The prolific author, scholar and humanitarian, who
recently died at 87, leaves a legacy of memory
As a witness to the horrors of the Holocaust, author Elie Wiesel said
he felt compelled to write. And throughout his dozens of books and articles,
and hundreds of speeches and interviews, he disseminated his dark tales
as an eyewitness to the genocide that killed some six million of his fellow
Jews.
Wiesel explained in several early 1970s dialogues with American
Holocaust scholar Harry James Cargas that to him, to be a writer was to
fulfill his life's mission. Their talks were later published in 1976 as
"Conversations with Elie Wiesel."
"True writers want to tell the story simply because they believe they
can do something with it - their lives are not fruitless and are not spent in
vain. True listeners want to listen to stories to enrich their own lives and to
understand them. What is happening to me happens to you." Wiesel told
Cargas. "Both the listener and the reader are participants in the same
story and both make it the story that it is." Up until Wiesel's death at 87
on July 2, 2016, millions of readers around the world had already
"participated" in his story. Millions more will.
The following is a brief selection of some of Wiesel's many words.
SELECTIONS FROM 'NIGHT' (1958)
"Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere."
"For the survivor who chooses to testify, it is clear; his duty is to bear
witness for the dead and for the living. He has no right to deprive future
generations of a past that belongs to our collective memory."
pictures to right (article continues on page 2)
“But who will be the last survivor, the last to tell the tale,
the one who, like the prophet Jeremiah, said,
“I am he, I was there.” Who will be our witness?
What will happen to our legacy?”
Remarks by Elie Wiesel at Yad Vashem in 2002
Eli Wiesel quotes continued....
"I am not so naive as to believe that this slim volume
("Night") will change the course of history or shake the
conscience of the world. Books no longer have the power they
once did. Those who kept silent yesterday, will remain silent
tomorrow.”
From 'Open Heart' (200)
"I belong to a generation that has often felt abandoned by
God and betrayed by mankind. And yet, I believe that
we must not give up on either."
Nobel Prize Lecture 'Hope, Despair and Memory' (1986)
Remembering is a noble and necessary act. The call of
memory, the call to memory, reaches us from the very dawn
of history. No commandment figures so frequently, so
insistently, in the Bible. It is incumbent upon us to remember
the good we have received and the evil we have suffered."
"There may be times when we are powerless to
prevent injustice, but there must never be a time
when we fail to protest."
"These are the journeys..." This is the title of the portion of
the Torah (Teachings of God in Genesis to Deuteronomy)
that was studied last week in synagogues in Israel. The
reference comes from Numbers 33. In this chapter we read
of the 42 stations in the wandering of the people of Israel in
the wilderness until their arrival at the gates of the Land of
Israel....the Land of Promise.
Interestingly, Numbers 33:2 states that Moses recorded
"their starting points for their journeys according to the
word of the LORD, and these are the starting points."
Jewish sages teach that the 42 stations from Egypt to the
Land of Israel are replayed in the life of every individual, as
his soul journeys from its birth into the physical world until
it enters the world to come." Indeed, a study of the name of
each "starting point" in this chapter of Numbers is well
worth your time!
However, my focus is on the unusual use of the phrase
"starting points" and its repetition in this verse. The
duplication of this phrase emphasizes that we need to
remember where we came from and what we have
experienced. An ancient quote states, "Forgetfulness leads
to exile. Memory is the source of redemption." Our
redemption as believers in the Messiah, Jesus, is to be
remembered as a starting point in our lives as born again,
new creatures, members of the commonwealth of Israel, and
now heirs to the promises of God. In fact, in the
commandment to Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it
holy, the LORD explains that we are to remember
specifically on that day, His creation and OUR redemption
from slavery (sin). Deut. 5:15
What is most critical to understand, is that in all these
movements from starting point to starting point, each of
these were "according to the word of the LORD." When the
cloud of His presence set out, the Israelites set out. When the
cloud stopped, they stopped and camped.
The Sinai Wilderness
The clouds movement represented the palpable Presence and
Impact of the LORD in reality. When that Presence was on
the move the people felt compelled to do so as well. There
are many who are aware of God's Presence in the world
today but they are waiting. They are waiting for solutions
and easy results. They are waiting for "end results" or the
future to "appear."
Yet for some time now, it is clear that the LORD is
certainly "on the move" in regard to Israel, His Land and
His people. The world is being thrown into turmoil and
uncertainty while the land of Promise is being replenished
and nourished. Every nation that has attempted to come
against what has been the promised direction of the LORD's
plan, has found itself mired in turmoil and confusion.
