News and Notes May 2014 - Probus in Western Australia

PROBUS ASSOCIATION OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA INC
President’s Report
Greetings all.
Who would have thought twelve months ago that I would be back in the position
of President again now? Absolutely no one, but things change as we are all
aware and I am honoured to hold this position again for a further twelve
months.
On taking up this position I have informed the PAWA Committee that Olwyn and
I had planned some overseas travel this year so I will not able to attend all functions and anniversaries during July August and early September but please be
assured that PAWA will respond to all invitations and have a representative
present at all club activities when asked.
We have had some sad news of two clubs electing to close, another is having a
re-birth and on the positive side there is a likelihood of three new country clubs
commencing. More news on them as things develop.
PAWA celebrates its 30th Anniversary this year and a fitting function is being
planned to celebrate this occasion. Further news next month.
The second phase of the outcome of the strategic planning process held during
last year has commenced and more news on this will be forthcoming shortly.
Everyone will be able to participate and your input and presence will be most
welcome.
The committee looks forward to working with the clubs during this year of
implementation and development.
Keep enjoying Probus

The English Plural
We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.
One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.
You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?
Let's face it - English is a crazy language.
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger;
Neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
English muffins weren't invented in England.
Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English
Should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital
And in closing...If Father is Pop, how come Mother's not Mop.?
