I want to take this time and wish everyone a productive, positive, and successful 2015. We continue our journey toward continued success for every student here at Oliveira. Your part on this journey is to maintain close
contact with your child's teachers as we progress forward.
We are fast approaching our 2nd progress reporting period. During the 1st reporting period our students engaged in many exciting learning experiences. Since California adopted the Common Core State Standards,
rigor and expectations have increased. In Mathematics, the focus is on mastery and deep understanding of
skills and concepts. Students are expected to solve challenging word problems and explain their answer. While
in Language Arts students are learning how to closely read text and be able to dig deep to find supporting evidence. Students write opinions and conduct research. These are just a few of the ways that your children are
learning the Common Core State Standards and preparing for the SBAC, the new standardized test to measure
how well students achieve the standards. The SBAC Test will replace the STAR Test.
Thank you for your continued support of your child's education at home.
Always,
Ian Squibb, Principal

Have you moved?
Rainy Days
Board Policy 5111.1 requires you to notify the school office
within 5 days of moving. Failure to notify the school is falsification of residency if you do not notify the school that you have
changed residency and complete new forms and provide the
required documents. You may be liable for the expense of education your student at an approximate cost of $6,000 per school
year. Your student may also be dropped from enrollment.
When it rains, please do not enter the MUR with your child at
8:15pm. With nearly 600 students trying to get to their classrooms, extra adults just add to the confusion. Please have your
child lower their umbrellas before they enter the building. If
entering a classroom or the office, please leave umbrellas outside—the water may make the floors slippery!

The definition of perfect attendance is to be at school from
your start time (8:00, 8:30 or 11:35) until the end of the scheduled school day — every day. Those who have tardies or absences for any reason will not be considered as having perfect
attendance.
While it is important for all students to be at school, it is more
important for them to be healthy. Please do not send your child
to school when they are sick. Students will have the opportunity
to make up any missed work if their absence is excused. Student who are absent unexcused (for any reason other than illness) cannot make up missed work or tests.
National Geographic Bee
Hello Everyone! Thank you for all the help
and support to make the initial National Geographic Bee a success for our 4th-6th grade
contestants.
There is still time to sign-up to be on
FUSD's Curriculum and Instruction Committee.
In order to guide the District on implementation of Common Core State
Standards and the resulting shifts in classroom instruction, FUSD staff recommended to the Board of Trustees that we form a Curriculum and Instruction Committee. As stakeholders, the Committee’s responsibility is to advise
and give input into the District’s Curriculum & Instruction planning, by
reviewing/recommending curriculum and materials that are high quality and
equitable and advising in relevant instructional matters. The committee will
also oversee special task forces as commissioned by the Board of Trustees
on specific topics of interest to the community, such as educational equity
and health/sex education.
The members of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee will serve a
two-year term. The membership of the Committee should reflect the diversity of the community and the student body. The Governing Board is seeking
seven (7) parents to serve on the Curriculum and Instruction Committee. The members of the Committee will be selected from those who apply
for the position by filling out an application and submitting it to the Curriculum & Instruction Director, Mrs. Linda Anderson by the due date.
Oliveira’s 2015 National Geographic Bee Competition winner
is Kayode G, a 6th grade student from room 21. Runner-up
was Lynn K., a fourth grade student from room 30.
Over the break, Kayode’s family moved to another city in California, so Lynn will be representing Oliveira in the National
Geographic Bee.
She will now compete for the state qualifying round by submitting a written test. Wish her good luck! We will keep you
posted on the outcome.

Recorders...Help our students make some joyful noise!
¡Inicia el Año Nuevo con buen paso!
El Año Nuevo es un buen momento
para hacer cambios o intentar cosas
nuevas. Motiva a tu(s) hijo(s) hacer
Step into the New Year with a Step in the Right Direction
The New Year is a great time to make changes or try something new. Encourage your child/ren to make one small
change in the New Year that reduces the number of trips to
school by car. Make a pledge for the new year!
This year, more than 25,000 students from 130 Alameda
County schools participated in International Walk & Roll to
School Day an increase of nearly 4000 kids compared to
2013!
“More schools are joining the movement,” said Safe Routes
to Schools staff, Nora Cody . “Walking school buses, monthly walk to school days, and other ongoing events are all helping to change our kids’ travel choices in a sustainable and
positive way.”
There are only a few days left to help fund recorders for Oliveira's
4th, 5th and 6th grade students! Please visit our Donors Choose
project at http://www.donorschoose.org/project/recorder-rockstars/1347687
Thank you!

Keep Our Eagles Safe
Make Traffic Safety a PRIORITY
Do:

Leave early and give your walkpool/
cyclists/carpool extra time for drop-off/
pick-up.

Use the valet lane…patiently. Many students ride safely in car seats and boosters—and it takes extra seconds for them
to unbuckle and exit cars. Respect their
right to be safe!

Follow the guidance of all posted signs.

Park legally and walk your child into school.

Drive carefully and be extra cautious around schools (traffic
tickets are double the fine in school zones!).

Get involved and offer to help with drop-off/pick-up.

Be a responsible pedestrian/bike rider/driver.

All parking spaces at Oliveira are assigned to staff—please
help our staff be on time to work by legally parking on the
streets nearby.
