“A learning community encouraging achievement and embracing diversity”
In the pack that goes out at the start of the year, we
wanted to send the Foundation membership invoices.
Unfortunately this did not happen. However, the AGM
is now booked for Monday 29 February at 7.00 pm in
the icentre, and membership forms will go to all
families directly following this event.
We remind parents that the Foundation is a tax
deductible structure that enables the school to
generate funds for improving our facilities. The first
major project is the resurfacing of the netball courts at
a cost of $35,000, which will occur in the next school
holidays. The Foundation also has a life membership,
which then has a family name inscribed on the honour
board in the front office. Please have a look at the
membership form when it arrives, or better still, come
to the AGM on the 29th. For more detail please
contact the office.

AGM of Parents and Friends
The PnF serve a fundraising function for the school, as
well as our main group for maintaining our pastoral
care. Providing lunch on VIP day, taking care of
second hand uniforms, our very famous quiz night –
just some of the activities that have been successful in
helping to make us feel connected as a strong school
community.
On Wednesday 24 February at 7.00 pm, the PnF will
hold their AGM. We need parents to nominate to be
on our committee – either in one of the executive roles,
or as a volunteer helper. We really welcome new
parents as it is a great way to become a part of the
school – coffee mornings are held regularly where you
get to know other parents in a relaxed and friendly
environment.
From the Principal
Dear Families,
Lara Paris was a student of our school who this year
would have been in year 7, having been here since
reception. Along with her older brother Jai who
finished year 7 in 2014, the Paris family have had a
long and close association with our school.
Sadly, Lara passed away during the school holidays
after a lengthy battle with illness.
Today, a small ceremony was held with some of her
best friends and some of our teachers who were close
to the family, and we dedicated room 4A in Lara’s
name. A plaque was unveiled, followed by an
afternoon tea in the icentre.
Our thanks to those who attended, and on behalf of
the school we offer our best wishes to the Paris family
for strength and courage as they deal with their grief
in the time ahead. I am absolutely confident that the
close friends of the family will ensure ongoing support
for Pam, Graham and Jai.
Evacuation procedures
Numerous schools across Australia have recently been
targeted by a computer generated bomb scare. Every
threat, despite it being seen as part of a nationwide
hoax, must be taken seriously. The staff have recently
reviewed our emergency procedures and we will do
some evacuation practices, as a whole school and class
by class for some of our younger year levels.
Should an evacuation be required with a threat made
to the school, the following will occur:
Foundation

We phone 000
We ring a continuous siren
An alert goes out on the school app
Students assemble on the artificial playing
fields until the police provide an all clear.
- We take hats with us – there are drinking taps
nearby
- Should it occur during a play break, students
will still go directly to assembly area.
Note: When parents receive the alert on the app,
please do not come to the school. Wait at least one
hour before contacting the school to ensure the issue
has been resolved.
such toys (i.e. trucks) to our school, for the students to
play with. Items can be dropped off at our front
office.
The IB Learner Profile develops students who are
caring, who show empathy, compassion and respect.
This IS our students, although there are occasions when
this attribute is forgotten by some. In week 2 a
student’s property was damaged by a few students
and this is just a friendly reminder to respect all
people’s property.
For parents attending the Year 7 Canberra
information evening, I look forward to your
attendance. This session will aim to clarify any
questions you have about the trip and provide you
with useful information and an itinerary of events. Look
forward to special guest appearances from former
students at RPPS who will share first hand, why this trip
has become an annual tradition for our school.
In an emergency situation where there is no electricity,
the school has a loud hailer with both a siren and
emergency alert system installed. We have processes
in place to ensure our students can be notified quickly
despite the lack of a school siren.
The school will now also re-look at our invacuation
procedures – a process for locking down the buildings.
Lastly, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful
work of our SSO staff and welcome our new staff
members to the school, Pam Pearce (Term 1) Jodie
Roche and Anna Smeaton. School Support Officers
undertake a range of roles within the school and
contribute towards the daily operations of the school
and they assist teachers in helping students to realise
their full potential.
Acquaintance night
Thank you to many parents who attended this week’s
acquaintance night. Numbers were again strong across
nearly every class, and we appreciate the interest
shown by our community as we set up for another
successful year. Parents of students from room 1 will
have their own acquaintance night shortly due to Mr
Rohde’s untimely illness this week.

Music News
Every year as a PYP school, classes set up Essential
Agreements that set the tone for collaboration and
team work for the year. Teaching teams have been
meeting over the past two weeks to set their own
agreements about planning for effective teaching and
learning. Having attended these meetings, I have
witnessed first-hand the culture of collaboration that
exists at RPPS. Student achievement increases
significantly in schools that are organised around
democratic and collaborative practices that foster a
shared notion of growth and improvement. I want to
congratulate our teachers on their planning days as
they have developed and refined in these sessions,
rich and authentic units of inquiry. Students will be
happy too as their planning involves fun filled
excursions, activities and camps for 2016.
The start of the year has been fairly smooth with only
a few changes to sort through. It was great to talk to
parents who caught up with me during acquaintance
evening. I am available every day at school so please
give me a call or contact me via email if you have any
questions.
Instrumental tuition
There have been a couple of delays at the beginning
of the year with changes of staff. Our apologies for
this.
We welcome back teachers from last year and also
welcome Alan Aungles, teaching woodwind and Nick
Vladcoff working with brass students, from DECD
Instrumental Music (IM). All other classes should have
begun this week. If for some reason your child has not
received expected lessons, please contact me as soon
as possible.
The sandpit in the playground has many plastic toys
that are easily broken or misplaced. Our Early Years
teachers would love some new toys for the students
with which to play. If you have any wooden or metal
toys at home that you no longer use, our Early Years
teachers would appreciate your generous donation of
Instrumental hire should all be settled this week. You

will be billed for the full year through the school. This
year we are sending out a hire agreement with your
account and would appreciate their prompt return
with or without payment.
We use a school budget hire structure to keep your
costs down. Please contact me if you have any
questions.

