My Trip Across the USA
This is the story of how I moved to Washington from Maine two years ago. We moved to
Washington because my mom and dad had both lived there when they were younger and we had family
there. We thought about moving to Washington for a long time, but never thought that it was possible.
I’m going to talk about moving, leaving family, and the fun things we did on the way.
We started thinking about moving in April of 2012. We talked about moving and if we would
really want to do it and we figured out we were really going to in December of 2012. We packed and
finally sold our house in May and moved out in August of 2013. It was very hard saying goodbye to our
family and friends in Maine and wondering when we would see each other again. We left on August
10th 2013, and this trip will forever be the most awesome experience for me.
We started driving early in the morning and I was very excited. I didn’t go on many trips when I
was younger so I didn’t know what to expect. We went though many states and we usually were driving
twelve hours a day. I remember going to New York, I expected a city with lights and taxis driving around
but I didn’t know that was only in New York City. It wasn’t how I thought it would be but it was still very
nice.
Driving in the backseat of a Yukon with two brothers was surprisingly nice but as you know
siblings still like to gibe at each other. Sometimes our mom would send quiet intimations for us to stop
fighting. So we usually would quiet it down for a little bit. It was very hard to understand what my
parents were saying from the front seat so I would usually have them reiterate so I would understand
what they were saying. They were usually pointing out mountains and cool things on the way.
I remember going to Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming. It was huge and seemed
very stolid. There was a little shop that sold little alien stuffed animals and little toys and candies. The
people there were very amicable and usually made small talk with my parents. We also went to Mount
Rushmore, it was amazing I couldn’t help but gape at the sight of it. There was a shop with a movie
theater inside and we got to see how Mount Rushmore was made.
When we went to Montana we got to see the Badlands National Park, it was amazing seeing
how the rocks were shaped and the layers inside. When we finally got to the hotel in Montana it was
dark outside but we still went to the pool and hot tub. I couldn’t help but grimace when I felt the cold
water on my foot but I finally went in and it was nice. Thinking that night that we would see our family
that we hadn’t seen in seven years was very exciting.
The next day we went through Idaho into Washington and finally to our new hometown and
drove around for a while. We finally went to my grandma’s house and were reunited with our family.
That day is a day I will never forget, a memory that will never be forgotten for years and years to come.
