Critical Thinkers The second of our Big Five Learning Results is: Critical Thinkers. In our own words, we say, “Solve problems!” It is our goal and desire to train young people to carry out problem solving skills from a distinctively Christian worldview (Philippians 4:6-9). In all academic areas, we purpose to give them lots of opportunities to investigate beyond the obvious, differentiate between fact and opinion, use book knowledge to solve problems creatively and think critically in real-life situations. Using their sense of taste to differentiate between different kinds of apples (kindergarten, science) and thinking beyond the obvious to gain a greater understanding of the circumstances that impacted life in the early colonies (5th grade, social studies) are just two examples of our classroom teachers providing your children with a challenging, coherent and relevant curriculum that results in student achievement of the Big 5 Learning Results! Asbestos Notice Principal:…………………...…………………….…...Mr. Long School Secretary…………………….................…..Mrs. Tackman Secretary………………………….…………...……..Mrs. Paige Annual Notice to Parents and Staff of Heights Christian Schools, The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA) requires elementary through secondary schools to identify asbestos-containing material in school buildings and take appropriate action to control the release of asbestos fibers, where applicable. As you may know, asbestos was used for many years in building materials because its properties made it ideal for insulating, sound absorption, fireproofing and a variety of other uses. The EPA banned most uses of asbestos as a building material in 1978. Each school that falls under the jurisdiction of AHERA is required to inform parents and staff annually that an Asbestos Management Plan is on file, available for viewing by anyone who asks to see it. Our campus was built in 1992, long after the prohibition of asbestos-containing building materials was enacted. This notice is provided for compliance reasons only. If you are interested, please contact me and I will make arrangements for you to review the Plan during school office hours. Please do not park there or take a long time dropping your child off in the morning or picking up your child in the afternoon. We must all move quickly so all students can get to class and so we don’t clog up the driveway. Thank you for your help with this. …………………………………….……...……….Miss Nolte ……………………………………….……...……Miss Rivera …………………………….………………....…..Mr. Sherrill …………………………………….……...……..Miss Sterling ………………………………………….….…..Miss Tometich …………………………………….…...………..Miss Vasquez Calendar: January 2017 January 3rd School Resumes January 9th After School Club Registration Begins Booster Club Meeting January 11th Family Night out at Chick-Fil-A January 12th Kindergarten to Pretend City 1st Grade to LA Zoo January 13th Spirit Day - Look Alike Day January 13th 5th Grade -Living Museum (Room 7) January 16th Martin Luther King, Jr. Day No School, Day Care Available January 20th End of the 2nd Quarter, 1/2 Day of School, Day Care Available January 25th 3rd Grade to Aquarium of the Pacific January 27th ACSI Spelling Bee - West Covina January 30th Report Cards go home February 4th Open House 10:00 a.m.-12:30p.m. February 6th No School/Teacher In-Service Day Day Care Available The Principal of the Matter I have shared many times over the years about how fast life goes by. When I first started as the principal of this school in August of 1997, my oldest son, Zach, was 2 years old. In less than 5 months from now, he will graduate from college. Over the last 22 years, we did a lot of things together as a family. We always took summer vacations, whether it was a camping trip when we had no money or a family vacation to Scotland. We celebrated every birthday and holiday. We went to endless little league games, football games, piano recitals, school events and so on. When our kids were small, we had family nights where we played games and had little Bible lessons. My wife and I also had special one on one dates with our kids. We did all kinds of stuff. But now, it all begins to fade as time passes by and new stages of life rapidly close in on us. (Fortunately my wife took lots of pictures and made albums so I can remember these things in my old age!) I was talking to Zach the other day and he mentioned, in passing, the things he’s looking forward to in the coming years; getting a car, paying off his college loans, starting his family, buying a house, etc. It really sunk in that those were huge events in my life but now they are ancient history for me. For him, they are his soon to be future. I am very proud of his accomplishments and where he is in life. He has a very bright future ahead of him. He has studied hard and accomplished much in college. He has worked hard and developed his craft as a graphic designer. He is a great thinker and is well spoken regarding politics and religion. However, what I am most thankful for is that he has developed a great relationship with Jesus Christ. A couple of years ago, he set up his automated tithing with the church he attends in Riverside. This was done all on his own. He went on a missions trip to Mumbai, India last summer. I didn’t start tithing until I had a full-time job and I never went on a mission trip like that. He’s ahead of me! I’m grateful for that. So, here’s every parent’s challenge. Time and life go by very fast. While it seems like we have a lot of time ahead with our kids, we really don’t. Look at the world around us. Our kids have all kinds of obstacles in their way. They need all the help from us we can give them. So spend time with your children and build into them the characteristics that are important for a successful life. Where do you want them to be 10, 12, 15 years from now? How can you help them get there? Not every day, month or year will be easy. They all turn into teenagers at some point. But, with God’s grace, they get through those times and, with His blessing, they’ll turn into Godly men and women. This is a new year. If there are any changes you want to make in your relationship with your children, now’s a great time to start doing so. What more could any parent want than to have a successful child who loves God. To me, that is the ultimate goal of parenting! ~Mr. Long
