Edition 17 20 October 2016 Year 12 students who commenced their schooling with us in the Junior School visited today for an assembly and morning tea. The Year 12 boys are pictured above with the Prep boys. This was a wonderful occasion. From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents This morning we held a short assembly followed by a morning tea for Year 12 boys who commenced their time at Toowoomba Grammar School in the Junior School. This is an annual event, with approximately 60 Year 12 boys visiting the Junior School today. The assembly featured some brief speeches including one from Guido Zuccoli (Year 12), who was School Captain of the Junior School in 2011 and is now a Year 12 Prefect. Guido spoke on behalf of the Year 12 boys and Kai McLoughlin, our current School Captain, spoke on behalf of the boys from Prep to Year 6. Year 12 boys enjoying morning tea and play time with our current Prep boys Of the current Year 12 boys, eight have completed the full journey, commencing at Toowoomba Grammar School in Year 1, 2005. This was the same year the Prep Year was established at our School. At the conclusion of the assembly the Year 12 boys enjoyed morning tea with the Prep boys. I hope our Prep boys enjoy a similar occasion in 2028. Music Honour Boards Music Honour Boards were officially unveiled in the Junior School last week. These honour boys for our premier instrumental competition, Musicians’ Cup and our long standing singing competition, Singers’ Trophy. Both honour boards have been backdated to recognise all past winners. I thank the Junior School Supporters’ Group for funding these items. L-R Ms Fraser and Corne Wiid in front of the Singers’ Trophy Honour Board Year 5 Leadership Program Our Year 5 boys are currently involved in a leadership program that runs across this term. The aim is to prepare the boys well for taking on the responsibility of being our senior year group in 2017. The program involves weekly leadership and team building sessions run by class teachers, Junior School executive and Mrs MacFarlane. The Year 5 classes also spend DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) sessions with our youngest boys in Prep and Year 1. One day each week, I have a pizza lunch with smaller groups while we explore goal setting and leading by good example. In addition, Mrs MacFarlane, our Student Wellbeing teacher, has organised a leadership day, run by an external company Unleashing Personal Potential, with the program being titled ‘Aspire Higher, Leadership and Resilience Training for Primary Schools’. The boys are engaging well with the program and I look forward to their contributions in Year 6 in 2017. Class placement of students Class placement of students for next year is in the process of being finalised and no changes will now be made. This information will be provided to parents and boys in the near future. I ask parents to trust the professional judgment of the teaching staff and more broadly of the School with regard to class placement as this is viewed very seriously and has taken some time. This is done in a careful manner ensuring classes are balanced both academically and socially and boys are matched with teachers and with one another. Providing information about your son that is relevant and discussions about class placement are appropriate in some instances, but this should only ever occur through my office. While I will always listen to parents and recognise there may well be valid points to discuss, the bigger picture is also an issue and, as such, I reserve the right to place students as appropriate, matching boys with teachers and aiming for balanced classes, academically and socially. Junior School Supporters’ Group AGM The Junior School Supporters’ Group Annual General Meeting will occur on Monday 7 November. Further information is contained within this newsletter and nomination forms for next year’s positions were sent home earlier this week. Regards Scott Campbell Head of Junior School From the Deputy Head of Junior School Nude Food Day Thank you to the boys and parents who supported Nude Food Day on Tuesday. This trial run proved to be very successful. This is something we would like to make permanent each week for the remainder of the year. School Banking School Banking (Commonwealth Dollarmite Accounts) continues to operate with Dollarmite account deposits being dropped off at the office each Tuesday morning in the collection box. For those students who don’t yet have a school banking account with the Commonwealth Bank, there are information packs available at the office. The program also offers financial benefits for our school. These include $5 for every account opened. Students also receive various rewards for deposit targets reached. Please encourage your son to open a Dollarmite account and make regular deposits. On behalf of the Junior School I would like to sincerely thank Dr Michelle Murphy for coordinating the school banking for the past two years. As her son, Ryan, will be