Welcome to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Parish
From the Pastor’s Desk
Two weeks ago, our parish held a Food, Fun, and Fellowship gathering in the Gathering Space. I want to personally thank Christian Service committee for organizing this event, so parishioners could get together and hear some information about healthcare options and the planning issues that surround the end of our lives. Parishioners who were able
to attend this event were thankful for the information, and they wanted me to make sure that some of this information
got out to the rest of the parish. Therefore, I provided the most important points below in this column for parishioners'
information. If you have any questions or concerns about these issues, please do not hesitate to contact Bonnie and
Carol, the parish nurses for Our Lady of Victory, or me. We want everyone to know that our parish wants to help you in
the midst of your health challenges and end-of-life issues, so again, please do not hesitate to contact us for furthermore
information or any questions.
Within the Quad Cities, there is increasing momentum to offer more palliative care services for patients who are
suffering with chronic health problems (congestive heart failure, COPD, dementia, etc.) or experienced a severe
injury (broken hip, etc.) or medical event (stroke, heart attack, etc.). Therefore, the doctors, nurses, social
workers, and healthcare aids within this scope of services are focused upon providing an additional layer of care
to help a patient increase their quality of life in the midst of their complex health problems. Parishioners with
chronic health problems and/or have experienced severe injuries or medical events are encouraged to ask their
physicians about the possibility of adding palliative care to their treatment plan. By and large, these services
are covered by insurance, so there is no additional cost. Parishioners just need to know that they need to ask
for this service since this type of care is still gaining traction here in the Quad Cities. Bonnie and Carol are
available to consult with parishioners about this possible avenue of care given their health conditions.
Hospice is a health care option when a person cannot be cured of their medical condition, and it is thought that
death will happen within a six month window. This type of medical care is focused primarily on pain management and other treatments that will help a person experience the best quality of life during the final days of
their life. Hospice can work out of a person's home, and there are also hospice facilities here in the Quad Cities
if a person's illness will not allow them to stay at home. The services provided by hospice are great for families
who would have to provide the medical care to their loved ones if these services are not provided, and like palliative care, hospice care is covered by most insurance plans.
Many people and their family members have some hesitancy towards hospice care because they believe that they are
"giving up" when this option is chosen. From my perspective as a priest, hospice is not "giving up" on life, but
hospice helps patients and their family accept that there is a natural end to life. As mentioned above, hospice
services focus on adding quality to the life of its patients and family, so the intense medical treatments of hospitals and doctor's offices will no longer occupy the lives of patients and families since these routes have been exhausted. Many healthcare professionals are ready and willing to make referrals to hospice care as long as a patient and his/her family are open to this possibility.
Please make sure that you reach out to the parish nurses and me if you have any concerns regarding a medical diagnosis or the possibility of seeking palliative or hospice care. The Genesis Hospital System does provide the parish
a list of parishioners who are currently receiving treatment in hospitals (and this only happens if a patient allows
the hospital to contact us), but outside of this list, the parish only gets information that is passed along to us.
Therefore, please make sure that you let someone in the parish know, preferable the office or one of the parish
nurses, so we can make sure that you get the help and support that you need in the midst of your health problems.
Finally, the Health and Wellness Committee has purchased funeral planning guides for people who are interested in
making some of these choices before there is an immediate need or so their family knows their wishes. Many
members of our families refuse to talk about the possibility of a person dying, so these conversations just do not
happen. However, please simply ask request a funeral planning guide through the office or the parish nurses, fill
it out, and you can put it away with other important information that will be needed when we are called home
by the Lord. Furthermore, this planning information may become more important if the family and friends who
would be in charge of your funeral preparations is not Catholic. This process of planning your funeral is not necessary, but it is another resource that the parish will provide to parishioners now and in the future.

