About 8 years ago we had the same type of weather through summer, but then we got warm 2010 Club Events weather from October to the beginning of December. If the weather does get hot, we will keep the small pool open after our normal Nov. 1st *NEW CLASS* Yin & Yang Yoga Fridays close date. If the hot weather doesn’t come we will close the small pool st 5 – 6:30pm (begins 09-03-10) November 1 for the Winter. As always, the Big Pool is available yearround (heated to 82 degrees) for your family’s enjoyment. WORKSHOP “Ashtanga style Yoga” As I write this, the Summer Tennis Camps are winding down. 09-18-10 @ 10:15am ($5 deposit) We had great success with our first full-time “Tennis Development Camp Program” which actually taught tennis to every child. Every Fall Kidfit Registration begins 09-07-10 @ child learned to play tennis and progressed every day while having 8am (in person @ front desk) FUN! After the first day, every camper was hitting the ball back over the net. By the last day, they were all able to control the ball, hitting it Stretch class Fridays @ 4:15pm back and forth in a rally. They all played a tournament on the last day CANCELLED against their peers. Now they are all hooked on tennis and posses a love Small Pool Closes - November 1st of the game because they had so much fun. Many campers are planTENNIS MIXERS ning to come to our fall classes to continue the fun and to improve their Fall into Tennis Mixer 9/15/10 6:30-9:00 pm game. This is one way for you to get them away from the refrigerator, Turkey Shoot 11/17/10 6:30-9:00 pm computer, cell phone and TV, and save those things for rainy days. Now you have given them a way to get in shape while having fun outside TENNIS TOURNAMENTS with their friends. Once he gets them on court he will be able to teach them one-on-one in a smaller environment. Tennis will become a priority in Holiday NRTP 12/10/10-12/12/10 &12/18/10their lives. All they will want to do is go, go, go, and play, play, play12/19/10 TENNIS- all the time. They will feel better mentally and physically. They will have more stamina, more energy, and they will do better in class and with homework. Tennis teaches respect, discipline, and dedication, while getting your little ones in great shape. Tennis provides a good cardio activity as well as strengthens and tones your core. Come and try it for yourself! You might see how much FUN they are having and see if the programs will work for you. Our summer programs went so well this year that some of the parents started to stay and watch during the day to see what was going on. Their campers were talking so much at home that they wanted to see with their own eyes. They where surprised when they saw their 5 or 6 yr. old child actually playing tennis so young, so quickly, while getting in shape and having FUN! A few thought the program was more of a summer child care program than a regimented Tennis Development Camp. Our new program is a Child Development Program that teaches tennis and tennis etiquette. This program teaches kids how to show respect for authority and others, develop strong character, to mix and play with other children of all ages and abilities, increase social skills, how to follow rules, how to play and love the game of tennis, and gives them an outlet for all those growing pains. Many parents have never played tennis before, and when they see their children learning to play in such a short time, they ask Bill, our teaching pro, “Can you do that for me?” “Can I learn that fast?” “Can I get in shape and lose some weight and have fun?” The answer is: “Yes, of course!” Many signed up for our adult progressive programs this fall, others signed up their little members for the fall/winter programs (See fliers in this mailing). Everyone learns at their own pace and level, but improvements are visible quickly. Beginners are able to jump in with experienced players in a couple of weeks. You will be taught to strive for improvement and not get hurt. Page 1 Manager’s Corner cont..... on page 4 Tennis News It’s hard to believe that summer is coming to end. Fall season brings a fresh start to many of our lives; children head back to school, and most of us return to our old routines. This fall we encourage you and your family to make Bay-O-Vista tennis programs part of your regular routine. We will do our part to help you become healthier and happier! We have made several changes to our programs: I have moved the Smash and Dash program to Wednesdays from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm and Saturdays from 12:00 pm - 1:30pm. Little Aces and Tennis 101 will remain at the same times. The Tuesday night Adult Beginner/Intermediate Classes have been changed to a 6:30 pm start time instead of a 7:00 pm start time. All of these changes will begin the week of September 5, 2010. Check out all of our tennis programs and upcoming club events on our website! Our programs will help you be able to start playing tennis with your child immediately. You can start getting involved with all the club’s other activities as your skills improve and you gain confidence. You will be able to get involved with all the events and programs we offer, like our Tennis-Social Mixers, USTA Tennis Teams, Tournaments, Classes, Clinics and Private Lessons for adults as well as juniors. You might want to just be able to bang the ball around with friends and others members, just for fun. This enthusiasm has been happening all spring/summer long. Bill’s lessons calendar has been filling up with classes and clinics on a daily basis. With Bill’s “Quick Start” techniques you will learn with a slower ball and smaller court, and quickly gain the confidence to play on a full size court with your friends. Bill has done a great job in gaining the trust of the members one by one. Come and see for yourself. Get involved; start improving your game today! We need more tennis players on court. The Club has started to build up more tennis players from our existing membership through our adult and junior programs. They are all looking for hitting partners to play more here at the Club on a regular basis. Our courts are at championship levels and we will always keep them at that level for you. One of my long term goals has been to increase the number of tennis players from our existing membership, to get the beginners out and playing more often. We need more players in the future to help us to compete in our USTA League Teams, to play in our future inter-club matches, and to play in Club Tournaments. We want all players, from the beginners to the