The RubberDucks rallied for a pair of runs in the ninth inning Friday night, but Harrisburg closer Robert Benincasa
recorded the final two outs with runners in scoring position to secure a 4-3 win for the Senators. The four-game
series is now even at a game apiece.
The star of the game for Akron was LF Anthony Gallas, who led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo homer, his
third of the season.
The RubberDucks are in second place in the EL West, just a half-game behind the Richmond Flying Squirrels,
who dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Bowie last night. The Baysox are in third place, 3 ½ games off
the pace. Richmond and Bowie will play eachother again tonight.
th
Today’s game is the 15 of 20 scheduled meetings with Harrisburg. Akron is 8-6 in the season series so far.
Washington Nationals OF Bryce Harper was 1-2, with a single, two RBI, and a pair of walks in his second AA
rehab appearance. He is expected to play for the Senators throughout the weekend. Harper has been on the
Nationals DL since 4/26 with a sprained left thumb.
CF Tyler Naquin left last night’s game after being hit on the right hand by a pitch from LHP Bryan Harper in the
nd
eighth inning. Naquin suffered a fracture of his 2 metacarpal and has been placed on the DL. Before the injury,
Naquin was 2-3 in the game, raising his team-leading average to .313.
2B Joe Wendle has also been placed on the DL with a hamate fracture in his right wrist. Wendle left Thursday’s
game after fouling a pitch away during his plate appearance in the fifth inning. He leads the team with 44 RBI.
SS Francisco Lindor left Wednesday’s game after being struck in the face by a ground ball hit by Erie’s Devon
Travis in the third inning. The ball took a bad hop and struck Lindor in the nose, causing a non-displaced nasal
fracture. He is not on the DL, and is expected to miss 7-10 days.
SS Erik Gonzalez made his Double-A debut last night after being promoted to the RubberDucks from Class-A
Carolina. He went 0-4, and did not have a ball hit to him. A member of the Indians 40-man roster, Gonzalez was
hitting .282-1-34 in 58 games for the Mudcats.

th
This is the 26 season of Double-A baseball in Northeast Ohio, and the 18 in downtown Akron. The franchise
began as the Canton-Akron Indians in 1989, and then moved to Canal Park in Akron as the Aeros in 1997.
On October 29, 2013, the team officially changed its name from the Aeros to the RubberDucks. The name is
derived from the city’s long history as the “Rubber Capital of the World.”
Akron has made the Eastern League playoffs 14 times overall, and eight of the last 12 years. The team has
captured four Eastern League titles—2003, 2005, 2009, and 2012.
Following this six-game homestand against Erie and Harrisburg, the RubberDucks will make a brief, four-game
trip to Erie, beginning Monday at 7:05. The team will return to Canal Park on Friday, 7/4, vs. Bowie.

Picked up first career save after working the final three innings of 3-1 win at BOW, 4/19.
In Canal Park debut on 4/14 vs. TRE, von Schamann threw five hitless relief innings during a 2-0 Akron loss. He
walked one and struck out one, and used just 43 pitches to subdue the Thunder.
Made Indians organization debut, 4/9, at ALT, going three innings in a 5-4 Akron win. He allowed a two-run home run to Andy
Vasquez, but fanned a season-high six batters.
Was opening night starter for the Chattanooga Lookouts (Dodgers AA) on 4/4, and earned 2-0 win vs. Jackson (7 IP).
Split time last season between High-A and Double-A in Dodgers system. Went a combined 11-7, including a 3-5, 5.00, mark
with Chattanooga. Made Double-A debut, 8/31/12, and picked up a 6-5 win at Birmingham.
His father, Uwe von Schamann, was an accomplished place kicker at the college and professional football levels.
Uwe von Schamann was a member of Oklahoma University’s 1975 national championship team, and was later named to the
Big 8 All-Century team. His game-winning kick with three seconds left against Ohio State on 9/24/77, gave the Sooners a 2928 win, and achieved legendary status after he helped lead Buckeye fans in a “block that kick” chant during a timeout before
the kick. After his college career, von Schamann was drafted by the Miami Dolphins and played six seasons in the NFL,
appearing in two Super Bowls and making 101 career FG’s.

Rally Falls Short as Senators Secure 4-3 Win by Kerry Crump
(Akron, Ohio) June 27, 2014 – Harrisburg Senators starter John Simms stole the show in his Double-A debut, earning
the win in the Sens 4-3 victory over the Akron RubberDucks on Friday evening at Canal Park.
Simms (1-0) threw seven innings for Harrisburg, allowed four hits, one earned run and walked one batter.
The RubberDucks are in second place in the EL West, just a half-game behind Richmond. The Flying Squirrels lost both games of a
doubleheader against Bowie last night.
Harrisburg was first on the board, with Michael Taylor scoring during a double steal attempt with Washington Nationals
rehabber Bryce Harper in the first inning. A solo homer by Ricky Hague paired with an RBI single by Harper extended the
Senators lead to 3-0 in the third.
A triple off the bat of Jake Lowery got the ball rolling for the RubberDucks in the bottom of the third. Tyler Naquin followed with an RBI
single to score Lowery, making the score 3-1.
An RBI fielder’s choice by Harper extended the Senators lead, bringing the score to 4-1 in the top of the eighth.
Left fielder Anthony Gallas cracked his third solo home run of the season leading off the 9thagainst Senators reliever
Tyler Herron. After walking the next two hitters, Herron was lifted in favor of closer Robert Benincasa. An RBI double by
Ronny Rodriguez drove Tony Wolters home tightening the Harrisburg lead to 4-3, but Benincasa closed out the game and earned the
save for Harrisburg, by inducing a groundout by Jordan Smith. Both of Benincasa’s saves this year have come against the
RubberDucks.
Centerfielder Tyler Naquin went 2-3 on the night, prior to exiting the game in the eighth after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.
Naquin leads the team it hits, with 95.
The loss was charged to RubberDucks’ starter Cody Anderson (2-7). The right-hander threw six innings, allowed four
hits, three earned runs, walked three batters and struck out six.

seasons as a player in Akron, appearing in 122 games with 17 homers and 54 RBI. After concluding his playing career, he spent two
seasons as a staff assistant with the major league club before embarking on his managerial career with Mahoning Valley in 2011.
#45 Jeff Harris, Pitching Coach—Now in his sixth season in the Indians organization, Harris assumes the role of pitching coach for the

We Are the RubberDucks
On October 29, 2013, team-owner Ken Babby stood before a capacity audience at the Akron Civic Theater and announced that the
team would be known henceforth as the Akron RubberDucks. In addition to being symbolic of the fun, family-friendly brand of
entertainment offered by minor league baseball, the name also honors Akron’s long history as the “Rubber Capital of the World.”
Brandiose Marketing of San Diego, California designed the team logo, colors, and various marks and insignias. Please note that for
print coverage, RubberDucks is spelled as one word with a capital “D.” In broadcast coverage, referring to the team as “the ‘Ducks” is
an acceptable variation of the team’s nickname.