Fourth Sunday of Lent
Stewardship Moment
JFK News
How often do we invest our time, talent and treasure in
creating an appearance that does not matter at all to God?
We strive to impress with our clothing, home, career, possessions, car and other marks of distinction. But none of
these illusions of greatness will impress God. Instead, God
will look into our hearts to see how much we loved Him,
how much we loved others and how we showed that love
by the way we used our gifts here on earth.
Be on the lookout for our redesigned website!! It is due for launch April 1!!!!
Stay up to date with our Facebook page and
our closed group JFK Moms and Dads page for communication with other JFK families!!!!
Hunger Ministry
Those served at the Salvation Army are
always grateful for the delicious meals

your generosity in serving the hungry of
our community!
Classes meet March 29, April 5, 12, 19, and 26, and May 3.

Odd Jobs Ministry
Spring Event
We are looking for many hands to make light work! Odd
Jobs Ministry is organizing a Parish spring cleaning event
on Saturday April 1st – Rain or
Shine. The event starts in the parking lot at 8am on Saturday and will
run until about 10:30. Please bring
work gloves and a rake or
shovel. We have a long list of outdoor activities like cleaning out
flower beds, raking the grounds,
and cleaning gutters. We also have
a list of indoor activities in the
church and rectory if the weather doesn’t cooperate. The
indoor activities mostly include painting or cleaning. Anyone can participate (Ages 8 to 88). We will provide Donuts
and Orange Juice to keep our helpers energized for the
odd jobs.
We are disciples of Jesus making faith matter and sharing
God’s love to make more disciples!
Welcome back! We meet at 7pm on Wednesday this week
in the youth room to talk about Mary, her role in salvation
history, her place in our spiritual lives, and how to talk
about all these things with your non-Catholic friends who
might think you’re crazy! Can’t wait to see everyone for
food and good times.
ALL TEENS ATTENDING NCYC AND THEIR
PARENTS are invited to an informational meeting on pricing, payments,
and fundraising! There will be two opportunities to attend. The first is Sunday, March 26th, immediately following
the 11am Mass, in the Gathering Space Meeting Room. We
will have coffee, juice, and donuts. The second opportunity will be on Tuesday March 28th, starting at 7 pm, in the
Parish Center; light refreshments will be provided!
Grow with God. Love your neighbor. Share your faith.

Wellness Corner
Everyone has questions about their medical care and has a
right to ask them and feel confident in the answers provided. Asking questions can help you be an active member
of your health care team. The National Patient Safety
Foundation has developed a system to help you communicate. It's called, Ask Me 3. Here are the following 3 questions you should ask of any health care provider (nurse,
doctor, pharmacist, therapist or any technician giving you
a medical test). 1. What is my main problem? 2. What do
I need to do? 3. Why is it important for me to do this? If
you still don't understand you can say, "This is all new to
me and I don't understand, will you please explain it
again?" This system is designed to better help you be involved in staying healthy or getting better. For additional
information go to www.npsf.org/askme3
Christian Service Ministry
Please help. King's Harvest needs
many volunteers to help the homeless and their pets in downtown
Davenport. Most of us never consider the circumstances that bring
people to the shelter. It may be our
own insecurities that makes us fear
and ignore the unfortunate of our
society. It may be that by the grace
of God it could be us; mostly we
just don't like to think about those
that are so needy and what caused them to be in this circumstance. People may be homeless due to a missed
house or rent payment; a major illness forcing bankruptcy,
loss of job or transportation, addictions, runaways, disabilities, spousal abuse and mental illness. Every week it
takes between 80 to 130 volunteers to serve the homeless
at King's Harvest. This ministry would not be offered without the large number of volunteers giving their time to
help those in need. You can serve at the shelter, meal
site, pet ministry, food bank/grocery giveaway and
monthly giveaway. Take your family or your church group
to volunteer. To volunteer call 563-570-4536 or go to their
website and click on volunteer: www.kingsharvest.net.
Please read Matt. 6:19-21,James 2:1-17.
DIOCESAN PRAYER FOR 2017
To be used as we await a new Bishop:
O God, eternal shepherd,
who govern your flock with unfailing care,
in your mercy grant your Church in Davenport
a pastor who will please you by
his holiness
and will show us your watchful
care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Amen.
