I am extremely interested in environmental science,
currently in 12th (PCMB). Could you please let me know
of the best colleges in India and abroad offering
undergraduate courses in environmental sciences and
regarding their entrance exams.

Environmental Science is an enormously huge field
encompassing all aspects of keeping our environment clean
and protected. From attempts to mitigate air, water and noise
pollution, to waste management and protecting our natural
resources — there is scope for all. With global warming and
climate change on everyone's lips and carbon footprints an
international concern; this area has tremendous employment
opportunities.
Since the scope is so vast, you need to be very clear as to
what aspect of Environmental Science really interests you.
Depending on this decision, you would have to opt for further
studies in that area. If it is environmental engineering or
biotechnology, you would need to do your BE in that field;
most universities and institutes offer a post graduate degree
in Environmental Science for which a degree in science (any
discipline) is the essential qualification; though a few
universities do offer it as one subject as undergrad level.

Career opportunities in this field are immense today. As
long as you have the passion, zeal, commitment and ability,
you can do wonders. With increasing global concern for
environmental issues, the horizons are widening, both in
India as well as abroad.
Science to BA?
I am a PUC second year (repeater) of science stream, I
am interested in BA in journalism and communication.
As I am from the science stream, can I pursue BA?
Which are the institutions offering under-graduate
programs in journalism and communication or media
studies and what are the future prospectus of these
courses.
An environmental scientist’s job is to use scientific
principles and concepts of science and engineering to protect
and preserve the environment. It is both proactive and
research oriented in that preservation of natural resources,
ensuring a clean environment and reduction of pollution and
its effects are the main areas of focus.
Environmental Science encompasses both the natural and
social sciences. Environment scientists work mainly in R&D
and the industry but can also be seen in NGOs aiming at
social development and attitude change and attempting to
alter and direct national and science policies, as well as
environmental modelling and journalism.
Dear student,
Yes, you can do your BA in journalism and communication
after completing a PUC in Science. There are several colleges
that offer journalism or communication as one of the three
optional subjects. Choose a college that suits your purpose
based on credentials, location, prospectus and financial
considerations.
Karnataka State Open University, Manasagangotri,
Mysore, Karnataka 570 006 www.ksoumysore.com also offers
a BA in Journalism or Information Sciences through
correspondence or distance learning.
The future in this area is bright. With media expanding in
every way, for a determined individual, there is enough scope
for success. However theory alone will not help. You must
supplement your theoretical knowledge obtained at the BA
level with actual field experience. The course
also demands that you work as an
intern or trainee at different media
centers. If you definitely plan to
pursue a career in journalism
and wish to succeed, undergo
formal training in the different
core areas of journalism.

I have done my engineering. Currently, I am working
in a BPO. I have some software experience. I am not
interested in a call center job. Please guide me on other
opportunities related to tech support or hardware or
networking jobs.

With reference to your request for guidance on
opportunities related to tech support or hardware or
networking jobs, it would be difficult to answer without
knowing something more about which field of engineering
you have done, whether you have studied or have experience
in hardware and networking, how good you are in these
fields, what you are really interested in and what your work
aspirations are.
Since you desire a career switch from call center to tech
support, you have to first try and see whether such a change
would benefit you. Do this by trying to understand your
interests, abilities and personality. Try to:
■ Locate your interests — what is it in the tech support /hardware / networking job that really interests you; and what is
it in the call centre job that you do not like.
■ Your abilities and skills — do you have the required skills to
do well in the area you want to specialize in?
■ The kind of person you are, by nature.
What is it that you are looking for in the job you choose:
money, power, status, interesting work or a combination of
some or all of these
■ Your work values, professionalism and ethics.
Once you have answers to these questions, then look
towards changing your job.
About opportunities in the fields you have suggested, the
job opportunities are immense provided you have the
passion, perseverance, interest and ability to do a good
job.
The Government of India has also
come out with the Modular
Employable Skills (MES) skills
programs and ICT courses on
computer networking, hardware
etc are part of the MES
curricula. Getting a NCVT
certificate will definitely be an
added bonus in your CV. Go to

joining BCom, try and

■ Why did you join PUC Science in the first place?

change from Science

not interested in
the subjects or because you don’t
have the ability for
science? Is there some
other reason?
■ What do you plan to do after
completing your BCom?
If you get answers to these
questions, then you will have
clarity about your future
career. Join BCom with a
clear idea of how this will
lead you to your goal.

wonder what you should do
after your BCom.
