assignments.
☐ Portfolio Cover (Mandatory)
Using a large sheet of blank paper (to be distributed by me), create a portfolio cover.
The Front:
• the title and the author
• images – may be hand-drawn or a collage of images from other sources
(online/magazines)
• 3 significant quotations from the novel that reflect major themes
The Back:
• a “hook” – a brief excerpt from an exciting part in the story (no more than 20
words) followed by a short summary of the story without spoilers. Give hints
about what could happen and what type of story it is.
• 2 quotations from critics (whom you have invented) praising the novel e.g. “Taut
with tension, filled with drama.” – The Chicago Tribune
• a brief biography of the author
• a picture of the author
Choose TWO of the following to complete.
☐ Wanted Poster
You will make a “Wanted” poster for either Johnny or Ponyboy. It should include:
1. Character name, picture, and physical description
2. Crimes they committed (minimum of three)
3. Short paragraph containing quote(s) from the novel that provide evidence for their
crime
4. Known hang-outs, nicknames, and personality traits
5. Reward for turning this character in
☐ Re-write the ending
Not happy with the way it all ended? In this option, you will write a different ending to
the story (one that does not end with something fantastical e.g. space aliens or zombies,
please). This ending should be chapter-length (at least 2-3 typed pages).
☐ Re-write 2 scenes from a soc’s point of view
What would the rumble be like from the Socs’ perspective? What about the first scene?
The time by the fountain? Bob’s funeral? Pick 2 scenes and rewrite them from a soc’s
perspective. Each scene should be at least 1 typed page.
☐ 5 Poems based on lessons Ponyboy learned
Poetry is important to Johnny and Ponyboy. Write at least 5 poems based on situations
from the book. Each poem should have a final copy that is typed. Add decorative
boarders and color to spruce it up.
☐ Heroic Newspaper Article
Write a newspaper story about the church fire and the heroic actions of the three
characters. It should also include who, what , when, where, and why. First you will need
to type your article, then make the newspaper page including headlines, pictures, etc. Be
sure to look at an actual newspaper article before you begin.
☐ Timeline (Positive/Negative events)
Pick out 12 significant incidents in the book and make a horizontal timeline with the
incidents. Each incident should have a two-sentence explanation of why they are
significant. On the timeline, put the positive incidents above the timeline and the negative
incidents below. Include another 1-2 sentences in your explanation on why each incident
was positive or negative.
