Honoring Past Presidents:
James Madison
James Madison studied
history and law at the
College of New Jersey,
known as Princeton
University today. After
his education he
returned to Virginia to
help create Virginia’s
Constitution and lead
the Virginia Assembly.
Madison played a key
role in setting the
course for the new
country and government. He helped write
a series of 85 essays,
known as the Federalist
Papers, that urged
people to accept the US
Constitution and make
it law. Madison also
encouraged Congress to
pass the Bill of Rights.
When James Madison
became the fourth
president, France and
Great Britain were at
war. Madison asked
Congress to declare war
on Great Britain, too,
which resulted in the
War of 1812.
The First Trust
and Savings Bank
Madison is featured on
the Presidential Gold
Dollar coin that was
released in November.
Next year, look for
Gold Dollar Coins
featuring James
Monroe, John Quincy
Adams, Andrew
Jackson,
and Martin
Van Buren.
James Madison served
as the United States
President from 1809 to
1817.