So what is this passage relaying to us and to our Jewish
brethren? The message from the Torah is this: If the
Presence of the LORD begins to move, then so do we. This
is a direct reminder and call to our Jewish brethren in the
diaspora (living outside of Israel) to follow His Presence and
"come home." While many in Europe, South America and
even the United States are awaiting the perfect time for
"aliyah" (returning to the Land), or are not even considering
it....the message of Torah is clear. Whether in Paris, Miami,
Buenes Aires, Chicago, or London at present, those are just
the starting points, the pit stops of a long journey planned
by the God of Israel to gather His people back to His Land
of Promise. And He will continue to "move" on their behalf
and continue to call them home till the Day His Presence
covers as a cloud and His Glory radiates as the pillar of fire
once again over His chosen people! May it be so in our day!
"And the city has no need of the sun or of the
moon to shine upon it, for the glory of God has
illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. And the
nations shall walk by its light, and the kings of the
earth shall bring their glory into it.
And there shall no longer be night; and shall not
have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the
sun, because the LORD God shall illumine them;
and they shall reign forever and ever."
Rev.21:23-24, 22:5
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BOYCOTT ISRAEL
Many Christians today find themselves very suddenly in a situation where their church quickly becomes involved in a
debate about the Middle East, and threatens to boycott Israel. Most Christians have simply never thought about the Middle
East conflict very deeply, but just know that the region has seen many difficulties over the years. There is a concerted effort,
coordinated effort to boycott Israel which is managed by the Arab League, the Palestinian Authority, and activist groups
across the world, including activists now seeking to influence their churches against Israel. It is important that churches
maintain their integrity and independence of thought, and not allow themselves to be used as tools of corrupt foreign policy,
which what the BDS (Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions) movement targeted against Israel essentially is.
There has been a three layered boycott of Israel by the Arab League since Israel's inception, and in addition OPEC has
used Arab League policy towards Israel as a way to pressure the West economically regarding oil. The BDS movement is an
attempt to export this hypocritical and corrupt policy, and infuse it into Western thought and political life via the help of
political and religious institutions, including Western churches.
In such a climate, it is easy to overlook the fact that Israel today is the only country in the Middle East where the Christian
population is actually growing, due to freedom of worship in the region's only stable democracy. At a time when Christians
sadly are fleeing many parts of the Middle East (In Iraq of 2003 there were 1.5 million Christians, today there are only
250,000; Syria of 2012 there were 1.75 million Christians, of which 450,000 have already left, and the rate of ethnic cleansing
is rising exponentially), their numbers in Israel continue to grow, where the Christian population has quadrupled from 34,000
at the time of Israel's independence to approximately 200,000. There are many positive lessons that the region could learn
from Israel's treatment of its Christian community.
Errant theology pervading the church today that steals from Israel her inherited place in the redemptive story of our
Great God is the seed bed for deception that has crept into the church and found believers that are illiterate of the Word
prey to the evil of the BDS movement. The greatest remedy against BDS is for the Body of Christ to return to the Holy
Scriptures, Genesis to Revelation, and see that the WHOLE of His Word is written to Israel, about Israel and for Israel. If
your theology is leaving Israel out of HIS redemptive picture, then your identity in Messiah is warped and your theology is
wrong. His Word is Truth!

"There will always be an Israel,
And Israel shall blest.
While hordes from hell keep trying,
to put her to the test.
For those who ask and want to know:
Why God's Chosen Man prevails?
Why empires come and empires go
While Israel never fails?
No power on earth can sever
What God has put in place.
For His Chosen on His Promised Land
Are covered by His Grace."

H. Fred Williams Gospel Ministries and Ruth Remnant
Ministry teamed up financially to sponsor Dylan Rice and
Katie Lilly from Alabama to attend the first ever,
International Young Christian Leadership Seminar at Yad
Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Authority and Research
Center in Jerusalem, Israel in June. Dylan, Katie and 28 other
young Christian leaders from ten different countries
participated in 50 hours of Holocaust study. Their studies and
touring related to the importance of young people today
understanding how the Holocaust happened, the societal
factors at play even now that were present in 1933, and how
the next generation in the church must be informed, aware
and bold in their stand against Anti-Semitism and the
persecution of believers around the globe. Pictured to the left
is of Dylan Rice with Hanna Pick, Anne Frank's best friend
up to the age of 13, when the Frank family went into hiding.
Hanna survived the Holocaust as a young teenager and her
story of survival is moving and inspiring. It is vital that the
younger generation of believers become the voice for these
aging survivors. Your gifts make this education possible!!
