Ways to Welcome Ashley Wright Ashley is a happy ten-year-old girl with the brightest smile. She is not shy, and loves to meet people. Her mum and dad, Laura and Peter, and twin sister Amanda are determined that Ashley’s disability doesn’t get in the way of her living life to the full. It has not yet been determined what Ashley’s disability is, but she has already developed far beyond expectations. Ashley’s physical development has been slow, but she continues to improve and surprise everyone. She uses a leg brace to walk. Her left arm and leg work best for her, as a stroke has affected her body’s right side. Ashley has trouble with coordination. Ashley still has seizures, though these are very small, and mostly not noticeable to others. Ashley speaks a few words, and also uses some sign language, or will take you to whatever it is that she needs. She understands what others say to her, and is quite determined to communicate. Ashley does not read. Ashley may test her buddy at first, to see what she can get away with. Buddies – be gentle, and firm! Make sure you have with you Ashley’s Buddy Bag of special items from home. If Ashley needs help to go to the toilet, please call her mum or Dad. Laura and Peter’s goals for Ashley at our church are that she finds acceptance and friendship; that she understands as much about God as she is capable; and that she attends a church where she is not the only child with a disability. They also hope their other daughter Amanda will be able to enjoy time with other children and families, and not be required to provide care for Ashley while in the program. In addition to these goals, we hope that Ashley and her family will be welcomed into our church family; that she will have a buddy to accompany her and help her participate on Sunday mornings; opportunities to make friends; and that her parents will confidently be able to attend church together, knowing Ashley is well cared for.
