This table lists Hebrew keywords, abbreviations, and acronyms that appear on Jewish matzevot
(tombstones). It also presents the spelled out Hebrew for abbreviations and acronyms as well as the
English translation of the Hebrew. The table consolidates information from the following sources:
• Alcalay, Ruvn (2000). The Complete English-Hebrew, Hebrew-English Dictionary. 5 volumes. Tel
Aviv: Miskal Publishing and Distribution; and, Brooklyn: Chemed Books.
Alcalay and Even-Shoshan are the defining dictionaries for Hebrew. Both contain many
abbreviations and acronyms.
• Ashkenazi, Shmuel and Dov Yarden. "Otsar Rashe Tevot" (Thesaurus of Hebrew abbreviations).
Hebrew. 601 pages. ISBN: 965-17-0203-6.
Ashkenazi, along with Even-Shoshan and Alcalay are the definitive works on Hebrew
Abbreviations.
• Biella, Joan and Rachel Simon (compilers). “Hebrew Abbreviations”. Princeton University
Library’s Cataloging Documentation. Available on the Web at
http://infoshare1.princeton.edu/katmandu/hebrew/open.html.
This source gives the Hebrew abbreviation, romanization of the abbreviation, and the spelled out
romanized form. It does not give the full Hebrew form, and it does not provide translations. The
abbreviations are based on volume 4 of the 1988 edition of Even-Shoshan. Only a few of the
abbreviations from this source are in the following table.
• Blatt, Warren. “Reading Hebrew Tombstones: A JewishGen InfoFile.” Available on the Web at
http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/tombstones.html.
• Caplan, Judith Shulamith Langer-Surnamer. How to read a Hebrew tombstone anywhere in the
world: Tombstone translation topics or the Matzevah Matters.“ Presented at The 24th IAJGS
International Conference on Jewish Genealogy, July 2004 in Jerusalem. Available on a
Conference cd-rom and from the author ([email protected]).
• Doctor, Ronald D. “Kremenets Uyezd Jewish Cemeteries Translation Project.” This project is
translating more than 4,100 matzevot from the Jewish cemeteries of Kremenets, Vishnevets, and
Yampol, Ukraine. Since the project is ongoing, the list is updated periodically.
• Floersheim, Eva. “Learning about the Gravestones from Lubaczow: A Beginner's Tutorial.”
Available on the Web at http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/lubaczow/bgntut.htm.
• Holtzman, Ada. “Abbreviations and terms found on tombstones in Poland”. Available on the
Web at http://www.zchor.org/ABB.HTM.
• Tagger, Mathilde A. (Compiler). “Hebrew Acronyms on tombstones and death registers.”
Presented at The 24th IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy, July 2004 in
Jerusalem. Available on a Conference cd-rom and from the Israel Genealogical Society
([email protected]).
In the following table, a double-quote (“) or an apostrophe (‘) in the Hebrew abbreviation or acronym
indicates where letters or words have been omitted. Please report any errors or additions to Dr. Ronald
D. Doctor ([email protected]).
