Henderson County Schools Home Visit Blitz
The 2013 Home Visit Blitz will take place on Tuesday, July 30,
2013 from 10:00 a.m. through 7:00 p.m. The Henderson County
Schools Home Visit Blitz allows for each student to receive a brief
visit form a staff member from his/her school. The blitz is a way
to build a relationship between the home, community and schools
before the school year starts. These visits to the homes of elementary, middle, and high school students will set the tone for a successful school year. Research shows parent, guardian, and community support is the most important way to improve school/
student achievement. When parents, guardians, and the community

The visit will be brief. At the end of the visit, you will receive an informational packet that
you are encouraged to look through as it contains important information in connection with
your child’s education.
JULY 4TH CELEBRATIONS
As July 4th approaches, you and your children are probably thinking about sitting out in your
yard with family and neighbors, eating barbecue, and watching beautiful fireworks bursting
in the night sky. July 4th celebrations can be a lot of fun.
Fireworks, often the centerpiece of July 4th celebrations, can actually be very dangerous.
According to Prevent Blindness America, from 1980-1994, fireworks accounted for 29 fires,
65 explosions, and 114 deaths. Almost half of the injured are children ages 19 years old and
under.
Sparklers are perhaps even more dangerous because many people think of them as harmless
fireworks that children can use, but sparklers are the second highest cause of fireworksrelated injuries requiring trips to the emergency room. Sparklers can potentially catch
clothes or hair on fire, and they can heat up to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit (hot enough to melt
gold).
To ensure that you and your children have both a fun and safe July 4th, please observe these
fireworks safety tips:
Do not let your child play with fireworks, and do not use them yourself. Instead,
take your family to see a public fireworks display put on by professionals who know
how to safely handle fireworks.

Avoid sparklers. They can potentially catch clothing on fire.
Never attempt to make your own fireworks.
Keep yourself and your child away from other people who are using sparklers or
lighting their own fireworks. Bystanders are more frequently injured by fireworks
than the people who use them.
Have water near-by for emergencies and for pouring on fireworks.
Know where the closest phone is located or carry a cell phone in case a fire occurs
and the fire department is needed.
Have a safe holiday!
