Course Goals
There are various objectives of Spanish 212. The first is to build on previously learned reading, writing,
listening, and speaking skills in Spanish. Communicative goals are placed at the forefront with a focus on
various core communicative functions along with the grammatical structures that support them. These
structures are recycled throughout the course to reflect the real-life use of language. These include, but are
not limited to, the following:
 describing characteristics, qualities & perceptions of people, places and things
 making comparisons and expressing likes and dislikes
 talking about and narrating past, present and future events
 hypothesizing about life experiences
 reacting to experiences and recommending solutions to situations
A second goal is to develop rudimentary knowledge of cultural differences between the U.S. and the
Spanish-speaking world. Some examples are:
 historical events, festivities and artists in the Spanish-speaking world
 geography and culture of Spain, the Caribbean, Mexico & Central America, the Andean region
and southern Cone
 differences in social expectations and cultural values
 unique cultural perspectives from the Spanish-speaking world
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
As a means of assessing for success in this course, the student will focus upon the following objectives:
1. Comprehend the spoken language well enough to get the main idea and some details from
discussion in class or video material.
2. Talk about everyday topics, such as school, work, and interests.
3. Read literary texts and respond to them orally and in writing.
4. Produce written compositions on a variety of everyday topics.
5. Know the basic rules of Spanish grammar and use them in writing and speaking.
6. Produce written and spoken narration or dialogue about present, past, future and
hypothetical situations.
7. Explain cultural values of the Hispanic world as well as the underlying similarities and differences
among cultures.
Statement of Disability Services: Any student with a disability needing academic adjustments or
