Each student senator serves a two-year term and is selected through an application process within each state. Together, the GLATA Student Senate is responsible for designing and implementing the student session of the Annual Winter Meeting and Symposium. Each year we strive to create a program that both interests and educates the students within District IV. In addition to organizing the student session, the GLATA Student Senate makes efforts to inform all students of current events and pertinent information regarding the Athletic Training profession. The GLATA Student Senate also represents the students within the district through communication with the GLATA Executive Board. Some of our goals this year as the Student Senate include: Promote the profession through education on legislative issues including the promotion of the NPI number. Continue establishing better communication with students and ATEPs within District IV. Continue to implement current and relevant topics into the Annual Meeting and Symposium Grow the newly developed Preceptor of the Year Award and the monthly GLATA Student Led Discussions The GLATA Student Senate would like to thank all students that attended the 2016 GLATA Annual Meeting and Symposium. We encourage all students within District IV to reach out to their individual state representatives regarding any questions, comments, or ideas to help us better the student session in 2017 and educate other students throughout the year. The next few years will be a time of progress and change within the Athletic Training professions and we hope to help represent the students as a voice throughout the district. We hope to hear your opinions and ideas this year and will do our best to create an even better 2017 Annual Meeting and Symposium. Professionals and students from around the district gathered for four days to further their knowledge of numerous subjects in the field of Athletic Training. The student program this year consisted of presentations on the Graston Technique, using EEG to diagnose concussion, special tests for the knee, clinical applications of pathology and pharmacology, and many more. Also included in the student program were the student skills challenge, a BOC Exam resource session, and the GLATA quiz bowl. On Saturday, two interactive student learning labs took place. The first lab was a presentation on S-I joint dysfunction by David Craig, and the second was an introduction to advanced immobilization techniques for the prehospital setting, presented by David Berry. This year, the GLATA Student Senate once again organized a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House Charity for a service project. The GSS set up a table for the duration of the symposium to collect monetary and item donations. Also at this table, the GSS set up a station for students and certified ATs to apply for a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number. The GSS estimates that roughly 70 individuals applied for an NPI number at their table. To apply for an NPI number as a student, go to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/ and follow these instructions: 1. While applying for your NPI, you must indicate your taxonomy code. 2. The Healthcare Provider Taxonomy Code set is a hierarchical set that includes codes, descriptions, and definitions.
