2014 - New Horizons

This Year, We Built.
Next Year, We House.
Thank you for being an answer to prayer.
God is so very good. That has been the theme of our year at New Horizons. With your faithful help, we’ve seen
God provide the resources for our new twelve-bed housing program. We’ve seen so many of you donate your
time and talents to moving, painting, demolition, and building the housing space. But more than that, we’ve
seen young people energized by the hope of a home at New Horizons.
This year, we started building. Thanks to all of you, next year we’ll welcome our first young people home. Until
then, we continue to encourage and support youth as they leave street life. Our apprenticeship program is
expanding and successfully placing youth into jobs and housing. Our case managers meet youth were they are
and walk with them as they journey away from the streets. And we continue to offer food, clothing, showers,
and encouragement to teens and young adults who have no place else to go. God is so very good. Thanks to all
of you for being an answer to our prayers!

Thank you, Hudson Family!
Since early this summer, Colette, Lana, Luke, Jeffrey, and Asha have
graciously and enthusiastically cared for our youth by managing our
clothing bank. Every other week, the five of them roll up their sleeves
to make sure clothing and hygiene supplies are available and accessible
to the 220 different youth who come through our Drop-In space each
month. When asked what he likes about coming to New Horizons, Luke
says, “It’s just nice to help people.” Thank you for your commitment to
serving the homeless and street-involved youth of Seattle!

Every soul that passes through these

life. To get such a variety together can
be difficult, and to keep the peace takes
a true community.
Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these
brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

In meeting the most basic of needs, Esther has gained new perpsective on
slowing down and accepting youths’ invitations to enter into intimate relationship. It’s as simple and profound as drawing a bucket of warm, soapy water.

“One day,” Esther says, “a young woman came in with a cut on her foot. I asked
if she’d let me wash it for her and she said yes. In that moment, all my squeamishness subsided. It wasn’t about the dirt and blood, it was instead a profound spiritual experience.”

But that all changed in the last year as Esther began volunteering in New Horizons’ Drop-In center. One of her duties is staffing the “self care” desk where
youth can do laundry, take a shower, get clothes, and yes, receive first aid care.

“Yes, it’s true I’ve worked in community health for a long time, but I don’t do
first aid,” says volunteer Esther Lorenzen. “If my kids sliced themselves open I’d
just call my husband―you’re up!”
