Scholarships Awarded Through Hanover Education Foundation
Al Gardner Horticulture Scholarship Fund – $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Patrick Henry High School
with a stated intention of following a post-high school study of Horticulture, Biology, Environmental Science, Landscaping
Design, or other related fields in the Natural Sciences.
Alex Moore Scholarship - $2,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Hanover High School having a GPA of 3.0,
enrolling at James Madison University, and having demonstrated positive leadership and citizenship skills.
Austin Brown Pleasants Memorial Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior having a GPA of 3.0 and
having demonstrated positive leadership and citizenship skills.
Beth O’Brien Hubbard Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from all four high schools
and The Georgetown School having a GPA of 3.0 and who will enroll in a four-year college majoring in Business. The awardee
should show positive work ethics and leadership skills.
Bette J. Harmon Memorial Scholarship – $5,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Atlee High School and LeeDavis High School who will enroll in a four-year college or university pursuing a degree in either English or Education. This
scholarship is given in memory of Bette J. Harmon, a long time librarian in Hanover County Public Schools.
Christie Minton Peace Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Lee-Davis High School who will be
majoring in Nursing at a college or university in Virginia.
Covenant Woods Scholarship -- $750 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from all four high schools who will be pursuing
a career in the medical field or senior living.
Eleanor J. Sydnor Honor Award – $2,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Patrick Henry High School majoring in
Education. This scholarship was set up by the PHHS Class of 1942 and is given in memory of Miss Sydnor who taught English and
Math at Henry Clay High School for 26 years.
Hanover AARP Chapter Scholarship - $500 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior having a GPA of 3.0 or better, exhibited
strong leadership and citizenship skills, and demonstrated a strong work ethic. This student will be pursuing a career in special
education and/or the healthcare field.
J. K. Samples Scholarship – Up to $3,000 scholarship awarded to three graduating seniors from all four high schools. Mr. J. K.
Samples served as the Superintendent of Hanover County Public Schools from 1965 -1980 and was committed to quality
education for all students. It is in this spirit that the J.K. Samples Scholarship Fund was established. The J.K. Samples
Scholarship, funded through the estate of Mr. Samples and his wife, is to be awarded to graduates of Hanover County Public
Schools to assist with their post-high school education.
Kevin Ritz Memorial Scholarship – $1,500 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Lee-Davis High School that is
interested in pursuing a degree in Education. This scholarship is given in memory of Kevin Ritz, a 1988 graduate of Lee- Davis
High School and University of Virginia.
Mario Colon Rivadeneira Memorial Scholarship – $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from one of the four high
schools who aspires to a make a significant contribution in the field of Music.
Robert & Helen Parker Memorial Scholarship Fund – $5,000 scholarship awarded to ten graduating seniors from Patrick Henry
High School that will be pursuing a degree in Medicine, Mathematics, Business, or Science.
The Insurance Doctor Scholarship - $2,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Patrick Henry High School pursuing
a post-high school degree.
Thomas L. Purvis Scholarship - $1,000 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Patrick Henry High School.