experienced. We will start the beginner’s teams as soon as possible next year, but we need you to start improving now. Sign up for tennis programs or lessons, schedule a court, and check out all of our upcoming tennis events online at BOVSWIM.COM. Make sure to register with the website first. Bill’s tennis department has proven to me that he can help any player learn to improve their game. He can help those that don’t know what to do, where to start, which end of the racquet to hold, etc., as well as the experienced, competitive, even championship quality players. He can help teach anyone how to improve their game, not get hurt, and have FUN playing tennis. Everyone needs a coach. You can practice alone all you want or hit with better players thinking you will improve your game. But if you are doing it wrong or don’t have the correct approach you will not improve your game and you might hurt yourself over time as you get older. Last year, Bill ran the 2009 Stanford Senior Olympics where over 1,000 of the country’s top players ages 65 to 100 years old competed. There were 50 players 85 to 100 years of age that competed for the gold medals in their brackets. Every one of them had coaches and took lessons on a regular basis to build stamina and gain power in their swing. To learn whatever they could to improve mentally and physically. Think about if you are really increasing your level of play or just playing more often? There is a difference. Do you think you are improving but you keep losing? Does your elbow, knee, hand or back hurt? Could you use some help with your form and learning how to play safely? Would you like to keep improving and blow your pals off the court? Contact Bill Conway by phone at the club (510) 357-8366 Ext. #24 (leave a message), by e-mail [email protected] , or just schedule your lesson or clinic yourself by going to the court and lesson scheduler on our website at BOVSWIM.COM. He will return your call as soon is he is off the court. Remember, if you want to test out any of our programs we have some adult group clinic drop-ins, where you can come any time without a long term commitment, and meet other members who are trying to improve their games. You can pay as you go, one clinic at a time if you’d like. You can charge it to your Club account when you sign up. You might meet up with a future hitting partner or find a new best friend. Bring a friend to the Club anytime to play tennis for free once per month, by using your free monthly guest pass. We are looking for some new ways to motivate members to get into a regular exercise program. One of the ideas that we are bouncing around is the “1st Annual Bay-O-Vista Family Fitness Adult Triathlon” in October 2010. We will be using the pool for swimming laps, the spin bikes, and our beautiful Bay-O-Vista neighborhood (or the treadmills) for the run/walk portion. Participants will be separated by age and ability so it is as fair as possible. If it is successful, we will try to have a Junior Triathlon next year. Jodie, our Nutrition Therapist will teach you how to prepare, how to eat, and how to compete if you are interested (classes are not mandatory to attend). That’s all we have for now. We are still working on the program, the dates, and the prizes. We want it to be fun, to stimulate exercising for all ages, to get as many members involved as possible, and to reach out to those who want to learn how to exercise and not get hurt by over doing it. Watch out for the SIGN UP SHEETS IN THE GYM AND THE PAVILION IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. We need to know if anyone is seriously interested and if there are enough to get this going this year. You do not need to be an experienced top shape athlete to do this. Every member could sign up unless your doctor says NO. You will not be pushed to go any farther than you want to go. You are the boss. We are just giving you the avenue to have some fun exercising. Soon we will have a triathlon page on our website (www.BOVSWIM.com) with more information and a link to sign up for this year’s triathlon! Thank You All For Your Patronage. Mark D. Mohr-President & GM Page 4 Two Popular Abdominal Questions Answered! Bob Zunino Bay-O-Vista Personal Trainer www.TrainerBob.com 510.530.3748 Question: Can You Exercise the Upper and Lower Abs Separately? Answer: Although it may feel as though you can “isolate” the upper and lower abs (the rectus abdominis), you actually can’t contract one section independent of the other. Research that looked at the muscle activation while performing a basic crunch exercise found that you may feel more contraction in the upper abdomen because the muscle fibers in the upper part of the rectus abdominis shorten more than in the lower part of the muscle, but the entire muscle is, in fact, activated during the movement. When you perform a reverse crunch (lifting the hips), the opposite happens; you feel more contraction in the lower part of the rectus abdominis even though the muscle fibers in the upper rectus abdominis are also contracting. Additionally, when you stabilize the hips and only lift the torso during the crunch, there is greater muscle involvement in the upper rectus abdominis as well as the internal obliques. When you perform reverse crunches, there is more activation the lower part of the rectus abdominis and more involvement of the external obliques. Question: Can I Lose Belly Fat by Doing Lots of Crunches? Answer: Unfortunately, no. Simply doing lots of crunches won’t reduce belly fat. The belief that you can lose body fat in a specific area by exercising the muscles just beneath that fat is called “spot reduction.” Spot reduction is a myth that has been disproved time and time again. In 1984, researchers at the University of Massachusetts concluded that abdominal exercises do not decrease the amount or size of belly fat. In this study men did the equivalent of 5,000 New!!! Bay-O-Vista sit-ups for 27 days. The researchers measured body fat in the abWater Bottles! domen, buttocks and upper back during the study. If spot reduction worked, the men should have lost fat only in the abdominal area because the buttocks and upper back are not worked during Stainless Steel (Much healthier than Plastic water bottles, sit-ups. However there was no change in the thickness of abdomwhich may cause cancer &breed bacteria) inal fat or waist size. Benefits include increasing strength, stamina and flexibility while boosting energy and reducing stress. Feel free to drop in to this class beginning Friday, September 3rd, all levels are welcome!