moving into the Senior School next year, we will be looking for a parent who would be willing to take Michelle’s place as the Commonwealth Banking Co-ordinator. If you are interested, please let me know. Haircuts Recently I have noticed a few boys who require a haircut. “The school’s regulations concerning haircuts are as follows: the hair must not touch the collar, and must be neatly shaped at the back of the neck. The ears must not be obscured and side-levers must not extend past the middle of the ear. Extremes of hairstyles are not permitted (including very short haircuts) Boys are not permitted to dye or colour their hair.” This is an excerpt from the Student Handbook. Lost Property There are already quite a few items in the Lost Property box. It is important to ensure that your son has all his property labelled. The location of the Lost Property box is near the side entrance to the Junior School staff room. Grandparents’ Day Grandparents Day is a chance for children and the community to thank grandparents for their love and support. In 2016, Queenslanders will celebrate Grandparents’ Day on Sunday 30 October. Grandparents’ Day recognises the significant contribution that grandparents make to their families and communities. The day is celebrated annually in Queensland on the last Sunday in October. Mike Sharpe Deputy Head of Junior School From the Head of Teaching and Learning ICAS Congratulations Well done to all our boys who participated in the ICAS Science, English and Maths exams this year. These exams give the teachers an opportunity to collect another piece of assessment to evaluate areas for improvement for each year level and also to support the data they have already collected throughout the year. It was especially pleasing this year to see the number of boys who received awards of Merit and above. Overall, approximately 60% of our cohort from Year 3-6 achieved Merit awards or above. Our Year 4 boys can be especially proud of their achievements with 100% of boys in Year 4 who undertook the test receiving awards of Merit or above. Congratulations especially must go to Will Smith (5W) and Oliver Clifford (4W) who were awarded High Distinction awards which places them in the Top 1% of the participants who sat the test. Learning Support reports Boys who are currently participating in the Learning Support programme will receive reports from Mrs Cantle and myself, which document their progress and indicate the areas that need continued support. I am pleased that many boys who currently receive Learning Support will be exited from the programme for 2017 due to the wonderful improvements they have made. Compulsory Prep Year State parliament has now passed legislation making it compulsory for students to complete the Prep year before they can be enrolled in Year 1. This change will come into effect for any new enrolments for the 2017 year. Dyslexia Empowerment Week: Sunday 16 to Saturday 22 October Dyslexia Empowerment Week is now in its fourth year. This national event was created to increase awareness of dyslexia, with many events and activities planned. The theme for 2016 is “Rethink Dyslexia," with a focus on the strengths and talents of people with dyslexia. It is also an opportunity to challenge the many myths and misconceptions that surround dyslexia. Reading and the Brain For those interested in cognitive psychology and the neuroscience of reading, the work of Stanislas Dehaene is also likely to be of particular interest. His book, Reading in the Brain, published by Penguin, has been recommended by Sir John Rose, who described it as "essential reading for all those with a stake in teaching reading" and by Peter Westwood, who described it as "excellent brain food". Dehaene has a number of lectures available on YouTube which are both fascinating and accessible to the general reader. Jason Locke Head of Teaching and Learning Sports News Track and Field This week, we had two Junior School boys compete at the Queensland Primary Schools’ Track and Field Carnival in Brisbane. I enjoyed seeing these two boys competing against the best athletes in the State. Well done boys. Charlie Randall came 1st in his heat and placed 4th in the final and with Charlie Bragg receiving a bronze in shot put. 1. Charlie Randall was in the 10 Years 800m. 2. Charlie Bragg was in the 12 Years AWD 100m, 200m and shot put. On Thursday 27 October, we will have a team from Year 5 – Year 7 represent Toowoomba Grammar School at the Junior GPS Track and Field Carnival in Brisbane. The boys will travel by bus to and from QSAC (QEII). Parents are welcome to attend to support the boys. Information will be sent home on how to obtain a ticket to enter the stadium. Aquathlon The Darling Downs Aquathlon trials are being held next Friday in Dalby. We have 5 boys representing the Junior School at this event which consists of boys running 1km, swimming 200m and running 1km again. This is a sport that is growing in popularity and competitors need to be strong in swimming and running