SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT What chemical dissolves rust the best? Hunter Woodhall | Carleen McNees | Syracuse Jr. high WHAT CHEMICAL WILL DISSOLVE RUST THE BEST? • Out of 6 chemicals which will dissolve rust the best RESEARCH • Research – I researched how to get clean medal rusty in short times – – – – I researched about different chemicals that are not deadly or poisonous Researched how to handle chemicals that could be dangerous Researched what makes rust dissolve or go away Researched how to handle rusty metal not to get hurt or injured • Citations – Wiki, how. PROCEDURE: MATERIALS • • • • • • • • • • • • Materials: Procedures: 1st: use salt and water Metal to make the metal rusty 2nd: Put all Salt The chemicals in aluminum tins 3rd: put Water The metal into the chemicals and let them Coca-cola sit for 24 hours 4th: take out the metal and Naval jelly Record data. Lemon juice Vinegar Nail polish remover Rubbing alcohol Aluminum tins Tongs VARIABLES • Constants: The amount of time the metal was in the chemicals. • Controlled variables: The amount of rust on the metal at the end of the 24 hours. • Independent (manipulated) variable: Which chemicals were used. • Dependent (measured) variable: The amount of rust left on the metal, depending on which chemical was used. DATA/OBSERVATIONS • Chemicals with acid worked best same with the naval jelly. After the 24 hours the rust on the lemon juice and naval jelly was almost all the way gone. CONCLUSION • Chemicals with acid in them work very well along with naval jelly and vinegar. Naval jelly works the best for removing rust, although lemon juice also worked very well. Nail Polish remover worked the worst. My hypothesis was supported.
