Pronoun – word that takes the place of a noun.
Writers use pronouns to keep from using the
same noun over and over again.
Spelling Words: (Review Week)
Singular Pronouns – replaces a singular noun,
or a noun that names one person, place or
thing.
Reading Story: (Readers’ Theater)

Plural Pronouns – replace plural nouns, or
nouns that name more than 1 person, place, or
thing.
Ex: we, us, you, they, them

“You” can be either singular or plural.

Subject Pronouns – pronouns that are used to
replace the subject(s) of a sentence. (The
subject of a sentence is who or what performs
the action in the sentence.) There are only 7
subject pronouns: I, you, he, she, it, we, they

Grammar Skill: (Review Week)
Singular Possessive Nouns – (only 1) shows
who or what owns or has something. To make
a singular noun into a possessive noun, you
usually add ’s at the end.
Ex: The boy’s dog is brown.
Plural Possessive Nouns – (2 or more) most
plural nouns end in s. To show that one of
those plural nouns owns or has something, I
just add an apostrophe (’) after the final s.
Ex: The boys’ poems were good ones.

Object Pronouns – pronouns that take the
place of an object(s) in a sentence. (In a
sentence, an object is a noun that is not the
subject of the sentence – noun that receives an
action.) They include: me, you, him, her, it,
us, them
Using I and me – when you talk about yourself
as the subject, you usually use the pronoun I.
When you refer to yourself as the object, you
often use the pronoun me.

Antecedent – the noun that is referred to by the
pronoun. Example: A bear digs at the tree
until it finds an insect to eat. (“It” refers to the
bear. Bear is the antecedent.)
Agreement in Number – for singular nouns,
you must use a singular pronoun. For plural
nouns, you must use a plural pronoun.

Focus Skills: (Review Week)
“You” can be either singular or plural.
Plot – what happens in the story. The plot
presents a problem and tells how the
characters solve it. A plot contains information
and events that set up the problem. Other
events tell how the characters solve the
problem.
Agreement in Gender – the pronouns he and
him should be used when referring to male
antecedents. The pronouns she and her
should be used when referring to female
antecedents. If the antecedent is a thing, the
pronoun it is used.
Robust Vocabulary Words/Definitions:
1. Issue – an issue is an edition of a
newspaper or magazine.
2. Advice – if you give someone advice, you
tell what you think the person should do.
3. Consult – when you consult someone, you
ask him or her for information.
4. Recommend – when you recommend
something, you tell someone that you think it is
good.
5. Sensible – someone who is sensible makes
good decisions and judgments.
6. Devise – to devise is to figure out a way to
do something.
7. Luscious – something that is luscious
appeals to your senses, such as your sense of
taste.
8. Shudder – if you shudder, you are trembling
from fear or from being cold.
9. Expertise – if someone has expertise, he or
she knows a lot about a particular topic or skill.
10. Correspondence – if you send
correspondence, you are communicating in
writing.

Author’s Purpose – authors usually write with a
purpose in mind (the reason he or she writes
something). Several reasons authors write: to
inform, to entertain, or to persuade.
Sometimes authors have more than 1 purpose.
To identify the author’s purpose, readers need
to consider what the main message is and why
the author would want to give that message.
Skills and Strategies: (Review Week)
Use Context Clues – to learn what a new word
means, look at the words around it. These
words can give clues about the word’s
meaning.
Context clues may include definitions (familiar
words that define an unfamiliar word) or
descriptions (details that are clues to an
unfamiliar word), which can be used to figure
out the meaning of an unknown word.

Use Graphic Aids – used to help explain ideas,
gather and organize information, and even
make reading more enjoyable. Kinds of
graphic aids are: photographs, drawings,
maps, charts, graphs, and diagrams.

*This Wednesday, December 21st is our
Walking Field Trip to State Farm Insurance
Agency in Orbisonia. Please have your child
dress for the weather and have comfortable
walking shoes.
*For our Christmas Party we will be doing a gift
exchange. Boys need to bring in a $5.00 gift
for a boy and girls need to bring in a $5.00 gift
for a girl. Please send the gift to school
wrapped. If you put a gift tag on, please only
write who it is from; we pull names to see who
gets what gift. No child will end up with his/her
own gift. The Christmas party will be on
Wednesday, December 23rd.