to be considered for this event. Good luck boys. Sporting Recognition Congratulations to Charlie Randall who has been awarded an incentive award from Sports Darling Downs. Charlie will attend a breakfast tomorrow morning where he will be presented with his award and an invitation to attend a public speaking course with Karen Smythe. Well done Charlie. Invitational Games On Tuesday 11 October, we played host to Trinity Grammar School, Sydney, in basketball and cricket. The T20 cricket match was a close game that saw Trinity Grammar win by 8 runs. Both teams had opportunities to kick on and win but it was Trinity that closed the game out well with some strong bowling. Trinity Grammar School 6/119 defeated Toowoomba Grammar School 8/111. The basketball game was played with wonderful sportsmanship. Trinity Grammar were a very strong and well drilled team that had control of the game all the way through. Our boys tried hard but struggled against the Trinity defence. Trinity Grammar School 69 defeated Toowoomba Grammar School 12. Toowoomba Grammar School got off to a slow start due to our tight fielding with Scott Radford taking some awesome catches but then their batters gained confidence and ended up with a score of 119 runs. When it was our turn to bat Chace Oates and Oliver Chaffey opened the batting and displayed some excellent skills to get us going and Chace Oates was our highest run scorer. Unfortunately, Toowoomba Grammar could not catch their score and Trinity went home with the cup. I’d like to thank the boys for a great match and good sportsmanship. Harrison Tzannes (6H) Cricket Captain Let’s shake on it – Harrison Tzannes won the toss Some fine bowling skills being displayed A proud Year 6 Cricket Team On Tuesday 11 October the Year 6 GPS Basketball team played the Year 6 basketball team from Trinity Grammar. We had a good start to the match, with Gus Downie giving Trinity a very hard time to get down the court as he defended very well. All the boys had a great game and finished up well. Unfortunately, in the end we didn’t quite get there with the final score being 60-12, but we all had a great time and it was a good way to finish the season with a great game. There are two major activities this term which involve the Junior School Supporters’ Group. Your support for these events would be appreciated as all funds raised are returned to the Supporters’ Group to fund future activities or projects. The first is our Sausage Sizzle which is being held tomorrow, Friday 21 October, requiring a gold coin donation. The second event is the Twilight Concert on Friday 11 November which will involve all of the boys from the Junior School. The Supporters’ Group will arrange for pizzas to be delivered on the night with orders to be placed prior to the event. There will also be drinks and other items for sale on the night. This is a great event and parents are encouraged to bring a picnic blanket and ‘refreshments’ to celebrate the boys’ performances as the year draws to an end. If you have not attended a Twilight Concert before, please ask parents who have and they will surely pass on how enjoyable the night is and what you need to bring. Megan Milner President Junior School Supporters’ Group Chess Championship The annual Junior School Chess Championship was held throughout the course of term 3. There were 26 participants from Years 4 - 6. The depth of the current talent pool was on full display as members of the First and Second IV teams were challenged (and sometimes beaten) by quality chess from boys on the fringes. The winner at the end of the tournament was Noah Taylor who finished on four and a half points with four wins and one draw. He was closely followed by runner up Sam Gladwin who finished with four wins and a loss. Congratulations to all of the boys who took part in the tournament. Evan Rees Chess Coordinator After School Care What we have done over the last fortnight This past fortnight at after school care has been filled with great activities to help the boys with their skill development. Inside, we did craft activities that involved creating our own Minecraft man, colouring in and free paper creating time. The boys also enjoyed playing a lot of chess during the week with many of the boys going head to head in the game. Outside, the boys had their own choice of play activities that involved sandpit fun, tag on the playground and various ball games. The boys had a group game of soccer, which they all seemed to enjoy working as a team and showing their skills. What we have planned for the next week This week at After School Care we will be focusing on putting the boys’ minds to the test with a few science activities such as constructing a car that moves from the wind and playing with the cogs on a ‘make it yourself’ clock to see if the boys can get it to tick. Outside will include having the boys choose their own activity and play as a group along with educator run group games. What to do if your child is absent from After School Care?
