Distribute graph paper.
A sk the students to draw an angle where both rays of the angle are
on the grid lines of the graph paper.
One possible response:
State that the angle that the students have drawn is a r i ght angl e .
A sk the students to draw two more angles on the graph paper: one
smaller than the right angle and one larger. Remind them that the
size of the angle is not determined by the length of the rays of the
angle but by the space between the rays.
Review, to make sure that the students have properly drawn the
angles. State that the smaller angle is called an ac ut e angl e and
the larger angle is called an o bt use angl e .

Present Matific ’s episode Gue ss W hat ! - I de nt i f yi ng
T r i angl e s to the class, using the projector.
The goal of the episode is to describe triangles by their side lengths and
angle measures.

A sk: Which shape should we choose?
Click on the triangle that the students indicate.
A question will appear over the monster’s head. Read the question
to the students.
Students should answer based on the chosen triangle. If they have
difficulty detecting the size of the angles or the lengths of the
sides, you can move and rotate the triangle so that it sits on the
grid lines.
Click on
or
, as the students indicate.
If the answer is correct, the monster will swallow the triangles that it has
determined are not your triangle and then ask another question.
If the answer is incorrect, the monster will look down, and the question will
wiggle.
The monster will continue to ask questions until it can identify the
triangle that the students have picked.

Circulate, checking students’ work.
Have the students work in pairs. Distribute the following. Ask
students to sort the letters based on the instructions.
Place each letter in the appropriate category, based on its angles. Some
categories will contain only one letter; others will contain more. For example,
the letter A belongs under “3 acute and 2 obtuse” for its five angles.

Distribute a small piece of paper. Have students draw triangles,
based on the following specifications.
1. Draw one triangle that has three acute angles and two sides that are the
same length.
2. Draw one triangle that has one right angle and no sides that are the
same length.
Collect the papers to review to ensure that all student responses
are correct.
