2002
with the vision of becoming a
premier technical college. Ten
years later, CNAQ is playing a
significant role in the country’s ongoing efforts to realise
the Qatar National Vision
2030 and along with it, the
goals of the National
Development Strategy.
The ‘Family Day’ is the second of six 10th anniversary
events promising a year full of
CNAQ festivities. From April 57, 2013, the CNAQ will host
‘Global Innovators 2013:
Leading and learning in technical and vocational education’.
This international conference
will be held at Qatar National
Convention Centre.
This winter will also see a
charity event involving students in raising funds to benefit a local charity, as well as a
skills competition, both of
which will be held on-campus. Festivities will conclude
with a 10th anniversary gala
event in May.
TII STUDENT ORIENTATION

Spanish National Day celebrated with photo expo
CATHERINE W GICHUKI
DOHA
SEVERAL dignitaries and members of the Spanish community
attended a programme at Ritz
Carlton Hotel on Wednesday to celebrate the country’s National Day.
Minister of Public Health HE
Abdullah bin Khalid al Qahtani and
Spanish Ambassador to Qatar HE
Amador Martinez jointly cut a cake
to mark the occasion.
Besides the celebrations, around
36 architectural photographs from
a collection themed, ‘From
Qurtuba to Cordoba’, featuring
buildings from the city of Cordoba
were also on display.
The Spanish city of Cordoba, a
world heritage site, is known for its
Muslim past.
According to an embassy official,
the display of photographs was a
preview of the exhibition scheduled to be held next year. It will be
held in collaboration with the Spanish embassy in Doha and Casa
Arabe, an institution in Spain.
Speaking on the occasion, the
envoy said, “Since my arrival in
Qatar a few months ago, I have
always said that this post was a
challenge for me.
“Not because it’s something new
in my diplomatic career, but
rather the opposite, for giving me
an opportunity to do my diplomatic work as an ambassador in a
country with which Spain shares
objectives, share projects, in a
wide range of prospects for
cooperation between the two
countries.”
She further said, “We have a
common cultural link. Over the years, Spain has been a crossroad for
people and culture.
“The sample of the exhibition
titled, ‘From Qurtuba to Córdoba’
will make you appreciate outstanding examples of Arab architecture in Spain through evolution
and history of the city of Cordoba.
It is one of the most beautiful
Spanish cities and a world heritage
site. However, this cultural link is
not the only one that unites us,
Minister of Public Health HE Abdullah bin Khalid al Qahtani and Spanish Ambassador to Qatar HE Amador Martinez
with other dignitaries at a cake cutting ceremony, in Doha, on Wednesday. (HANSON K JOSEPH)
there are many more.”
She added that bilateral relations
between Qatar and Spain have continued to strengthen, especially
since the opening of the Spanish
embassy in Qatar.
“Spain and Qatar have found a
new common ground to continue
working together. Since the opening of the embassy, the relations
between the countries have grown
through exchanges of high level
visits. In this context, Spain was
the first European country to buy
liquid gas from Qatar, in 1997,”
she said.
She said that there was an
increase in the number of Spanish
companies that were established
permanently in the country and the
constant increase of the Spanish
people who have shifted to live and
work in Qatar.
The envoy lauded the country’s
leadership and stated that Qatar
has become a relevant player as a
leader in development and innovation that is embodied in its
Qatar National Vision 2030.
