2013 Helped design general training for hospital staff on use of the Emergency Operations Plan
(EOP) and specialized training for the incident command staff on the use and
implementation of the EOP at government run hospitals in the Republic of Mauritius as
part of a CDC externship.
2012-13 Researched media and social media coverage and comparison of recent hurricanes
affecting the United States, including media and social media document research.
2010-11 Researched post-Hurricane Katrina Biloxi, MS, including participant observation, semistructured interviews, surveys, and media and historical document analysis.
2009 Researched FEMA’s history and organization and public perceptions of government
emergency response in Iowa City, IA, including historical document research, FEMA
independent study courses and certifications, and semi-structured interviews.
2008 Assisted researcher examining FEMA and IHDEM response to the Midwestern floods in
Columbus Junction, IA.
2008 Assisted undergraduate group working with Story Corps to interview affected residents from
the Midwestern floods and determine how to analyze material in Iowa City, IA.
2007 Researched media analysis of coverage of Hurricane Katrina, including media analysis
comparing coverage of different affected geographical areas.
2006 Researched preparedness and short-term relief and recovery efforts, casino-based tourism
economy, media coverage, and social responsibility in post-Katrina Biloxi, MS, including
surveys, media and historical document analysis, and participant observation.
2004 Researched the former Yugoslavia and use of historical and archaeological symbols for
Bachelor's honors thesis, including historical document and media analysis.
