Educational Objectives
Course Readings
Course
Activities/Experience
To learn essential Medical Spanish phrases/sentences, to obtain a close-ended History &
Physical and briefly discuss Assessment & Plan with Spanish-speaking patients.
 MEDICAL VOCABULARY/PHRASES - To learn and practice pronunciation of
phrases and sentences with interpreters (and willing patients) delineated in the
Medical Spanish Notebook. Any new phrases should be added to the notebook
for future cohorts so this course is dynamic, constantly improving.
 ROSETTA STONE – The International Committee purchased Rosetta Stone for
medical students and residents to learn basic non-medical Spanish. Students are
encouraged to use this simultaneously to help with pronunciation and
conversation.
 CULTURE - To learn how Spanish culture affects medical care. To learn about the
Interpreter’s role in the delivery of medical care.
The following materials will be used (assignments will be as individualized):
1. “Medical Spanish Notebook”
2. Rosetta Stone (minimum 3 hours in BSOM computer lab)
3. http://www.123teachme.com/learn_spanish/medical-spanish
Students will work with interpreters and bilingual staff at Bernstein Clinic or Brody
Outpatient Clinic.

Students will practice daily phrases and sentences during downtime between patients.
(Minimum 1 day) The students will be evaluated in the various clinics.
Students will receive feedback on performance about pronunciation, phrase and
vocabulary choice, how they are progressing. They will be encouraged to converse in
Spanish more and more gradually over the course of 2 weeks.
Students will complete a final assignment. They will write a full mock patient encounter
or a summary of an actual patient encounter. This written assignment may be included
in the “Medical Spanish notebook” for future cohorts as an example or the student can
have observed the encounter. This write-up must be submitted electronically to Ginger
Vann ([email protected] ) within 2 weeks after the rotation has ended.