What a start to the year! We have been working
hard to tackle the mountain of admin that the
beginning of year brings. Thank you to all the parents
who have been collecting books to cover. We have a
bunch of orders on their way so expect to see a
steady stream of green bags ready to be collected.
South Australian Public Primary School Music
Festival
Rehearsals for Senior Choir began this week and all
year 6/7 students are taking part in a week of trial
choir. After this trial, students may then choose to
continue to participate. Rose Park has a tradition of
high quality choirs. We will be performing as part of
the Public School’s Music Festival to be held in
September and there are a variety of other events
planned, including Winter Concert 6 July 2016.
Information will be sent home for all parents. Please
return the reply slip indicating whether or not your
child wishes to be involved.
Concepts and the Living Nature Gallery
One of the iCentre goals this year is to engage
students, particularly in the early years, with the IB
PYP concepts. As a concept-based curriculum, the eight
concepts are central to its philosophy.
Concepts are big ideas with universal significance
that allow the teaching and learning to transcend the
physical parameters of the classroom and help
students better understand their world. They are
enduring understandings that fit within each of the
subject disciplines but also ties them together with a
bigger picture in mind.
Troupe
There are opportunities for students in Year 6/7
interested in dance or solo singing to participate in
troupe, either as a dancer or as a soloist. Please check
the festival of music website or contact me soon.
www.festivalofmusic.org.au
Concepts are the lenses that a unit is viewed
through and separates units of inquiry from thematic,
project-based units. Rather than asking students to
research a favourite plant or animal and produce a
report, a conceptual lens narrows the focus through
open-ending questioning and in-depth critical thinking
related to the relevant concept/s. For example:
Vacancies exist for instrumentalists to play as part of
Festival Orchestra in nearly all sections including
percussion, brass and keyboard. If you would like to
be involved please contact me.

Rosemary Hallo will be taking string ensemble this
year, beginning at 8.30 on Monday morning. Please

A big thank you to Wendy Goodson and her fantastic
team of Green Thumbs who are busily propagating
plants to use in our living gallery and who will
maintain and care for it along the way. While we are
in the early stages of this project, we have some
exciting plans such as terrariums with small animals,
nature walks, expert guest speakers in the natural
sciences and more! If you are a parent or student with
a love of nature, please come and chat to me if you
would like to contribute in any way!

Welcome to Term 1….
To the Parents & Caregivers of Rose Park Primary
School,
Welcome back to the start of a new year. We hope
you all had a fantastic holiday break.
Thank you to everyone who participated in our
holiday club. It was a success with many great
excursions, incursion and club based activities. Summer
of colour was the theme we followed, which influenced
a range of craft, sports and games. Some of the
holiday club highlights included bounce, inflatable
world and the zoo!
We are happy to announce that we are now open
from 7am (Monday-Friday) for before school care.
The change of time will also occur to Holiday Club
where the service will be open from 7am-6pm. This
suggestion came from parent feedback, therefore my
regional manager and I worked hard to ensure this
could happen. Many thanks for your patience and
support.
Staff and children have been working very hard to
create an area in the back garden which promotes the
environment and sustainability. We have got this area
up and running this week and will continue to work on
this throughout the term. Please don’t hesitate to come
and see the hard work the children have put into this.
2015 Rose Park Yearbook: There is a misprint in the
previous Yearbook. Please feel free to bring in your
copy, and we can exchange it for a new one.
Reminder
Please notify the front office if you have moved or
changed contact details as soon as possible by
emailing [email protected] or ringing
us on 8331 7521.
Security checks only last for 3 years. Please check
your Security Check has not expired and allow at
least 6 weeks for a new check. Forms available
from the front office.
Sports News
Rose Park Primary School Soccer
The soccer season for the boys and girls at Rose Park
starts in May (Term 2) in the Eastern Zones Primary
Schools Soccer Association. The school enters teams
from Year 2 through to Year 6/7 for boys and last
year we entered our first girls team comprising of
year 5, 6 and 7’s. Although not starting til term 2 we
need to submit teams in March. For me to do this we
need at least 11 players at each relevant year level,
as well as a coach and manager for each team.
Without sufficient numbers and parent volunteers to
coach and manage, teams cannot be submitted. Forms
can be obtained from the front office. If you have
any queries, you can e-mail me via
[email protected].
We look forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting
new children and families throughout term 1.
Thank you,
Liana Tangredi

Community News
Possible playing locations are either Lothian Avenue

Road Campbelltown. Teams play at the same time
and location each week that is allocated to their team.
Coaching for each team is a volunteer basis. Parents
are required to be the coaches/managers/helpers for
the teams and if there are no volunteers there will be
no team. So get involved, put your hand up to
coach/manage or help for the team, it will be lots of
fun and your child will love you being involved. The
coaching positions for each team can be shared and
supported by several parents.
